exISA, if we don't refer to it as the Premier School Boy Competitions, then whatever prestige it has left will be lost.


I realise that it is not that now but if we do not build it, then they will not come.

What other vehicle can we use to promote serious schoolboy competitions outside of the main insular association environments?

The main problem facing the Waratah Shield is that schools without a full-time rugby programme can't compete with schools that do. Augustines have been training twice a week since February, have played in the ISA, plus a few touring sides. How can a school whose players train once a week during school sport and compete in a local gala day compete with that?

The question you ask is a simple question that deserves a straight-forward answer. Unfortunately, there is no straight-forward answer. In fact, it is so complicated, that even after thinking about it for 15 seconds, I have a massive migraine... I need to lie down and forget anyone asked this obvious question.

If winning is the only thing, they can't. If that was all you would have an invitation only competition, that requires so many points before you qualify. The warratah cup exists for these qualifiers. At that level they compete, but as with any knock out there are first round losers (just ask the ISA u16s team)
To get through those qualifiers would need some level of competency gained outside of school and probably have the company of a few players that play club rugby together.
Just having a go and not being scared of failure is still worth a throw. Comparing these lads with schools that compete as a team regularly (not just the brookvale school) is not fair.

How do they compete?
Pull on their boots, put in their mouth guards and have a go, that is competing they may not win or they may loose badly. They might just have fun in the process

They can't.

Surely you do not want a three game four team Waratah Shield Competition that starts at Semis with Scots v Augies and NEW v Barker with the winners playing off for the shield.

The same philosophy would see a RWC with only the top 4 ranked nations participating. I mean what hope does Japan, Scotland, Italy or Ireland really have of winning? Why do they bother wasting their time and effort to show up when they have no chance of winning?

The Shute Shield would start and finish in August with only Manly, Woodies, the Hobbits and the Students playing. None of the rest have any chance.

Sport is about participation and development, both personally and as a team. Winning is nice but it isn't everything, and many people participate in sporting events knowing that they have no realistic chance of winning the premiership.

Hope it is slightly more competitive result than the last time Auggies and Oakhill met in the ISA. Lots to very little that day.

Well Why aren't the other schools involved, Frightened what Auggies might do to them ! Lol

no one needs to be scared of Augies. Oak Hill will have no better motivation than the Rat Park result earlier this year and a reversal of last years ISA and Waratah shield results.
I will be making the pilgrimage and try to post the scores as early as convenient
