Interesting to see on the Tahs team sheet that Sarel Pretorius is attached to Gordon. Not the club I would have picked.

Hendrik Roodt went to Gordon as well because the club has a prominent South African contact who usually put's them up when they arrive in Sydney.

Peter Grant nearly played a few seasons ago. Hopefully he can continue bringing us some handy players.

I dont think he will actually play for them, after the season finishes, he says he is going to play currie cup.

With the positive reception of the return of afternoon Super Rugby to Sydney, it would be a good idea to consider scheduling the matches at Homebush for the afternoon. For better or worse, the Tahs are contracted to play two games out there for the next couple of years at least. So having those games played in the afternoon may reduce the reticence of fans from getting out to Homebush.

I reckon an afternoon Tahs vs Reds match would be an enticing day out for families. It would also allow fans plenty of time to return to the city to kick on if they so desire.

With a ground as big as Homebush, it would be an opportunity to experiment with ideas to drum up publicity for the Tahs and rugby in general.

In the lead up, the Tahs could have the players visit schools, community groups, make some appearances at local shopping centres etc to raise awareness of the game. If the game is scheduled during school holidays, then perhaps run a few training clinics in different parts of Sydney for kids during the week of the game and give attendees a free ticket to the match or a special family deal. They could run some clinics on the day like the Wallabies did last year before the Samoa Test, or like the Tahs did before the Sharks match this year.

They could also try something like offering a free ticket to people who have a season ticket to another sport, get some contact details as well to receive feedback on their experience.

No doubt there would be some challenges to staging afternoon games at Homebush (broadcast schedules, ground availability etc), but it maybe a worthwhile concept to make the matches out there more palatable.

Will SANZAR actually allow adjustments to the draw/schedule mid-season? If so, this is actually quite a good idea...

Although I don't know what I'd do with my free ticket as a season ticket holder of 'another sport', but that could work - I'd be cautious from a marketing/promotions point of view to cram too many eggs in to the one basket. Apart from anything else, if you do too many things at once it's hard to tell what's effective and what's just shit.

Big +1 to the ideas though.

Mr Mouse, I was thinking more for next year than 2012 in terms of scheduling as this year would be set in stone.

Agree that by doing too many things, it could be overextend resources...quantity over quality. From my perspective, alot of the Tahs marketing is preaching to the converted rather than trying to grow the game. The games at Homebush are the ones I would be using for promotions to the general community as it is unlikely to sellout and it is close to a vast section of the Sydney population and more convenient for them to get to than the SFS.

Yeah fair enough. Also given we did technically already play them at ANZ this year.

Tahs Brumbies? I wonder if ARU/SANZAR could be convinced it was for the good of the game...

What we REALLY also should do - and I've said this for years - is a rugby SOO at SFS and Suncorp somewhere in the season.

It's just commercial and code-promoting madness that a SOO series has not been somehow developed in Aus rugby.

I also believe that the hybrid series or single match that Dwyer and Ella et a are trying to develop has great $ income potential for rugby let alone the fact that it'd showcase rugby's virtues and pull league money and fan attention into the game.

The purists won't like any of this I know, but neither will they want to loan the NSWRU the millions in cash it'll soon need if its gate income doesn't start to rise well above what's being pulled in now. Soon enough, we'll have to get real.

Any news on the hybird consortium yet? Bobby D seemed to think it would be up and running this year in his podcast appearance, but I haven't seen anything lately

Thanks for the feedback IS. I am in the market for a job, but I don’t have a marketing background so wouldn’t have got a look in with the internship. However, it would interesting to learn what is the actual Tahs marketing strategy as it doesn't resonate like what the Reds are doing....WE ARE RED sums it up pretty well.

For example, last year, they had the Tah Patrol supporters group based in the northern end of the SFS, but it’s not there this year. Maybe the original organiser has moved on, but I thought it would have been worth pursuing. Towards the latter part of the 2011 Super Rugby season, Greg Growden was asking for submissions in his column to come up with a sidekick for Tah Man. The impression I got was that it was supported by Tah HQ. Who knows what has happened to that?

Not sure Jnor. The ARU was actively cold-shouldering it, and making little comment but patronizing remarks re 'unlikely to be supported', etc.

Why not explore it constructively, especially given that multiple rugby luminaries were positive over it and excited about its potential. And the code badly needs new income sources and marketing channels, especially in NSW.

Meanwhile, the ARU is mandating cost costs and economy measures throughout....and the laughable policy of the '30 man S15 squad'.

I don't think the ARU, the Tahs or the Reds are keen on the State of Origin idea, because it dilutes the value of the Super 15 franchises. What does "We Are Red" mean if there's another "true" Queensland team running around?

I think the issue for the ARU is that they believe that the "multiple rugby luminaries" are expecting to keep the promoters share of any income generated by the hybrid experience.
They would make more bucks adding an extra Bled match to the annual schedule.

"Let's make it a 'Best out of 23 games!!"

"What if we lose the first 11 games in a row"

"We'll play the other 10 matches in Hong Kong, Abu Dabi, Stockholm....the possibilies are endless!!"
