It's also important to remember that you cannot compare scores between camps/teams/programs as there are far to many variables. When teams test they obviously try to keep things standardised to compare their own scores. Reliability is a big issue. If you spend 5 minutes online you'll see that most Yank HS kids run faster than any rugby player, reliability issues with timing and equipment etc.

Also as Dan Baker (Brisbane Broncos S&C) will tell you, don't believe everything you read in the paper. Teams in all sports are fairly protective of there training data etc.

That said, this article mentions Christian Lealiifano being the 2nd fast Brumby in 2008 at 5.17s http://www.callummahoney.com/strong-enough/

thats because americans run 40 yards, 40 yards = 36.57m... which is almost a 10% shorter distance

This is a video i found of Digby running the 40m in pre season with the reds,

This is a similar video of Rocket running the 40m in pre season with the reds as well

Hope this is helpful :)

The difference in track and field training levels is so ridiculously obvious it makes you wonder if they just give Diggers a 5 minute crash course on how to run the 40 before letting him go o_O

Speaking to a mate who's a 10.4 sprinter he said that he dought the accuracy and said probably run on beam gates

Said Bolts time for roughly guide is

Bolt 10m 1.9 2.8 3.7 4.5-6 5.5 6.3 7.2 8.1 9

So guess comparing between different teams might be hard as all different but with in the team might be better..

I know bolts slow out the block but I'd doubt any rugby player is as quick as him over 40 :)

Bolt got clocked in a track-and-field style 40 YARD dash at 4.65

Subtract his reaction time and you're in the 4.3-4.4 range (the big difference between track times and combine times is that in track you are recorded from the moment of the gunshot, in a combine your time starts as you pass the first pylon) which is very, very fast but not ridiculous.

Based on that there's probably a few rugby players that could challenge him on the 40. Bolt makes the most of is running style between 50-80m where he absolutely destroys people with his combination of stride length/turnover when he's "striding out".

In rugby being fast over 10-15m is what really matters anyway.

Have the put a Pint down on the halfway line and told Dan Cole to have a go? I reckon he'd snot the lad.

Seriously, speed is just one part of the thing. Stepping, awareness of space are as important. Look at O'Driscoll, He isn't particularly fast but gets through a gap like few others do.

How many elite players (apart from wingers) 'sprint' 40 metres, not many. most breaks, half-breaks are 5-10 metre full-on, then offload; who is quickest over 10 metres!

All this talk about bloody backs like they're the only ones who can run quick. Pfft. Michael Hooper is allegedly a former beach sprint champion who clocked 4.79s over 40m. Giddy up!

There are two types of useful pace for rugby players: acceleration over a very short distance and top end speed over a longer one. Few players have both and different positions demand different types. A guy like Hooper would want (and has) that very rapid acceleration to scoot through a gap. JOC (James O'Connor) had it too and so does Genia. Guys like Rod Davies or the Badge are more your classical sprinters who you want accelerating onto the ball and then maintaining a high pace in an open field running type of situation. That's why they play wing or fullback.
