probably an obvious combination of bothWere they great teams because of a great captain, or were they great captains because of a great team?

Pretty hard to be too critical of Hooper, there is no one in the starting side who would be guaranteed a starting stop and would be clearly better.
As to next year, let's wait to see who returns to form and who will be that guaranteed starter.

Sure, long way to go to get there however.
I would think Horwill would be the best captain we have but i think its pretty clear that Link doesn't see him as a starting player. He has a pretty good performance last week and Link still dropped him.
Quade for captain! I fucking love it. Ex-communicated from the team to come back as leader and savior. The romance! The drama! The intrigue! What a story!
He actual does present himself very well off the field and has worked hard ot improve his weaknesses on the field. My only concern is he's had 4 stints on the sideline for the last 3 years.
I was happy to accept him flaws as a captain as he was young and would grow into the role. Richie McCaw's leadership was questioned early on also if I recall correctly.
But his handling of the Beale issue in public has come across poor and shows he has a long way to go in some aspects.
Slipper is the answer to the above. Hooper is in no way a shoe in as a starter when Mr Pocock is fit and gets some rugby under his belt. Slipper on the other hand has consistently fended off fit competitors for his starting jersey. Would he be a good Wallaby captain? That can't really be answered with any authority at this stage. Personally I don't like the idea of a prop as our captain. Ref management can become very awkward at set piece.
Loved the tactics when he captained the Reds against the Lions. Ran the ball from everywhere.
Definately scraping bottom of the barrel, if Moore is captain material - essentially last man standing. Even as an experienced campaigner, Moore just doesnt string too many good games together (lots of hmmm games), if it was a merit-based criteria. QC (Quade Cooper) also fits this hmmm criteria. For my mind, Genia is still the best choice, but his absence and Hoopers ascendency into the 7, and lynchpin in the open is by no means a fluke - given Gill presence. Should Genia return to sizzling form, or even sound form, hes the best captain - has been world best, makes sound decisions, big game experience, very diplomatic and media savvy and not perturbed in demand more from the playing group - cause he leads by example.
