Wellington's got it for two more years & as mentioned earlier in the thread, when the rights were tendered last year only Welligton put in a bid.

So maybe it's time to think a little further afield than the obvious (Dunners, D'Auckland) & even the less obvious (Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier) & just drop NZ from the circuit for 3-4 years. THAT might inspire NZRU to take on the minimum 1/3 risk share that IMO they need to in order to get local/ regional councils & businesses to cover the other 2/3.

Why?

World Rugby clearly shown that tradition means Sweet Fanny Adams, in dropping Scotland Sevens for Paris.

Some people were complaining about the congestion (Wellington/Sydney Sevens/Auckland 9s/Brisbane 10s) and you could look to maybe partner up Sydney with HK instead, let Singapore and Tokyo both host together or have a new place.

Probably a few Scots thought the same, what with them having invented the game :). EDIT: as H35 says above, tradition counts for nowt, it's a business these days & if you're seen to not be pulling your weight, you get cut.

It reportedly lost $300K last year of which Wellington City Council's share was around half. Hence they've pretty much pulled out this year other than promoting it. No one else wants it, crowds are abysmal so why not just pull the plug on it? Or, give NZRU notice that you're gunna pull the plug & see what they do.

The only viable route to keep it in NZ is to push it back a month, send it to Dunedin and start a fund to send all the local fuzz and native old people to Wellington for the weekend to file paper. Do that and it'd be back to projectile vomiting, burning couches and death by snu-snu in no time at all.

Any other option -- including the status quo -- will inevitably be doomed by busy-bodying.

Ringinland scored with 0:02 on the clock & chose not to attempt a conversion on account of it being so windy & the kick being ~5m from touch. Restart didn't go 10m & dribbled into touch. Right idea, wrong execution.

Molina makes a great run, plenty of guys outside him but some muppet decides to cut infield instead of drawing & passing. Gets tackled, holds on, gets penalised, try butchered & you don't get so many chances against Fiji that you can afford not to take them all.

Inevitably, Fiji score, 7-0.

NZ butcher a 3-on-1 then concede the first try. Fairly symptomatic of their performances over the last few years.

EDIT: And again. NZ makes a break, screw it up and Fiji score.

Yep, Veremalua finishes off Tuwai's break, 26-5.

As TJ noted in commentary, everyone raves about Fiji's attack (as they should) but their D wins them plenty of games, too.

Mikkelson gets a consolation try in OT, Fiji 26-10 NZ.

Argentina awarded a penalty with 0:03 left & retained possession until 1:23 of OT before knocking it on at about halfway. Great effort Canada.
