With St Augustines now not going to Japan they have entered this years Waratah Shield. Other new schools participating this year are Kings Newington and Knox. This should be a great competition this year and getting closer to a true state champion school

Be alright if they let Canberra Marist and St Edmunds back in. It'd do wonders for rugby at Eddies. It's gone downhill bad since they were kicked out for being too good.

do they release the draw or is it just the schools that find out about it??

The powers that be have introduced a new pool system. Local govt and systemic schools to play 3 games on a single day. Winner will progress. Same with sports high schools and schools with established rugby programs. This was first introduced with the Sports High schools a couple of years ago but has been introduced state wide.

If you go to the NSW Schools Rugby site you will find a 11 page screed in the Resource section.
Just for the record there are 30 Schools entered, including `heavyweights' such as St.Augustines, Oakhill, Newington, Kings, Stannies, & Knox. St.Augustines are 1 of the 2 Schools that enjoy a bye in the 1st Round and then will play the winner of Normanhurst High & Winmalee High in the 2nd Round..
Round 1 is to be completed by 13/05/11 and Round 2 is to be completed by 22/06/11.
Final will be on 31/08/11.
It appears NSW Schools Rugby has joined with NSW CHS in the administration of this competition.

Back in the day there were at least a hundred entrants. I guess the problem might be the top end. Example being why would Forest High enter if they know they will have to play SAC in the first round. I remember in 2006 I was teaching at a sports high school on the Northern Beaches. Our Buchan Shield team had made it to round 4 after destroying a few of the locals. We drew Hills next. It was amazing how many late withdrawals we had. Players dont want to be destroyed and potentially hurt by schools which in some cases have better programs than the NTS or whatever they are calling it these days.

Looking at the information there are 30 teams initially in the main shield draw. These teams play a knockout competition until there are 4 teams remaining. these progress to the QF's.

There are also 5 sports high teams to compete against each other to see which two join the Shield at the QF's. Then there are 88 teams in the Waratah Cup to find two teams to also join the Shield at QF's.

This makes 123 teams involved in the Waratah Shield this year from all over the State

Looking at the past winners of the Shield Stannies won it in 1974 and again in 1980. from about 1983 the Shield was won mainly by non-CHS schools. From this I take it that it has been an open competition since at least 1974

Yes,I was at high school in those years.Some of the clashes between Matraville ( with the Ella boys)Randwick,North Sydney Boys High,Epping Boys High etc. were absolute epics and as good as any first grade game.I remember Randwick playing Matraville at Coogee one afternoon,it was the second biggest crowd ( apart from the Randwick v All Blacks match).CHS rugby in th Eastern Suburbs was a powerhouse then.Aaaaah !!

Kings competed in the 1975 Waratah Shield (Peter Philpott was the coach or sportsmaster) and were eliminated by Birrong Boys High in an early round. Birrong were beaten by Stannies in the semi, who were in turn beaten by Randwick in the final.

Had a look at the draw on the NSW Schools website and it seems to me that Newington College and Knox Grammar School have the easiest draw to the semi finals. They do not have to face a Sports High in the Quarter finals as they face the finalists of the Waratah Cup (ie for schools without a recognised rugby programme). If you discount Sydney Boys High, Newington's draw looks particularly favourable as they do not have to face a GPS, CAS or ISA opponent before the semis. Is there a seeding system for the draw?
