One would guess the vice captains will be in the starting side as well. So 2, 7 & 14 are penciled in?

Maybe not so. Example - Scott Fugistaller officially shared the Captaincy with Lord Higginbotham at the Rebels, yet barely started a match. I don't think he was ever a Captain in an official capacity on-field this season.

Edit: I think the goal was to bring him on in the last 10-15min to take over, but he struggled to get on the bench with a very competitive back row. Similar to the scenario presented by Slim.

yeah, the VC's are more to stand in when the (C) is off the field, they don't have to start and/or play a full 80.

Is my memory right in thinking that when Hooper took over last year Slipper became the VC?

Nah. I doubt Graham's struggles as a coach have to do with the fact that Horwill's 7 runs per game and 7 tackles per game aren't as dominant as they once were.

I say it like that because this is the impact his decline has on each game - 14 real involvements.

Realistically none. IMO.

Ok maybe Folau, cause the darkness are able to harness and develop their talent much better than the wobs do. Shame really. Just inadequate.

Cause bringin back the old firm Gits, Mitchell, Mumm etc, is not a glowing endorsement of the player R&D arm of the ARU.

Is this what win at all costs looks like? Very grey road ahead

Horwill, on his form this year, is out there in a category called "brain explosion", a category usually inhabited only by backs. The last time he played to his best form was three years ago. That's way too long to get any credit. He was not good this year even when he was on the field. In the big match-up in the last round against the Tahs I thought he was anonymous.

Maybe Dennis gets points for being able to play like Fardy at 6 if required. But he loses a bag of points for being in charge of the Waratahs lineout. It varied from below average to a clusterfuck all year and he was its boss. So he would not make my squad as a jumper.

Teams usually play with a bruiser second rower and a jumping second rower. Think Botha and Matfield, Eales and Morgan/Giffen etc. Its unusual to have two bruiser/jumpers though Whitelock and Retallic are close. But then NZ's primary jumper is Read. They do some things differently over the ditch.

George Smith put the best part of a Super Rugby season into the Brumbies before getting that Wallaby jersey remember. My view on the Mumm selection would be very different if the path was the same.

I said Dennis wasn't starting material so have no idea about your jumper comment. I agree with you.

I get the stereotype about the dynamic of lock combinations. NZ plays it's locks the way you say to free up its backrow. No brainer that one. A more than capable lineout lock is not that uncommon. Retallick and Etzebeth spring to mind though Horwill has been playing in that mould before those blokes hit the scene. Big physical lads but with a high level of agility. Not for one minute do I say that Horwill has shown great form though I what do say is that he has a bloody good skill set and over his career as a whole has set a high standard and that includes the top level.

Don't get too despondent Seb. Phil Waugh was VC during the 2007 RWC despite being 2nd choice.
