IS - he got sacked this Arvo.

Lee - I'm still not to sure of gaffneys involvement this year and what he actually did. If reports are true Foley & Co tried to have him sacked mid year as "cost cutting". Gaffney himself has also said he never got the chance to be hands on. If he is the right man or not I don't know but I don't think he can be judged on the Tahs 2012 version.

That's an interesting titbit. Could you elaborate?

It's known, in Ireland at least, that BOD smokes although it's not mentioned much in the media. Here's a link to an article that makes mention of Brian smoking while meeting a reporter. The article is from when Cheika was at Leinster and the incident recounted is from a few years earlier.

The extract talking about Brian is as follows:

You tell him the door opened and he walked in. Did he have his hair dyed blond then? Yes. Maybe. Probably. The Ireland captain walked through with two green bottles of beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other, a long plume of smoke drifting off into the hotel corridor.

The full article is worth a read as it gives a good insight into the type of person BOD is outside of the usual pre and post match interviews.

Not surprise Gaffney was let go as I've posted about his record with Ireland and Leinster on here a few times previously. If as WJ says he was prevented from being hands-on last year then that's a shame he didn't get a chance to redeem himself. However the Tahs backs play of last year would have fitted pretty well with the kind of stuff Ireland were producing during his stint as our backs coach.

From what I've read he seems like a genuinely nice person and there's no doubting his Rugby knowledge. Could be that he just needs to find the club that suits him for it all to come right again for him or it could be a case that Rugby has simply moved on too much.

At Leinster Cheika took a hands on role with back play, wonder if he'll appoint a new backs/attack coach. Personally I think there should be a specialist coach so that the head coach can focus on bringing all the elements together.

I don't think Gaffney was let go it was Bowen. Cheika and Gaffney are the only remaining coaches

Ah thanks for clearing that up. Going to be interesting to see how Gaffney goes next year then. I guess I'm going to have to put aside his record with Ireland and be open minded for next season so I don't take any prejudices into the new S15 season.

I saw Gaff coaching the backs at Victoria Barracks in closed sessions a few times whist Foley was doing lineout drills and he, Gaffney, was also doing generic stuff near The Loop with the backs.

Hardly any of the sessions of either were high class stuff at VB. I noticed the lineouts in one Tahs game were heaps better than in the practice sessions the previous week though I have no clue what that means. The back practice sessions were generally better than on game day but I don't know what that means either.

Bowen and Mumm looked more like helpers than anything else though they worked intensely with small groups.

But we're talking of about only 10 sessions that I saw in the season.

Gaffney did not end the season with flying colours in my eyes, though obviously I didn't see the whole picture.

BOD?

Waratahs say no........

The 33-year-old is off contract in June and, barring disaster, will travel to Australia with the British and Irish Lions squad next year. Cheika has expressed his regard for the Ireland captain but also his belief that O'Driscoll's ties to his homeland may prove too great.
"The top players in the world like Brian would all like to come down and see how they fare here but you have to remember it is very difficult for Irish players to leave Ireland," he said this week. ''Because when they retire, they get a big tax backpayment. He is obviously one of the highest-paid players in Ireland, so it would be a big decision for him to come here. But there is no doubt the thought about coming down here is with a lot of the top players over there. Whether it becomes a reality is something else.''

So I read the article. He doesn't smoke anymore, it was over 10 years ago.

"No more fags or peroxide. His mentor in UCD, John McClean, who as Leinster Schools coach did him the favour of moving him from outhalf into the centre, agrees that O’Driscoll is undoubtedly the best player to have ever come through the gates."

We're talking to early about Gaffney anyway. His actual title at the moment is Director of Rugby so they may hire another backs coach. Who knows, with the randwick connection maybe even Campo might get the chance to put his money where his mouth is.

Did I miss Bowen being moved on?

When you have a bad year as a team everyone gets a bit of the shit that is flying around. Its often hard to know who was really responsible for the disasters unless you are close to the team but independent from it. Fans just know that the year is going down the toilet. Knowledgeable fans have a few clues as to why that might be, but even if you asked all the players off the record, I'd bet you'd get a whole range of answers.

But having a year like last year has concentrated everyone's thoughts and I think this year we will know if Gaffney is past it or not. If the backs begin to play ensemble rugby in the Waratah tradition, Gaffney will be the man. If they have another year like last year then he is just a nice bloke who couldn't deliver. The only thing that sustains my hope is that his teams at Randwick in the 80's and 90's did know how to play. They did have the odd good player or two, though.

I still think everything depends on how Bernard Foley goes at 10. If we are to play an attacking brand of football it all hinges on the 10. If Foley gets injured early then it could get very ugly. Our only back-up is Barnes and he is a good NH 10 but he lacks the ability to run the line in an attacking way.

As lots of posters on here have suggested, however, the Tahs did not look fit enough to play a full game flat out last year. So it is somewhat worrying to see that the S&C coach is still on the team. The next few months are probably the key time for team preparation. If Tombleson was to be replaced, it should have happened before the start of pre-season I would have thought.

When you have a bad season, few people understand just how important morale is and just how fine the line between success and failure can be. Had the AR not made the dreadful forward pass decision in the very first game, the Waratahs would have gone home exhilarated with a great win and the Reds would have slunk away dejected. No one knows how that would have played out - perhaps the confidence of the team would have allowed them to go on and build through the season rather than spiral down as it did. The first four or five games next year will be very very important for squad morale. If the players can see something building then the uplifted morale will help the squad drive improvement. The most important thing the head coach can install in the team is belief.

What the ref/AR does is outside the team's control, but Carter's brainsnap advice to McKibbin to make that fateful kick and Alcock's missed tackle on Shipperley weren't. Forgive me for crying over spilt milk but those two pieces of incompetence feature very highly for me, and should've left a big black mark on those players' CVs.

I liked what I saw of the Tahs players & coaches climbing stairs in the pre-season. Early days but I am encouraged how Cheika has started off his coaching tenure particularly if he has punted Scott Bowen :D

OK, here are the options for the last EPS

In the meantime, the Waratahs say they are serious about breathing life back into the rugby union pathways at home.
And while the market for contractable players has shrunk considerably, the province appears to be walking the talk with the selection of four local talents to compete for the last position in the extended squad.

Disappointed Safaloi (sp?) hasn't got a look in as he looked the goods when SD were shown on the ABC. Out of the remaining players I am hoping it goes to Volavola as he looks to have some 'x-factor' about him and does the basics well.

I quite like that they've publically listed a few names that are in contention. It at least lets the players that miss out know that the Waratahs are looking at them and considering they're generally young guys, they'll know that if they have a strong 2013 there's every chance they could be part of the Waratahs in 2014.
