Are you suggesting getting rid of some of the limited brand awareness that Rugby has? Or renaming to the 'Sydney Waratahs'?

I'm suggesting that in the Australian context state teams play representative matches. Club-based competitions in Australia use city, town or suburb/s to identify themselves.

Outside the fairly narrow rugby community, NSW teams are usually known as the blues. Except for those of us old enough to remember that we were taught in primary school that the Waratah was the state flower of NSW or those even older who can remember NSW rugby teams from the 1920s, most people living in NSW don't immediately think of their state sporting teams and a Waratah in the same sentence.

The problem is what to do with our provincial teams??

Unless we just have a 5 team comp (+or- a Barbarian team which could play home games in the other states = 6 teams)

ACT becomes Canberra
NSW is split into two with a Sydney and a Western Sydney team
Qld is split into two with a Brisbane and a non Brisbane team
Melbourne is already there
Perth or Western both resonate in the west

That's 7 teams Fiji/Suva are already in NRC, so that's 8. (Playing out of Australia)

Tongan team playing out of Cambelltown, that's 9

Samoan team playing out of Australia, that's 10.

There's an 8, 9 or 10 team competition can be run just with those teams, which are in most cases already established in one form or another.

Wow wow wow wow, all these ideas about a TT, or local domestic competition. New levels, new tiers, new teams, new names.

Why all of a sudden??? Many good ideas that will fail to even get a look in.

Its been obvious to me Super Rugby was flawed concept from the late 90’s, that SA would head north since 2010. You may ask why 2010 for the SA forecast, well in 2010 the FIFA world cup was in SA, The FIFA world cup opened the eyes of the SA government and SA rugby of the political influence and revenue streams in Europe.

Recently well from around late 2016 to mid-2017 I argued to privatise rugby in Australia, based on US franchise models.

The support on this site has gone from luke warm from a few to now almost total acceptance.

My caveat has always been we need 4 to 5 years to make the change.

Obviously, we don’t have 4 to 5 years anymore. Moreover, if we don’t act IMO within months then recovery to say pass levels will be all but impossible.

WE need a total change in structure, that has broad and accepted and respected decision-making processes, Further smart and forward thinking decision making.

To this end we need to change the way in which we both elect the RA board, and secondly change the relationships between major stakeholders.

In previous posts I said how I would do this and I said it was fluid and open for discussion on who gets a vote and the weight of the vote but without a change in governance procedures that govern rugby nothing much will change.

My record speaks for itself and to me changing the governance procedures and who can vote in a new board is the most obvious of all things I have ever said about rugby.

Sanzaar pouring cold water on long term changes to super rugby and 14 team format with South Africa is what all committed to for next decade.

Here is the thing - do they really think there will be many rugby fans left watching super rugby in a decade....

How much more additional evidence and data beyond from last 5 years do they need to realise people don’t want this BS super rugby model playing SA teams in SA at 1am to 2am in the morning - or only having opportunities to attend 6/7 home games.

Super Rugby has gone past its use by date and not kept up with and evolved to what fans have equally evolved to wanting in a highly competitive sports market.

I think we need private equity types to buy out sanzaar so can have a hope of creating a commercial rugby model fans want - but then again sanzaar has so diluted the value of its professional rugby product it is probably lost the ability to have much commercial interest in it.

If we don’t use covid 19 situation and changes required short term to trial new concepts (domestic plus trans Tasman concepts) as something as a basis for ideas for a longer term model for pro rugby whether domestically or wider Asia pacific we may as well run up the white flag and just close down pro rugby rather than continue to watch the current train wreck that is super rugby continue to unfold before us.

Marinos is based in Sydney, that surely makes it about the most tone deaf statement you could make.

Yeah, but would European rugby be prepared to accommodate the Saffers. A lot of rejigging and travel required.

The 6 teams South Africa run now are essentially inventions for Super Rugby like the Kiwi ones. Cut the number of teams and use it as a top division for Currie Cup.

I think having 4 Saffer franchises in a Euro comp would work, if they don't give a shit about borders. Players would go both directions.

.

Mate..... this isnt a new suggestion, there were talks of the Reds been privatised back in 2009 when the QRU were bailed out by RA, and the Rebels have been through the hands of Andrew Cox, Harold Mitchell, VRU and RA in the past 10 years, resulting in multi $million losses for parties along the way.

It’s one thing to suggest a ‘good idea’, its another thing to find a practical means of implementation or an appetite for what is been suggested.

I'm of the opinion that PE has to be tied into the league structure. Be it the league itself or via a single entity set up with PE buying licences to operate teams in the league in exchange for an overall ownership stake in the league.

The only way forward for the game here is with an injection of private money, the issue has always been governance. You can't have it both ways. Look at the Rebels, privately owned until the franchise were gifted back to the rugby community (short for this is a dud deal).

The powers to be cannot expect private money, and then hand those investors a list of terms & conditions.

Legitimate question- how many entire rugby matches do you think Twiggy has watched in his life?

Id say irrelevant question.

If there is a Billionaire wanting to pour millions into rugby, please dont do way Clyne did and stand in his way.

How many games of rugby they have watched is not that important.

But I understand he did play the game at school and seems to have more than a passing interest in the Force

If things went towards privatization then the league must be independent. One of the frustrations with the Rebels ownership was the lack of say they had in the competition, the team etc. I understand this is a similar issue with some of the kiwi franchises which are partially privately owned. If it goes private RA and the state unions will have to completely give up any say they have in it. Both models have their positives and negatives.

If the entire league went private I can almost guarantee we would see a 20week domestic season, it is the biggest annoyance for existing private investors, the limited amount of content they have to generate revenue. It would also kill off any semi-pro competition below Super Rugby or whatever would replace it (domestic, TransTasman, etc.). These are the things that would need to be weighed up.

Agreed, they invest, they then get to decide what happens. The EPL, NFL, NBA etc. are all separate entities from the actual national sporting entity, where the teams (therefore owners) are the only voting members on what the league looks like and the structures around it. The English Premiership rugby is this mode as well, the RFU only has control over the leagues below the Premiership and actually pays the Premiership money for the right to use players involved in it during international windows. The Premier League is the same

Adam true but that was for the odd team, my suggestions have been for a fully privately run competition based on US franchise models... using IMO the best model ie the MLS model.

Piftzy, today it is beyond difficult, but 3 to 4 years ago it was light years more easy and we had a Super Rugby competition with funding to prepare for a new competition.

Don't get me wrong, I'll still be reading it … well, skimming over it, anyway.

There might be a diamond sitting in the bottom of the trough.

Well a lot of rugby fans (what’s left of them) are pretty pissed about the stage of affairs...
