I understand the support for Harrison and Donaldson as both are promising young players who have come up through the U20s. Hansen did exactly the same but is a little older and more experienced. I just have a thought that the Tahs and to some extent the Reds are very insular in their view of the world. If someone of promise comes through one of the lesser franchises, they seem to be ignored by the two biggest who have a preference for picking from their own State club competition. I know there are exceptions, eg Tizzano, but they seem to be few and far between.

A bit more interest from the two bigger sides and we might just keep a few more of our up and coming talent at home.
We don't pick players from club rugby at all... Because they suck.

The Reds have a KPI of signing at least 80% locally developed talent , not sure if the Tahs have something similar?

Brad Thorn is big on the idea of the Reds representing all of Qld , rather than just being a franchise based in Brisbane. Home grown talent is a big part of this and I for one like the sense of tribalism that this invokes.

Still leaves a few spots for ring ins . I’m sure the Reds would have taken Tom Banks back ……..

It’s a shame Hansen went OS, but do we know the Tahs didn’t speak to him? I’d be surprised if that isn’t the case and I thought Coleman has already come out and said they’d spoken to players far and wide to fill spaces but were having trouble winning signatures.

It might be the case they weren’t interested, but I’d be surprised.

The Reds have Petaia, Daugunu, Vunivalu & Campbell backed up by Grealy, Droasese & Aubrey plus Flook can play on the wing. I understand why Hansen wouldn’t have been a priority signing for them.

Just because has some less successful nz players does not mean should not keep looking. Brumbies had more success bringing in kiwi players.

Players are going to leave, just like people leave jobs.

We only have five teams, he did not get an offer from one of the Super Rugby sides, OR he decided to go OS.

If he wasn't good enough, didn't take his chances, the coach did not like him, wasn't ready, or did not get a fair go is irrelevant now. Hansen is gone and in the Ireland squad.

Personally, I would never dream of wearing any other colours than the Australian jersey, but good luck to him, and I hope he has a great career.

I am much more concerned about the guys HERE representing our teams and fighting for that gold jersey than everybody else Meh!

On the best team, is it right that Hanigan doesn't return until mid season?
If that's the case:
1. Bell 2. Porecki 3. Smith 4. Douglas 5. Holloway 6. Swinton 7. Hooper 8. Warren-Voyasaco 9. Gordon (c) 10. Harrison 11. Ramm 12. Foketi 13. Perese 14. Peitch 15. Donaldson
Res: Horton, HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes), Faulkner, Sinclair,

I heard that Donaldson was approached by the Brumbies with their exodus of back up 10’s but knocked them back to stay in Sydney.

My money is on Coleman bringing the best out of all the players on his roster.
To hear him being sledged for
a) relying on Shute Shield players, and also
b) bringing in players from o/s
tells me he is doing something right.
Go Tahs!

really? You think that’s a sign of him doing the right thing? And which Shute shield players is he relying on?

SMH reporting that former Wale and BIL centre, Jamie Roberts is joining Tahs to cover Joey Walton who is out with a season-ending knee injury.
That’s an excellent addition. If for nothing else his experience and mentorship to the very green group of backs

It was the sledging here that I focussed on, not Coleman's actual deep dive into SS playing ranks.
I think he's the right man for the job and wherever he gets talent from is up to his professionalism and ability to recruit good players.
Personally I'd like to see SS deliver 2-3 standouts to NSW per season.

Tahs are making a lot of signings pretty late in pre-season, understand Jamie is injury cover, but they've added 3 other players since Christmas also

How are the Reds and Waratahs being blamed for a young Brumby player going overseas? Talk about spin.
Agreed. Its a bit fanciful and rather presumptuous. With an international opportunity a possibly reality its a ridiculous suggestion. Better money and a longer season to market himself and get game time;, why would he even contemplate entertaining the thought of an offer that reduces his prospects, let alone to a lower standard Tah's who are in the 22nd edition of a "rebuilding phase".

Wow. Has he been playing recently??
From a BBC news article:

Roberts, 35, is set to cancel his contract with the Dragons.

His final appearance could be against Benetton in the United Rugby Championship on 28 January at Rodney Parade. Roberts, who has an Australian partner, signed for the Dragons in August 2020 and has played 23 times for the Gwent region with five wins and 18 defeats.

Dragons have lost nine out of 10 competitive games this season under Dean Ryan.

Roberts returned to Welsh domestic rugby after a seven-year absence when he joined the Dragons after a short stint with the Stormers in South Africa.
