Watched Twiggy on the Breakdown today (yep working from home :)), but he knows what to say, when asked for his opinion about the future comp set up he immediately spoke about building the grassroots, he was a breath of fresh air you could see the panelists just nodding in approval, especially when you think of all the PR bullshit we've been fed, but i'm with you rugbynutter get this guy involved.

So you assume a click bait
so you assume a click bait heading from a journo more reliable than a quote from the CEO? He cites that they have been working on domestic with international crossover, TT and other interactions of new directions. So either the domestic model with international crossover has been shopped to Fox along with the other models and returned a 10 mil commitment or the journo is pulling figures from thin air in which case all the discussion and hypothesis are worthless.

It is a comment specifically on that. She claims a figure and he says he hasn't taken the models to the broadcasters. Have you not seen the hatchet job she has done on the game over the past couple of months? My original comment was using her figures showing something completely different (specifically something more positive).

The headline compares apples to oranges.

You can watch The Breakdown on rugbypass.com (along with The Aussie Rugby Show and The Rugby Ruckus). It has really improved its content this year.

Do we know this to be fact? There was always going to need to be some buy in as they get to join an existing competition for which the other unions had invested in \ built up for years. Maybe the amount was off, but I'm not so sure that it was either.

*snip

Their inability to sign an agreement around the Sunwolves' involvement in the league came down to financial reasons, with reports emerging that the franchise were ordered to pay around US$9 million per season in participation fees, something of which no other club in Super Rugby has to do.

Yes, I read that rugbypass and similar that repeated the same, but I'm unconvinced that it was as simplistic without knowing the specifics. Is it clear what JPRFU ever put into SANZAAR and the Franchise? I'm not sure that it was totally unreasonable.

‘That should answer why we can’t just chuck a team out of Super Rugby. It doesn’t work like that. You have underwritten a certain commercial value. Anything that you deliver, that is not within that commercial value, you as a union stand in for. That is what you sign up for. The JPRFU had every opportunity to sign that agreement, but did not. Based on that, at that moment we had to make a decision.

It's OK everyone, SANZAAR have just released a statement that the SANZAAR joint venture is not being dismantled.

So please desist from such further speculation.

:) SANZAAR exists as long as there is The Rugby Championship. Doesn't mean anything with regards to the future of SuperRugby. Would have loved Japan to be pulled into this years tournament, if anything would prove a great trial for the future.

Heck, it doesn't even sound like Argentina would have a team to field at this rate if SuperRugby could hypothetically return next year and the prep for this years tournament will be pretty poor.

New Zealand being the preferred location for The Rugby Championships is a blow to Australia, but makes sense (damn you Melbourne).

Also Sydney with the Stadium situation. Perth has to feel miffed that they wont get a Bled though.

And I don’t think Sydney is quite out of the woods yet with their COVID situation...

I don't think anyone is TBH. The NSW situation is far from disastrous at present, in fact it seems they've done a good job of containing the SW suburbs outbreak. Only 10 new cases in the state today down from 13 yesterday, and only 3 of those related to that cluster, this is nothing like the Victorian numbers.

Reported on the ABC website, so presumably free from Rupert's dastardly influence.

All Blacks coach Ian Foster has suggested Australia does not deserve equal rights in any potential trans-Tasman rugby union competition, saying there is no room for non-competitive teams.
Ian Foster questioned whether Australia has the player depth and financial strength to field more than two or three teams.

Yeah the more i hear from NZ the more i think we may be better off starting from scratch. The no brainer has always been at 10 team comp. No one wants a 7 or 8 team comp, which i think will ultimately fail regardless. And the hypocrisy of suggesting we arent competitive enough but that there should be a PI team is a quite frustrating.

'We've got to do whatever we can to have strong teams playing our teams' - strong arming us into a position we can't accept sure won't fucken help with that.

They also bang on about how they've been looking after us for years - how is that? can't have been helping us out that much given the shitter we are in now.

That's been the narrative/party line that the NZRU have been running with since the report first leaked so nothing new really.

I find it interesting and a little ironic that every sporting comp around the world has an array of teams of varying depth and strengths which make up the rich tapestry of their respective games. You could make similar arguments that the EPL or Pro14 etc.. should be cut to 8-9 teams because none of the others have a chance of winning anyway. I mean you'd dump the Southern Kings right away and Aston Villa.. pff.. dump them.

It's a shame this years full Super Rugby comp didn't get to playout to really see where the various countries were at. Besides my Tah's who had some lag due to rebuilding/youth I actually though the other 3 teams had a chance to beat anyone on their day.

Ive said this so many times. It doesn't make a lick of sense.

I just feel cutting any of our teams at this stage would be a major set back for the code. To wrap up the Rebels or perform some frankenstien merge with the Brumbies would be untennable... whilst at the same stage being party to starting a fledling PI team as you mentioned.

If we go the path of reducing teams we are forever beholden to NZ because the chances of resurrecting the teams you fold are just not going to happen.. you loose all the work invested in those franchises / states, the culture, community links.. etc...

I really hope the economics work out such that we can go it alone. I think I'd be happy enough to have Twiggy have some investment in the comp if that's what we need. I'm happy enough with 5 teams to start and then having some kind of Champions League after. Drua maybe if WR (World Rugby) / Private Investment is willing to fund them. Play NZ if they want or SA / Arg / Japan.. whoever.

so i have watched and read 844 pages of this without contributing till now. i thought initially that a TT comp would be the best option and would be foistered upon us anyway (still might be), but i am now persuaded that a stand alone Australian comp, will in the longterm be better. some form of "champions" league after may eventuate, top 2 - 3 from Aus/NZ in a round robin or knockout. BUT a domestic comp of the current 5 franchises, and extra team from each of NSW/Qld - call them country (irrespective of where you base them) and play their home games in the provincial cities and add the Drua, 8 teams, home and away, top 4 finals. somehow get some FTA coverage, now no need for the NRC, perhaps a club championship as a second tier, local club comp winners in WA, Vic, and top 2 Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra. Keeps existing tribal rivalries, such as they are. There will almost certainly not be enough money to keep our top players, but i would open selection to all eligible to play for Oz no matter where they ply their trade. none of this is of course an original thought/idea, but its where i've come too after reading and listening to others.

I am concerned we are heading to 4 teams in a trans tasman competition and all of the twiggy interviews and him harping on about how propping up the rebels bankrupt RA etc is that the rebels are on the chopping block...I seriously hope I am wrong and they push for 5 teams with open borders and marquees policy (to plug short term issues around lack of depth)
