it pains me that the tahs (and all the other aussie teams for that matter) have not figured out the value the marquee player can bring
they all waste their spots on kiwis or saffas. and how many of kiwis or saffas can we expect to purchase a jersey in their home country to support an australian team?
anyone who doesnt know what im talking about should look into how many people throughout asia began to support manchester united once park ji-sung was signed. think of the value (in merchandise) of signing an argentine or american player?
im sure if they tried they could find a player that offered a similar skills set but marketing wise offered so much more~
christ if they signed bod they would sell thousands of shirts in ireland plus every irish supporter in australia would turn up to the tahs games!

The biggest difference between rugby and soccer is the way they are selected for internationals. In soccer it doesnt matter were you play if you are the best you will be picked for your national team. Were as in rugby almost all unions require you to play in their local league.

This means you wont ever get a big NH signing because most players wont give up that test chance. You might get someone like a 36 year old BOD but with the limited squad sizes and the level of comp in super rugby its a massibe gamble.

After last night's excellent outing against the Poms I, for one, would like to see an early season trial of 12. Horne, 13. AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and 15. Barnes.

Daryl Gibson appointed assistant coach

Daryl Gibson will join the HSBC Waratahs coaching team next season, working alongside head coach Michael Cheika and assistant coach Alan Gaffney.

The former All Black centre and Crusaders’ assistant coach brings a wealth of international coaching and playing experience.

Currently touring Europe with the Maori All Blacks, Gibson helped guide the Crusaders to the 2011 Super Rugby final, securing semi finals places in 2009, 2010 and 2012, having previously won four titles as a player.

Announcing his appointment today, Cheika said that Gibson would bring more than just his coaching experience to the HSBC Waratahs.

“Darryl is the guy who most fitted the vision we have for the team and for NSW rugby,” said Cheika.

“The new values that we are setting down he believes in already and that was the first thing we considered.

“To enact the change we want to make here, we need to change everything. I wanted someone fresh. Someone that guys here haven’t had much to do with or been coached by. We need to change the voices, change the approach.

“Darryl has excellent skills in the areas we wish to improve, in the continuity of attack and around the ruck.

“He has great experience of Super Rugby and in that sense his experience is a good complement for mine and Alan’s.

“He also has a very rounded approach to the game, having coached in Super Rugby and in the UK and against teams from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and all over Europe. He’s been a successful player and a coach at that level.”

Speaking from the Maori All Blacks’ camp in England, Gibson described the chance to join the HSBC Waratahs as a fantastic opportunity.

“I was attracted to the role by Michael Cheika’s vision for the team,” he said.
“His passion and commitment to turning the Waratahs into a winning team made it an easy choice. When you get a group of people committed to being better everyday then winning becomes a by product.

“The Waratahs underperformed last season and I know from Michael that the players are working very hard at the moment so they can earn the respect of fans and become a team that the people of NSW will be proud of and want to come and see.

“We need to reconnect with the people of NSW, to create a deep connection with our community, where fans feel engaged with the team and proud of our performances every week. It’s a fantastic challenge and I wouldn’t be shifting my family to Australia if I did not believe in the people charged with that responsibility.

“Michael Cheika and Alan Gaffney have a wealth of rugby experience and I’m sure I am going to learn plenty from them and also add in my way to the coaching staff.”

Gibson will join the HSBC Waratahs’ pre-season preparations early next month. He will assume responsibility for the team’s attacking skills and continuity play, with Alan Gaffney taking charge of attack from set plays. As well as working with the forwards, Michael Cheika will manage the team’s defence.

Hope this recycled Crusader coach has a better reception and success rate than the previous coach from Crusaderland.

Wonder what sort of reaction this will bring from the more rabid of our xenophobic posters who seem to believe only those born here should coach here.

School Names is not my strong point. I have already been outed in the NSW Under 16 thread for the sin of referring to Knox Grammer as Knox College.

At least you have probably spelled "Grammer" the same way as most of the kiddies up at Knox Grammar. The English teaching up there has never been a strong point...

Their work in combining stewed, pureed fruit with religious worship is unmatched though.

I understand one of our 1st XV players 'back in the day' got in trouble for repeatedly singing lyrics from Crying in the Chapel during lineouts when playing Knox.

I don't think anyone has that view for a provincial side, I certainly hold that view for a national side however. Well not born, but an Australian to coach the Australian national side.

I for one think the Gibson appointment i a very astute one. And it's a bit of a coup. Good luck to them. There will now be absolutely no excuse whatsoever to not play the wide expansive game.

Hopefully he can fast track the young Fijian kid, Volavola too. Coz a backline of 10- Volavola, 11 - Mitchell, 12- Barnes, 13- AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), 14- Turner, 15- Foley really wets my appetite. Then throw in the man made of glass - Horne after 65 mins when the defence is tiring so hopefully he can have an impact and there's a good opportunity to make the semis there. If only we had a 9 of any worth!

I assume now that if Quade has gone the Tahs will need to refill an EPS spot as Sam Lane will look to return to the Reds?

He can't just leave the EPS can he? He lives in Sydney and is seen as the backup flyhalf I don't see why he'd want to leave.

To live in brisbane and be the first choice flyhalf. Not to mention a pay rise.

All that and the opportunity to play outside genia and have tapuai and Ioane running off your passes.

seen by who? Let's remember the Tahs Management stupidly allowed Foley to sign up all but 2 blokes whilst he was trying to get out!

Including Lane.................

if Lane goes to Qld, what it will do will free up a space on the roster for an overseas marquee player after the Lions tour..................wonder who that could be?

I thought I read somewhere that he had the clause to leave if a full time spot came up at the Reds due to the Quade affair?

I could be wrong, but you'd think it would be the best for all parties.........

And Head of Selectors Knuckles has already given up the first choice #10 slot to Volavola :).

If I was young Lane, I'd have my agent on the phone to Jim Carmichael now sounding things out, whilst also strategising an amicable and privately agreed exit from Tahland.

Negotiations in good faith can work in rugbydom and result in a win-win scenario that all parties are happy with, and potentially keen to do business with in the future.

There's only one regular season game left (against the Reds in Sydney) after the Lions tour. So would there be any point in getting someone in at that point, esp as they haven't played enough games to qualify to play the finals (if the Tahs make it).
