Simplist answer is that all the decisions are justifiable and acceptable, except for the 2 hookers which is a very very unecessary risk.

With one big "objective" whopper, all the other "subjective" ones start getting lumped on when people criticise.

Lets be fair, Chieka's left field selections are far better than the same ones we saw from Deans for 2011, with on one 7 in the whole squad. As for 2007, we knew that we didn't have a scrum (tight ((Loose)) 5) that could hold its own.

So in those terms this is a much more balanced side.

I like others am somewhat mystified at the Douglas selection, just as I have been about the exclusion of Jones right from the first squad announcement. If people stop and think, there may well be a link there and an explanation for both. Somebody earlier in the thread said something about Chieka being a fan of Douglas and him having something that suits Chieka's game plan. If you check on my posts at the start of the S15 this year I suggested that a significant weakness in the Tahs was the lack of an effective replacement for Douglas and that I didn't rate Dennis to be that replacement. Even though I don't think that the demise of the Tahs this year was down to the loss of Douglas, it certainly effected the forward play that the Tahs were able to put out, it lacked the intensity at times that the Tahs consistently produced in 2014. That said it was the one dimensional play and no real kicking options in the back three that killed them against the Highlanders and against the Force x2.

As for Horwill, I think that he was lucky to get a few games as his form was pretty poor for most of the year, even after his discipline problems of the first few weeks improved. If injuries to Carter and Simmons didn't happen it is quite likely he wouldn't have got a run at all. Yes Horwill has been playing much better in the RC, but IMO he could well have missed out because that improvement is seen as the ceiling of his performance potential, and given his form since his injuries and most recently in the S15 that may well be a fair argument.

Similarly the selection of White, who I thought was very slow to clear the ball at nearly every ruck from the start in Bled 2 even in those first minutes when the forwards were going forward. Still I think he had far better form in front of Genia, who I haven't seen anything from in 2 years to warrant test selection.

The puzzling thing for me is the selection of so many wingers/ outside backs. Horne I can understand as he can effectively cover 12 and 13 and IMO was the form winger of the Australian Super sides. For mine one of Speight and Tomane would have been left out for a third Hooker.

But there you go, I think I understand the thought around the non-selection of Horwill and White which seems to me to be the biggest whinge that people have.

The non selection of a third hooker whilst a risk, and I think an unnecessary one, is a topic I think people have seized on to highlight the "recklessness" of Chieka and Co. No matter how you look at it the side is as I said a better balanced side and more complete than anything we have seen since 1999. 2003 I can't include as they out-performed with scrum "rulings" being favourable to be nice. The squad selection certainly isn't a QRU - RG moment.

I'd hate to be the one announcing to the non first choice wingers that they had to draw straws to see who has their finger broken.
They won't need to. Whichever winger slacks off the most at training will automatically default to being the third string hooker in the squad. First live scrummaging session after that there will be a spot in the squad for Hansen.

I'm already bored with the 'if we lose a hooker it's a catastrophe' argument. There's clearly a contingency plan in place that I'm sure will prove to be completely adequate if it's required in the next 3 games. As previously mentioned, by the time we play England we will have James Hanson in the squad. I hope he enjoys his holiday in the French Riviera in the meantime.

I reckon its a good squad that should top our group and make the final.
Sure there are a few left field picks but i think Chieks knows what he is doing and the squad is stronger than its been for a long time.

I agree with you Gnostic on everything but Jones he is a good super player his work rate and lineout are good but he just doesn't bring the heavy grunt/mongrel that's needed in test rugby especially if he's being used as a lock option.

Speight too throw in to Skelton straight back.. Speight foot race vs a Hooker..

Im mostly worried about the second row, Douglas has no form or fitness.. Playing the Pooper will mean no willy so then it's mumm and Simmons or Simmons and Douglas, not a great jumper either..

With the talk of Deans, it's funny to think that in the not too distant past we were discussing how Link was building his squad for RWC2015.

There's no right or wrong to selecting 2 or 3 hookers. Teams have gone to WCs with both. If I were a betting man though, I'd say Link would've selected 3 hookers. But that's neither here nor there. It just shows that all coaches have different strategies, plans and ways of looking at things.

He won't be if there's no long term injuries in the squad though, as already mentioned.........

It's also all well and good to have a contingency to cover the gamble/risk but it doesn't mean it will work. Case in point, no back up 7 in 2011.

Interesting the whole thought that because Cheika is the coach he by rights knows better than all.

During the EOYT there was a lot of discontent. That discontent appeared to be founded as the Wallabies returned a 25% winning ratio.

Come the RC, Cheika seemed to alter his strategy to where the majority of discontent was generally people with absolute unrealistic expectations like Beale or Hooper not being selected, or Timani being selected despite the fact he was a poor line out option and the back 5 already had a surplus of them. He achieved 75% winning success in these 4 games against opposition perceived to be considerably more difficult. There was still discontent from certain sections, like their always will, but the majority was happy.

Now the major discontent has ensued again. Will the results be a repeat of last time?

Whilst we are focussing on the omissions, the media seem to have honed in on the selection of cooper..

Of course. Foley is apparently "safe" so taking Quade is a huge risk.

Cheika doesn't 'by rights know better than all', TWAS. For a start, there is no 'all', since not everyone disagrees with him. However he has access to much more information than we do. This 'major discontent' is over two selection choices. It doesn't take much to get people majorly discontented.

Mumm offers nothing in terms of getting us past the advantage line when he carries and got found out big time in defence against the ABs. Horwill much more deserving in terms of overall performance.

Further to that point, the lock who has offered the most physicality and ball running attributes at a Super Rugby level was never considered.....

Cheika taking on Tony's captain's picks to his own detriment?

Although it's Cheika's job to make these picks, isn't that what we pay him for? To pick and coach the side - he then lives or dies (metaphorically) on the subsequent results.

I mean if you want an international coach with a bizarre selection policy, PSA is the gold standard - Cheika isn't even in the same league as him.

Personally I think it's a great squad. TRC was not simply a trial for RWC selection. There is often a lot of luck involved in people thinking you are 'in form' or not. Just being in the right place at the right time can make a big difference.

I'm glad Chieka picked Douglas over Horwill and Genia over White as in my opinion (and obviously the coach's) the better rugby players got selected.
