If Foley is not a 10, just a converted 15, then who in the main squad is a specialist 10! That's right, no one. If you are right Cheika has no specialist main squad choices at 10 at all!

"Converted 15s" (Larkham and now Beale) seem to do alright as 10s. Especially if they have a passing game worth talking about which it appears Foley does.

so why is Foley a converted 15?
Good point..I might be presuming something and wrongly calling a 10 who was converted to fullback then back to 10 .... I'm happy to be enlightened as i can remember Mark Ella calling him to be switched to ten last year. What was his junior position?

still think Sam Lane and maybe Lucas will get some time at 10. .At least off the bench to spark something. Foley was 10 by necessity not choice . Different coach remember guys he may want a specialist not a 15 convert.
Bernard Foley played Colts at Sydney Uni for 3 years, scaraby. As near as I can remember he would have played at 10 in every game and thus would have had a very solid grounding in the sinister arts of the five-eighth.

All Beale's junior rugby and early s. 15 was as a 10.

That doesn't seem so different to Foley by all reports.

I am merely pointing out that people sometimes unfairly identify that players as only able to play a certain position because that is where they looked good at one point. What invariably matters more is where he wants to play than where we want him to play.

The fact that a wallaby backline player played all his junior rugby at 10 is not surprising either: theres a fair chance that he would have been the standout in every team he played in (which was certainly true of Beale). Even Drew Mitchell was a 10 as a kid from what i have read on here.

Perfect 10 model: Foley reveals his ambition

RISING Waratahs back Bernard Foley has put Test-capped teammate Berrick Barnes on notice with a declaration he wants to make the No.10 jersey his own next year.
Foley played at five-eighth as a junior but was used by former coach Michael Foley at fullback for most of last season after joining the Waratahs, with Barnes at No. 10 or inside-centre.
Foley intended transitioning his new recruit to five-eighth as he gained experience and used him there towards the end of the season, with Barnes outside and Adam Ashley-Cooper at fullback.

I agree, I have no idea why they want so many outside backs and not 10s and centres.

Kingston, Betham, Turner, Mitchell, Hodge, Crawford, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) isnt just an outside back. Some may not like him as a centre but he should definitely be considered one.

He's probably collectively the world's best 13/14/15 and in a pinch 12. He isn't the best at any of them individually, but he's international standard at all of them (except 12 IMO).

About the post that Gaffney was DOR: this was in the Aussie from Brett Harris:

Cheika, who will coach the forwards and defence, hoped to finalise his "compact" coaching staff over the next few weeks.

With Alan Gaffney focusing on backline play at the set piece, Cheika is looking for an attack coach and a scrum consultant.

Oh dear. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. A trivial detail perhaps, but misspelling the coach's name is not necessarily a good augury, unless of course they were deliberately trying to convey the message of business as usual.

Do you remember how many of those he played with Nick Phipps as his half Bruce?

No attack from set pieces?
I was beginning to worry that maybe the 'Tahs would risk losing their support base by implementing radical change. But I should have had more faith in the firm hand of Jason Allen.

The announced coaching configuration plus the video labelling has given me renewed confidence that 2013 will see a continuation of our glorious endeavours throughout 2012.

I may be grasping at straws, but I wonder whether Gaffney's DOR duties plus Cheika's use of him as a second set of eyes, somewhat independent of the detailed coaching, means he will not be loaded up with all the attacking responsibilities? Or maybe its a sign that we will do a lot of attacking off first phase? Its a worry though. I would not have thought there were a lot of uncommitted top class attack coaches roaming around Shute.

Anyone got any good suggestions?
