Slightly off topic, but does anybody think that Josh Holmes will ever fulfil his early promise? Good schoolboy, IRB junior player of the year... what happened?

George for mine. I remember that tackle in 1994 well, was sitting in a bar in Asia with a mixed crowd of Aussies & Kiwis, have to laugh now I think of it again. There were about 15 glamours on the dance floor wearing very little and no one was paying any attention at all. The sight of so many gutted kiwis was gold :yay

edit: got the tauntology bug...

THere was noone better besides Chris Whitaker and he kept getting selected because Eddie Jones had a boner for him. A new coaching regime selected him again after Jones left because Whitaker had decided to leave.

Fixed

:lmao: He was never as good. Surely Connolly would have pursued him otherwise.

*sigh* As explained slowly, and in very small words, Whitaker was the best halfback we had for the last two seasons he played here. Better than Gregan, both across the season and head-to-head. Say what you will about the quality of the forward packs each had in front of them, but the fact is Whitaker had a better pass, and a more able and effective running game. He also didn't stand and point at the rucks like Gregan (Jerry Collins loves that).

There was no justification for picking Gregan beyond the captaincy, and when Whitaker announced his contract in Ireland there was no justification in picking Whitaker at all.

Whits was better earlier in his career, but he suffered the same as Gregan towards the end, even those last two years you suggest he was our best. He looked slow and ponderous, not quite Gregan-like, but not as good as he was.

He received his opportunities, however few, but never grabbed them like he could have.
