Waratahs 2020

I wouldn’t be surprised if Crichton comes back after his Chooks’ contract expires to take a stab at the 2023 WC. Although, he wasn’t nearly as good last year as he was in 2018 and query whether he would be able to break into the Wallaby backrow with some of the talent coming through. Still would probably be an improvement on the Tahs this year though.

If I remember correctly, his contract expires at the end of 2021 season for roosters? I guess it is a possibility. Don't watch league very closely these days but he did seem a talent from what I saw of him in the past.

If he came back he would most likely play 12 unfortunately.

What would be the issue with 12? too many other incumbents and potentials in the way?

More the fact that we need abrasive backrowers like Crichton or Frizell to play there, but after missing so much technical rugby development in league, they almost always come back - as backs.

Farrell, SBW, Burgess etc.

The knock on Crichton is that while he has a decent running game, with footwork, he's not as electrifying as some (Cameron Murray), doesn't have the ball skills of others (Trbojevic) nor the versatility and work rate of a Boyd Cordner.

Personally, I don't think he's got the size to be Union backrower.

So, stoning it is then....

Or play 12. Sounds perfect for it.

Moeroa is a similar story. He was (as many a G&GR poster will attest) an absolute marvel playing for Newington. Metaphorically-speaking, I had his poster up on my bedroom wall.

League has knocked him about, tried to turn him into a bash-and-barge merchant. However, you'd have to respect him for honouring his implicit obligation to the Eels for paying his tuition, and trying to do the right thing by everyone.

His (publicly stated) wishes were to represent Australia in League, Union and Athletics. Given the first one is never going to happen, it's no surprise he feels it wise to move onto Item 2.

Crichton, for mine, is in the same boat. After a breakout year to start with, his near $1m price tag is starting to look a bit exxy.

No doubt the Roosters will agonise over whether to release their ridgey-didge, Scots-College-well-it's-nearby-innit, 'local junior' though...

The other thing is that there’s not as much need in League for height so you get a lot more Ardie Savea sized players (183-188cm) who are extremely abrasive in contact but might not be tall enough for 6 or 8 in Union.

That probably speaks more to why they recruit them in the first place. Incredible contact players who might be too short to play back row by conventional wisdom.

But for mine, Sean McMahon shows that the best athletes just outperform others - even if dimensions don’t pass the KPMG requirements of a rugby team.

I feel sorry for Penney. He has inherited this team from the most incompetent clipboard holder in Gibson and his mate Hoare. Poor recruitment, no plans for the future when senior players were moving on, not recruiting where the team needed strengthening, the endless pointless belief in the light and mobile pack.

The problem is many of the senior players are not standing up. They are playing rubbish. They are not helping the kids and are not playing anywhere near top level union. They seem to know that due to the lack of decent depth they won't be dropped so don't seem to care.

Penney made it clear that the recruitment targets should have been a dominant THP, powerhouse lock or no.8 and a powerhouse outside back.

Unfortunately they got 0/3 and it's obvious. What they would give for Kepu/Skelton/Naiyaravoro !

If we had the rebels 8 last night the game would’ve been different. Not saying the Tahs win, but his running game provided such a good platform for the later phases. Having an ineffective second row doesn’t help. If you can’t; bend the line, get the scrums going forward or win your own lineout ball what are you there for? Really feel for HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes), had somewhat of a breakout season last year at LHP, gets shunted to THP. I know someone had to fill the role, just seems harsh on the young bloke.

Also agree moreroa, just play him. We need to straighten our attack and get over the gain line before starting with offloads and pop passes. In our squad he seems the only player who has that capability at the moment.

The appointment of Simmons as Tahs Captain has to go down as one of the weirdest, oddest, most inexplicable decisions ever made in pro rugby

And perhaps to cap it off, the stupidest

I think Simmons is a really good guy who is somewhat maligned, but he doesn't have the on-field presence to bring the motivation and direction the team needs. I actually think Hunt would have been the best option out of what's available but maybe the dynamics aren’t right within the team. At least with Hunt I see him talking out there. We need someone to help the team actually adjust to the flow of the game while motivating them to lift when needed.

What I wouldn't give for a Alun Wyn Jones type character.

Genuinely bizarre, and even more unfortunate it is very hard to unwind.

Watching The Tahs A team play, Tafa is running hard and strong at the line and making metres at lock, Harris has speed and strength at 6. Tizzano is smashing at 7. Tepai is running and chasing well. Beanpole is stealing lineouts.

Some of the young backs like Ramm are running strongly.

Need to work on the ruck and players are getting isolated.
