HOOKER Adam Freier is poised to be a shock starter for the Waratahs in tomorrow's Super 14 showdown with the Brumbies at ANZ Stadium after playing just 60 minutes of rugby this year.
With continuing doubts over whether Tatafu Polota-Nau will have recovered from a dislocated shoulder in time for the crucial local derby, the indications are that Freier will be catapulted in as his replacement despite his limited preparation.
In what has been a disrupted preparation for NSW, Polota-Nau wore a brace and only ran with the squad for about 25 minutes yesterday.
Prop Benn Robinson, who has small fractures in his arm, did sprints up and down the sideline and his chances of playing appear to be lengthening. On top of that centre Rob Horne did not train yesterday and while Hickey said he will be OK, the Brumbies camp has doubts he will play.
It had been assumed that Damien Fitzpatrick would move straight into the front-row with Freier called up onto the bench if Polota-Nau is ruled out.
But in what would be a bold selection move, Waratahs coach Chris Hickey appears set to throw the experienced Freier into the cauldron for what promises to be a torrid opening exchange between the arch-rivals.
It was significant that during training at Moore Park yesterday - the second-last hit-out before the game - former Wallaby Freier spent most of the session with the top team during the opposed run and in scrummaging. Freier had the majority of time packing down with props Al Baxter and Sekope Kepu- who will start the game if Robinson doesn't play.
Hickey added intrigue to the situation when asked who would wear the No. 2 jumper tomorrow night.
"If for any reason Tatafu cannot play at all, we have full confidence that both Adam and Damien can do the job," Hickey said.
Freier made his comeback after undergoing back surgery by playing for a hour in Randwick's 41-5 win over Penrith last Saturday.
He threw himself into all the work yesterday and said afterwards he felt terrific and ready to go if needed.
Hickey said Wallabies forwards Robinson and Polota-Nau will be given every opportunity to play and their fitness will be reassessed today. "The fact they are here at training is the strongest indication of where they are at," he said.
Hickey said a win for the Waratahs would put them in with the chance of playing for a home semi in their final three games while also making things difficult for the Brumbies.
"There is no doubt from their point of view it makes it a pretty hard road for them if they were to lose this game and they would be relying on results rather than being in control of their own destiny," Hickey said.
The Waratahs found themselves facing that same scenario in 2009.
"It's not a good position to be in. We understand it is a big game for them and we expect them to play accordingly."
