What's the sound of rugby

Alright, theres not much going on here during this sort of no mans land of rugby in australia, so i thought i'd pose a question on Rugby copying the AFL in some way, and what the Twickenham Stadium hooter might sound like.

So What is the sound of rugby? the AFL has their sound trademarked and all our games are getting flooded with their buzzer due to the neccessity for every stadium to hold that sound. We know that in soccer, they don't actually like to have a buzzer just at half time and full time, they let the crowd continuously play the buzzer throughout the game, and even possibly after, in fact, if soccer had its way, i think that we would continuously hear the buzzing of vuvuzelas.

So why can't rugby have a sound, for the big matches, one that the IRB owns and is used universally (where it can be) to symbolise rugby partially. It might not make sense to you, but you know that everytime you hear that orgasm of horns you think AFL.

Personally, i think we should look at the rugby stadiums of the world, particularly at Twickenham, since it is sortof the home of rugby in england, or Cardiff maybe, but i havent heard their sounds, anyone have soundclips or youtube clips with them in it?

I think calling it an orgasm would be a massive stretch. Its like comparing Tom Carter to John Eales. But I agree on the concept of a universal recognisable sound of rugby.

Its a Newlands chanting from the south pavillion, our tradition coloured people love that standing area right next to the playing area.

WPRU use this chant now official, see at the top of their site

A bit from Cravens articles I post the other day:

Rugby365
When, in the presidency of Jan Pickard, Newlands was changed and the South Stand was rebuilt and became grand, the name was changed to the Danie Craven Stadium. Then, for the first time Craven was given and wore a Western Province blazer.

In Doc's day the South Stand was known as the Malay Stand. In those times of segregation it was where 'nonwhites' were allowed and it was especially members of the Muslim community which sat there, on big days wearing their grey suits and red fezzes. (The Muslim community at the Cape were referred to as the Malays or Cape Malays, though most were not descended from people from Malaysia at all.) They were always regarded as knowledgeable and one of their community, at tailor from Somerset West Gesant Ederoos Behardien, known as Gamat, was important as the baggage man - ballboy, he called himself - looking after the togs for Western Province and the Springboks for over 40 years. There were people who believed that the 1949 All Blacks were whitewashed because Gamat Malay-tricked them.

The coming of the Group Areas Act and the destruction of communities such as District Six, Claremont, Harfield Village and Newlands changed a lot of that.

Its the pavillion on Newlands cricket field on the far side

The unique sound of Rugby has to be the way the referee blows the Acme Thunderer for Full Time.

The typical way most referees use the Thunderer to signify the end of the game is different from any other sport.

Blue's almost got it; I reckon the sound is the noise made when the scrum engages. No other sport has it (although there are some similar sounds). It's a sort of collective groan.

I like the Konzes idea and would suggest to take it further to be a montage of short sound bites of:
Scrum engagement
Referee whistles
Haka
Cardiff Arms Singing
Swing Low Sweet Chariot
Referee calls "roll away" "release Black"
Flower of Scotland
Bill MacLaren commentary snippets

I'm all there as long as we get rid of 'swing low' and replace it with la marseilles or Ireland's Call.

I think the haka/anthems are a bigger part of rugby than any other sport.
As for a specific sound, the roar/grunt/heave of the crum engagement has to be it

Well before the Poms hijacked Swing Low, I can fondly remember many chemically enhanced after match functions where Swing Low was sung with great gusto, complete with all relevant actions - Ladies only.

Following the Pom's theft, I cringe to think that we have allowed then to adopt it as their own.

To me it represents all the best of the grass roots post game clubhouse antics, and it should have stayed there.

Awesome Konze. That brings back very fond memories of the greatest sports commentator of all time. Only rivaled by Murray Walker.

In the SH we may play the game played in Heaven much better than the NH mob, but our callers have never been able to match Bill.
