Most of the schoolboy forums inevitably get onto a discussion about who is the better/best schoolboy side in NSW.

As teams are segregated into separate associations, supporters resort to quoting results in trial games as evidence of their claims. Unfortunately some schools use trials as just that, trials of potential players, and some use them to garner 'scalps'.

Wouldn't it be great if all NSW rugby schools took part in the Waratah Shield and had a chance to truly test their claims. Whilst acknowledging the limitations of a knockourt format, winning the Shield would add some validity to claims of supremacy. In its current format schools are only committing to 5 or 6 Wednesday afternoon games spread over 3 or 4 months (assuming they make the final). The addition of the Waratah Cup as a 'qualifiers' tournament to the main Shield keeps the games to a manageable number whilst not excluding any potential entrants.

Without knowing the exact reason behind declining the 'offer' - St Edmunds has undergone a substantial attitude change with regard to Rugby. It isn't the chief focus as it once was, going off an informal chat with the current 1st XV coach.

In my opinion, having being excluded for being 'too strong', there wouldn't be much point investing the same amount of time, effort and money just to be kicked out again. As the GPS in Sydney will never accept an ACT team, there is no further avenue aside from developing the local competition. This is an issue for the schools, clubs and the ACTRU/Brumbies to address collectively.

This point could and should be applied to the Tuggeranong Vikings, tread carefully around those who've burned you in the past.

Keep an eye on Canberra Boys Grammar - they could be in for a big year.

Hey Empire,

totally agree mate. The ACT comp needs to be developed. I think Marist should have showed some solidarity with the old enemy and not played in the Waratah either. We all know the real final used to be between Marist and Eddies anyway. Generaly Eddies would come away with the points and then go to Sydney and blow some Sydney team off the park. If this didnt happen then it was Marist who did the same. The end result was removal from the comp for all ACT teams. Now they invite us all back? Marist should have joined Eddies and given the NSWJRU the proverbial finger to make sure their own comp was developed and strengthened.

Good to see Grammar strong this year. It is only good for the comp to see Marist and Eddies getting some strong opposition from other teams/schools. I would love to see Darra pick up it's game and then with a strong club or two the comp all of a sudden becomes very interesting.

My understanding is that Westfields Sports will play in a round robin against other Sports Highs, (Hills Sports, Endeavour, Matraville etc) with the winner and second place holder entering the Shield at the Quarter Final stage.

Westfield Sports last won the Waratah Shield in 2005

Should be an interesting game on Wednesday with Hills Sports to play Endeavour. A lot of Endeavour boys made CHS and only 2 Hills. I think Westfields play Prariewood. I believe Westfields did not field a team against Hills who WOF.

The administrators need to review their draw methodology for next year.

A thrashing of this order does no one any favors, but it is not St Augs fault. They should not have to run out their 16C's to make a Waratah Cup game a fair contest.

LT I think you might need to ring your local ambulance station and inform them of this game!

The Ambulance service of NSW tends to stock up on the 'body bags' when these two are to play each other in league, and given the shunning of Hills during the recent CHS rugby selections you can almost bet they will be seeking retribution!

Should be an absolute cracker!

Does anyone know if any team has won the Waratah Shield without imports!!! I remember Scots were in trouble years ago when they imported a side to win. I am not saying I am against imports but is it possible for the average school to win???

please define an "import". I think St Auggies won last year without imports
'Import' in the sense of these forums would mean any student (loose term) or lets just use the term player who does not pay all or part of their schools fees at a fee paying school such as St Augustines. The balance or total of the fees is paid by a third party such as the schools rugby club, old boys association, local Rugby Union or Leage club ,generous supporter, 'Edmund Rice' scholarship or some other kind of entity and this is then referred to by all parties as a 'bursary'. The 'player' in turn agrees to attend school regularly, wear the full school uniform occasionaly, abide by the schools rules less occasionaly, attend lessons other than P.E hardly at all but attend all training and matches without fail. The 'player' will commence their enrolment at the school generally between years 9 - 11 and give little if any consideration to the fact they have left another student whose parents have paid full fees since either year 4 or 7 relegated to the schools 2nd XV. In line with this definition, St Augustines would there for not qualify.

Most likely the last winners in line with this definition that did not have such a player would be St Patricks Strathfield in 1996. St Edmunds (not suprisingly under the guidance of John Papahatzis and his little mate Cleary) then commenced an era with another fine Christian Bros school St Edmunds that destroyed both the validity of the Waratah Shield and the ACT schools competition formerly known as the ASC.

Sorry, I digress....this is probably the most accurate and honest definition of an 'import' in schoolboy rugby.
