I played all of my rugby at loose head in the Illawarra. I usually had to concede weight but as I was almost the only one around doing weight lifting I could always hold my own. This led to a continuing fascination with the biomechanics and dynamics of scrummaging.

I am a firm believer that the main reason for playing rugby is that it gives you the chance to get involved in scrums.

Bruce, do you mind if I borrow this quote? It's classic.

Openside since the U13s

Was interesting that when I came to pommy land in the early 90's, they still didn't have the fetcher concept. Probably part of the reason I got voted 1992's 'dirtiest player' for University College London.

Reading the above reminds me how much I love that prop and 8 are so interchangeable! Many a mate who did the same thing.

Started off as a 9 for my schools B team in under 8, was an academy standard soccer player until i was about 13 so didn't really like rugby that much.

At secondary school got transferred to full back for 3 years until i was 14. Then due to my school having an appalling 10 i moved there. Best move ever love 10, i am now an academy player for London Irish but i am likely to be cut in the next year or two.

Will probably come over to oz for my gap year and play league or union in Sydney for a year whilst working here. can anyone tell me what standard the clubs are in sydney and if they have different grades of competition.

You don't want to play league (in obi wan kenobi voice, waves hand and uses jedi mind tricks...) You should play for parramatta, you'd get a go there coz they're short on first graders and they need players, though its somewhat out of the sydney CBD

scrumhalf/halfback mainly but sometimes flyhalf from under 6's and still playing both league and union today at 33. Coach also.

Shot up in year 5 and I've played second row ever since. 19 now and a lanky 6'4" at 90kg, getting by mainly on fitness and being pretty light in lineouts - don't really have the bulk to play tight though, so I'm considering converting to the backs next season. Thoughts?

Backrow from the start till U13's when I thought wing looked like fun. Played every backline position apart from halfback at school in the lower teams then in grade 12 moved back to the backrow and progressed up the ranks and played 1st XV at second row. In colts I played mostly second row and had a season in Ireland where I worked out that blindside was my natural home. In grades I played between the second row and backrow. Managed to play Premier on the wing once when we were short and went we until 10mins to go in the game and the other team realised their winger could just run around me if he had space (he scored 3 tries in quick succession and we lost). My last 3 years of grade rugby I played at 6 the whole time and they were the most enjoyable years I played. Won a premiership and lost 2 GF's.
I now coach and have realised I am of much more benefit off the field than on it.

Played a lot of rugby at 10 or 12 but utility back would be a more apt description of my playing history. I'm the type of player who would play any position if it meant getting a game (especially in 1st grade).

Played all my schoolboy footy at lock. When I left I went down to Sydney Uni Colts training and was hanging around the first week or so when Declan Curran wanders over. He was playing 3rd grade at Uni that year (interestingly JON was capt coach and playing 5/8) as he had just had a knee recon which was a fairly new procedure in 1979. Anyway Dec says to me "Hey, Joeys socks, come over here". Well, you don't argue with Dec so over I go. "You can play loose head in 3rds with me at tight head". I tried to explain that I had never played prop in my life. Dec says "your brother's a prop isn't he?", "Yes" I say (or maybe "yes sir" he was big mean bastard), " You can play prop then". And that was it, prop for the rest of my playing life. Mostly lower grades at Uni, then subbies for a while, then country rugby at the end. Then for some weird reason I started playing AFL at the age of 35 and played until I was 40. There must have been beer involved.
My son started playing when he was 8yo and was always a big unit so got put in the front row. He always had dreams of being a no 8 but I had to explain to him that no one ever moves from front row. Once you are there it's a commitment for life. He's going alright though, and I spend most of my winter weekends travelling about 900kms in a round trip to watch him play.

I have a theory that Props think more about the game than people who played any other position. The posts here are proving this theory correct.

Hit the weights and bulk up.

Two years of proper weight training and I've gained all of 10kg. Not a heavy, it seems.

My mate runs a bodybuilding shop. With the right training and diet you can put on a lot more size. Its very hard though you have to basically eat constantly, every 2 hours a full healthy meal. With the right routines and diet for your body type you could aim to gain 10Kg in 8 months legally. Id say your not training right (could be over training on the weights) and not eating enough.

Only started playing Rugby at 20.

Best at 15.
Ended at 12.
Fun but NFI at 10.
Winning try in my only game at 9.
11 & 14 covered nicely.
13 a lot... and from where I scored the majority of tries.

A few games at scrum stabiliser ( flanker).

A far as I could tell, the poll only allowed for 5 options. I was thinking of making the choices:

1. LHP
2. Hooker
3. THP
4. Other forward
5. Other

but decided to go with something more conventional.

I have to agree with Topo on the front row being for life - I started as a prop and (the occassional foray into the back row aside) I pretty much went with it, although I can't call putting on weight "adding weight to the pack" anymore as (delusions of a potential comeback aside) my playing days are over.

Didn't play till I was 15 and did the private school move. Started off at 8, and also played some 6 and in the second row. Played 12 in final year but back to the backrow in colts and have started playing backrow again after a six year absence.
