Re: Comings and goings at the Force

Yeah he is a bit taller than his old man now so wouldn't expect him to get much taller. Very athletic though.

Dunning appears to have lost approximately 72kg, Mitchell dreamprop?

Re: Comings and goings at the Force

Geez he looked a lot bigger than that playing at Rat Park a few weeks ago, but he did look fit.

Funny - he said about 18 months ago that he deliberately put on weight because he found that playing trim reduced his strength.

ELVs??

Re: Comings and goings at the Force

He's turned into the mobile prop who's useless in scrums that Mitchell seems to favour.

Standing side on too, just to show the lack of man-boobs / beer-gut

Re: Comings and goings at the Force

as a bigger man, i would say the 45% untucked larger shirt pose is great for weight reducing photos!
he makes sheehan look like he could pack down sometime soon!

I can't find the Force 2010 topic (and I did use the search feature), so I decided to start one. Sorry if it already exists.

Let's start with their recruitment and playing roster. I actually think that the Force have recruited quite well - once again, the worst recruiting team has been the Reds. New recruits are bolded. There are 32 all up listed below.

Fatties

Props:
Pek Cowan (LH) - may cross train as hooker or TH
Matt Dunning (LH/TH) - may cross train as hooker, can play both sides, good recruit
Tim Fairbrother (LH/TH) - can play both sides?, good recruit
Nic Henderson (LH) - interesting recruit, could be good
Kieran Longbottom (LH?) - born and bred in WA

Almost an entire clean out of the propping stocks, and it looks to be a big improvement.

Hookers:
Ben Whittaker
Ryan Tyrrell - Academy, another born and bred in WA

The Force have lost journeyman hookers McIsaac and Holmes. Likely that the Force will Cowan or Dunning as maybe their first choice hooker? Whittaker is still a bit young and raw. Otherwise, this is the weakest position at the Force.

2nd rows:
Tom Hockings
Nathan Sharpe
Richard Stanford - more of a blindside?
Sam Wykes - more of a blindside?

Not much depth here.

Flankers:
Richard Brown (no. 8)
Matt Hodgson (openside/blindside)
David Pocock (openside)
Filipe Manu (blindside) - Academy
Ben McCalman (blindside / no. 8) - Rookie? Is he from Sydney Uni? Anyone rate him?

Backs

Halfback:
Chris O’Young
Brett Sheehan
Mark Swanepoel - Rookie, and is not Academy apparently
Justin Turner - Academy

Flyhalf:
Andre Pretorius - really interested to see how he will go, needs to stay injury free
Sam Harris - probably will be back up 5/8 with utility Bartholomeusz?

If Pretorius fails to fire or gets injured, the Force could in big trouble. Almost as thin here as hooker - worrying for the Force, as 2 and 10 are both very important positions.

Inside centre:
James O’Connor - will they consider him at fullback? Surely he is more valuable at 12 to the Force?
Josh Tatupu

Outside centre:
Ryan Cross
Mitchell Inman - Rookie?

Wings:
Nick Cummins
Stefano Hunt - Rookie, and is not Academy apparently
Haig Sare - can play 13

Fullback:
Dane Haylett-Petty
Cameron Shepherd

Utility:
Mark Bartholomeusz - will be expected to cover from 10 through 15? A good recruit, I think.

interested to see how Sheehan goes west. really love him at club level and hopefully a clean break and new coach will help him step up.
Henderson is a great signing. Brumbies just had too many.
Mark Bartholomeusz is interesting. Will offer lots of experience wise but might a bit over the hill.
Andre Pretorius could be wonderful

Page 1 of the old Force thread is here - maybe somebody can merge them.

Haven't checked your list Ash with any forensic endeavour, but the front row definitely looks like the most improved unit. Sure, they have lost McIsaac but young Whitaker looked good in the stints he had in 2009. I hope that Mitchell keeps training Cowan as a hooker as his good mate, the Dingo, is doing with the Wallabies.

I don't think that Dunning will be cross-trained as a 2. Perhaps you were thinking about his playing hooker for Eastwood a few weeks back- but young Damien Fitzpatrick, a Yr.11 backrower for the Joeys Twos before he changed to hooker in Yr. 12, was on the flank for Eastwood and threw the ball into the lineout.

The 2nd row is weak as you have indicated but the excellent (at S14 level) back row is almost intact. Geez Horua played well in some games this year and would have been handy again.

Half back depth has not been affected too much with Sheehan going over there to replace Valentine. Turner and Swanepoel are not long out of school and will be good for the future if they can be retained and not go to Melbourne. [How ironic it will be if The Force bemoan the loss of players to the new franchise.]

Flyhalf depth will be a big problem as one can almost guarantee that Pretorius will miss a chunk of games. Harris played a couple of good matches as 10 for the Rats this year, but Mitchell will have been appalled with some of the match DVDs he got from Warringah - and especially watching the problematic combination between Sheehan and Harris.

The retention of the Rabbit, who will be available to play 12, will be priceless for the Force, because it will avoid a host of problems elsewhere. If Pretorius can play a whole season, if Shepherd can start healthy and stay healthy, (neither of which should be assumed) then the effect of the loss of Giteau and Mitchell will be minimised.

If ever JOC (James O'Connor) is forced to play 10 it will be a problem. As a schoolboy he played there like an outside back wearing a 10 jersey, which is fine in school games but not in pro rugby. In addition his play elsewhere will be sorely missed and the rejigging of the backline to account for his absence from where he should be will counter any good effect he has at 10.

The Force should seek to hire To'omua for 2011 as I think Lealiifano would want to stay in Canberra.

As for some other remarks:

- Stanford and Wykes at the S14 level are really 6s who can play in the 2nd row if the really have to. Stanford will have to step up whenever he gets a chance to play as he doesn't have a physical presence, and Wykes is still as skinny as he was at school though skilful.

- McCalman is terrific at club level but his play in pro rugby will not compare for a while to Horua's seasoned efforts. His size as an S14 no.8 (he would be too short to play in the 2nd row in the S14) is not impressive and he will have to play a heavy game to make up for it.

never heard of this lad, anyone know anything?

Joel Rapana has turned from a mission for God to being on a mission to scoring tries for the Emirates Western Force in the 2010 Super 14 season.

After moving from New Zealand to Queensland, Rapana was a hot rugby league property during his junior career, but went into the family business instead of playing in the National Rugby League straight out of school.

That family business brought the devout Mormon to the regional communities of Western Australia where he worked to serve the mission for his church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Rapana is one of 10 siblings, and their father Eli is the bishop at the Tweed Heads church.

He would have had it no other way either despite giving up some big NRL offers, but he did return to league ranks in 2007 when he joined the Gold Coast Titans for two seasons. He has now decided to return to rugby union and to Western Australia, and is excited about being at the Force.

"It's been a good opportunity to come back and touch base with a few people I had spent time with while I was here on my missionary service, and it's been good to come back," Rapana said.

"At this time in my life I'm looking at it with a new uniform, something with a different colour and that can give me opportunities to help me out with the future that I intend on having."

Rapana has no doubt he will be able to quickly adjust back to rugby union now that he's with the Force and taking part in pre-season training. He is looking forward to stepping into a role on the wing next year and scoring plenty of tries for the boys in blue.

"In converting back to it now the kicking side of things is what you have to focus on. We don’t do a lot of kicking in rugby league, especially in the outside backs, so I will take on board Mitch's ideas of working hard and maintaining those technical areas that I'll need in my game," he said.

"If I just put my head down, work hard and show that I'm here for the whole time and I want to work to prove that I can start on the wing and play outside Ryan Cross, then that's what any coach is looking for from my experiences. That's all I can do.

"I consider myself to be a finisher. I'm not one of the pigs who sits inside and does a lot of the dirty work, but I like to finish, score tries and play out wide to run in the open field."

Rapana is proud of the decision he made to serve his church and has no doubt it has helped him to develop into the man he is now who is ready and willing to become a Super 14 force.

"At the time it wasn’t a difficult decision because I grew up with the intention and desire to serve the mission for our church. It was something my older brothers did and my father and uncles did, so it's part of our lifestyle and something we do as we grow up," he said.

"Rugby league or union was just another thing that we did on the side of our church. I'm grateful I got the chance to go out and do it when I did. The experience I had there taught me to grow up.

"I didn’t have my mum to do my washing and things like that, so it was a tough curve ball that I had to take in my life and grow up with. I can look back on it now that I'm over here in the west and I don’t get homesick anymore, which is a good thing."

Never heard of the young bloke but I wish him well; our sport can do with some upright young blokes. In my young days I roomed with a Mormon at a ski resort for the season. Great bloke: didn't drink or curse; didn't smoke either - but he sure liked the ladies - and vice versa.

Rapana was very fortunate doing his mission in Oz as the LDS are likely to send them anywhere. The son of a friend of mine has just gone on his mission to Taiwan - and doesn't speak the lingo.

My friend said these missions make real men of boys. The Force could use a few more real men.

that joel rapana bloke played first grade at the titans and did some freakish stuff. has a set of jet shoes, and is a good finisher. good pickup.

as for the rest of the list, you blokes are desperately thin on hookers and they must be looking at pek seriously.

also what ever happened to pat o'connor, he was one of the up and coming locks in oz? is he even contracted anymore.

also to my knowledge stefano hunt from qld is a flyhalf not a wing but is still very raw.

JOC (James O'Connor) has be 12. fullstop.

pocock = god.

makings of a very good side.

The Force may have the makings of a good side but I reckon they're poorly balanced. Not having a good hooker, or two, will bite them on the arse. As will the lack of talent in the second row. I can see other Super sides challenging them, and hammering them, in scrums and lineouts.

But I might be wrong.

Remember watching Rapana make his debut for the Titans as an 18 year old and he was very exciting. Definitely has jet shoes.

Hunt is a 10 or 12 who showed massive promise as a youngster. Kind of disappointed in his senior years but hope he has rediscovered the talent that had everyone so enthused about him.

Agree - JOC (James O'Connor) is a 12.

Cowan - should train as a hooker because they desperately need one with experience and he can get around the park
Dunning - smartest thing the Force have done in years
Fairbrother - a good prop but didn't really get much chance to show his best
Henderson - Hope he's worked on his tight game
Longbottom - can't comment on him

Ultimately, they have the props to do the job. As far as their scrum goes - its all a question of whether Nathan Sharpe has learned to push.

I'd play the forward pack of:

1 Dunning
2 Cowan
3 Fairbrother
4 Sharpe
5 Hockings
6 Stanford
7 Pocock
8 Brown

Bench forwards are Henderson, one of the other hookers, Wykes, and Hodgson. That's a fairly handy pack. Good height from 4-6, solid front row, and quick back row.

that really isn't the worse pack you'll see in the super comp.
Pocock will bring a lot back from this tour. having finally steeping up into his potential he's been carrying around for two years. he could really lead this time into a new era.
am very interested to see how dick brown returns after having a shocking tri nations and no real game time that he got last year. might be good for him.

A question for the Force fans - what's the feeling towards John Mitchell over there? This will be his fifth season in charge and they have yet to make the S14 finals despite spending a lot of money (through 3rd party sponsors) on players, the forwards are weak despite his background as a Waikato no8 and English forwards coach. Will he be there post 2010?
