My pommy mates will have a good laugh, because now the shoe's on the other foot (we have a dominant scrum) how good are those penalties at scrum time on the oppo's feed?

Barnes is of the Nthn Hemisphere school of thought that if you get monstered, you concede a penalty. Down south we tend to say if the balls out, play on. All of a sudden the Northern school of thought is suiting us nicely.

I too thought he managed the game pretty well overall.

Two areas are a dogs breakfast though in international rugby, and they were again in this match:
  • What constitutes advantage from a knock on / fwd pass
  • Are you allowed to interfere with the halfback at a ruck

or scrum. The SA half was all over Genia monstering and holding him at the scrum -poor reffing there and very poor observance by the TJ's - I refuse to call them that new glorifying name

Ah yes, I remember that was my other, um scream. Something along the lines of 'You actually have to go somewhere for there to be an advantage, Barnes'.

I think the IRB should tell the refs that they have to play a minimum of 6 phases before calling ADV over.

If Burgess is going to cop flak for his passing then the same goes for Barnes & Giteau those two have a horrible long ball.

I know Larkham was probably the best passer of all time but these two are sub standard & need to improve.

If you want massive long passes, you would pick Cooper at 10 and O'Connor at 12. But Giteau and Barnes are the most experienced and best we have atm. Remember Barnes is only 23, he has alot of improvement in him still.

I'm with Gagger, whispers and Scotty on this one, Barnes played very short (and therefore, poor) advantage. This seems to be typical of NH refs.

Me agreeing with this three! Shit, who's on top? Who's underneath? Who's missing out? :p :p :p

Somebody should take the names of the 15 Oz players who ran on last night at SunCorp and get Deans to start them in the next game in Wellington. Where did they find them?

Even when the score was 9-6 I was quite content with the level of the performance because the forwards were having a dig in the contests. I am sick and tired of the Boks and Blacks charging into tackles and rucks and winning or saving ball whilst our guys watch them and make opposition forwards, and their lucky backs, look better than they are. Mind you: I have been saying that for a while.

Last night the mice roared, but it will just be a blip in the 3N landscape if they don't keep doing it match after match from now on.

With Rocky back and being the 3rd lineout guy, Oz could afford two shortie on-ballers at 7 and 8. The backrow was well balanced and they outplayed the Boks backrow at the breakdown, though Juan Smith had a terrific game away from the rucks.

The front foot ball the forwards earned - and having a scrummie who can throw the ball so it can be caught time after time - both did wonders for the backs who, of a sudden, were given confidence that hasn't been seen since the EOYT at Twickenham.

On the pre-game show they were interviewing old scrummie John Hipwell who, with Ken Catchpole, was the best distributor of crap ball the world has ever seen. Geez, I thought, I hope that he gave a few words of advice to young Genia for his first starting game. He must have - geez sometimes Genia looked like Hippie last night - what a debut - and good on him for taking that snipe and going for the try.

Burgess lost form in the Super14 this year this year and got dropped and came back better. He will be back for the Wallabies too but he will have to get his pass up to speed. How has gone through the system from Joeys to the Wallabies without be able to nail his passes as an international scrummie should?

Great Oz scrum. Fat Cat got the MOTM gong but we already know his quality. The more significant thing this season has been the emergence of Alexander as a THP and I am delighted to have cyber egg on my face because I was calling for Shepherdson to be the THP backup for Baxter. Now my doubt is about Cowan as the backup.

And talking of Big Al: I know bugger all about srummaging but I thought he got a raw deal from the refs. However I thought that Deans was correct to replace him because he was getting pinged.

Well done to the backs even though they were a bit flummoxed in getting so much good pill. But Deano - why not swap Barnes and Giteau? Opponents are shit scared of Gits close to the scrums and rucks. One further out and the brown stuff will be sliding down their legs.

Even if Turner is fit for the next game I would like to see Hynes start as he has a bit more of the X factor about him.

Geez - how good would Ioane have been last night?

PS - I hope that somebody swapped jerseys with Fourie du Preez last night. Maybe we could get some DNA from his sweat and clone him. What a player.

I'm still not convinced about Alexander at THP. Starting against a fresh Woodcock should give us a much better idea of where he's really at. Hopefully he comes through unscathed.

Having said that, I have to say that I'm loving this new-look Aussie scrum. I'm so used to thinking "Oh crap" every time a scrum was awarded that it's bloody amazing to look forward to it now. Every penalty we win there is almost like a double-penalty, since it used to be that they would mostly go the other way. Now if we can just get a pushover try against the kiwis... That might just be too much awesomeness for me to survive though. A pushover try against just about anyone will do.

They did well, although we obviously lack some go forward using the smaller 8. If anything though, you'd think this line up will be even better suited to combat the kiwis.

Are you sure you wrote that right, Lee. I think Turner has the great X factor by far, but Hynes is more dependable, particularly in defense. Like you say though, Ioane is definately head and shoulders above both when it comes to the ability to break a game open.

how bad is TPN injured?

If he's out, what's our next option? Has to be Sean Hardman doesn't it? Although that does go against the whole 'out with the old, in with the new' policy. Fitzpatrick?????

What's going on with Moore? He was awesome last year and this year he is fairly ordinary, I can't understand it.

Done too many km between major services. Needs a grease and oil change and a good rest. Nothing much else wrong.

No, No, No, although i am very much a Reds man, you cannot bring Hardman back. We are all going forward...

Adam Freier is back playing. If the choice is Hardman & Fitzpatrick, he would have to be considered.

Fitzpatrick. why not. nothing to lose everything to gain at this stage.

Because he isn't good enough yet to start for the Tahs, let alone anything higher.

Was that the last we see of the John Smit experiment at 3 ?

The Boks should tap him on the shoulder, and let him go out with some dignity. He was certainly outplayed in Brisbane, and not for the first time this year.

Hardman would have to be the next best choice IMO, there is a fine line between chasing youth and just been silly.

Louie I agree, the kid, Fitspatrick would be good for the run. Freir has been Ok but not consistent and Hardman would be revisiting old ground. I wonder if there are any hookers around the world that can throw consistently "inside shoulder" ?
