George Smith has said he is available for selection... could he be in the squad for the TRC.. who would want to be a selector

Defence wins World Cups not attack. You only have to look at every final to realise that. With your openside at 86% tackle success that simply isn't good enough. We all know that Pocock goes into more rucks whether its turning the ball over or slowing it down so defence can set. Hooper is a better attacking weapon no doubt but I revert back to my point that World Cups are never won on attack only on good solid defence.

That's pretty true. I've said elsewhere that goal kicking and defence invariably wins knock out games at the RWC. We'll need to be excellent at both to make it out of our group, let alone make a dent in the tournament. I'd go with Pocock and QC (Quade Cooper) at the crucial positions of 7 and 10 for the above reasons, but a few others as well. We can still play an attacking, ball in hand game with those two as well.

When and where?

edit - Yes, I see it. Has to be Moore you would think otherwise he will be tied down to starting Hooper in most games.

I'm not saying Moore isn't the best candidate for captain but I really don't like the idea of replacing our captain around 65 mins.

I would have Moore as captain with Hooper and Pocock his deputies. At least one of them will always be on the park.
Hooper has done an admirable job and his captaincy tenure will come, but lets face it, he was the last man standing last year and he does not have the experience of Moore or Pocock.

Again stats are getting in the way of the argument because of different game plans, Hooper leads the defensive line for the Tahs from the 10/12 channel, often as the shooter, they use his pace to disrupt the attacker's structures

That person will always miss more tackles.

Pocock wants to be the second defender in the Ponies system, to have the opportunity to poach, in that system a second defender will rarely miss

If the calculation for captain was 80 minutes played regularly at test level, that would negate Moore, Hooper or Pocock as all won't be likely to play the 80.

It really worries me that Cheika has said that prior to the game against the Boks he'll be naming either Hooper or Moore as RWC Captain, for several reasons.

1. I think the recent poll taken on this website suggests that most fans believe that Hooper should not be captain. Cheika would be blind to public opinion, and the obvious, if he named Hooper ahead of Moore.

2. It suggests to me that he plans on starting Hooper in every major game this year. That's not necessarily a right or wrong call, but I think that even the biggest Hooper fan would concede that Pocock could prove to be a better option for the wallabies at 7. It would be a very stubborn approach to decide, before any test match rugby is played, that Hooper will be the backbone of the Backrow, and Pocock will only play a supporting role.

Cheika obviously has an idea of how he wants to play and what personnel he needs to play that game, which is fine, but he needs to remain flexible. If he names Hooper captain and TRC is a major failure, he'll have backed himself into a corner.

Personally I'd like to see him name Moore as Captain with Hooper and Pocock his deputies.

I think people are reading too much into it. All Cheika has really done is said that the captain will be one of the two guys appointed captain last year.

I don't think that means that he hasn't already decided that his preferred captain is Moore or that Pocock might start ahead of Hooper. If he has decided Moore is his preferred captain, there's no way he's going to announce that prior to the Rugby Championship squad being announced.

I agree with what you say. Cheika may well make the right decision in the end and he may simply be wanting to portray to Hooper that he is still in the frame (even if he isn't). I'm just saying that if he did name Hooper as captain for the world cup, before any rugby is played, that would seem to me to be a mistake. Particularly given that he's essentially said that whoever he names at captain will be captain for the WC.

What reason could there be for saying anything regarding the captaincy?

Both will be in the leadership group if fit.

I don't even think he said that. The context of his quotes is really unclear:

"I have an idea ....... it is pretty clear. Hooper was the last captain and Stephen Moore was the captain before

"Obviously I am going to pick one … and then we are going to have a leadership team around those guys."

It all comes down to how you interpret the word 'one'. It could mean 'one of those two', but that isn't what he said. I think it just means 'a captain', which is also why he says 'obviously' because that response is far more obvious than him picking one of Moore and Hooper.

So clearly the answer is Dave Dennis.

Journalists ask questions and the coach needs to engage on a level greater than saying "no comment" or "I haven't decided."

I think he should be in the extended squad for rugby championship - in fact I think all 3 of Mitchell, Gits and Smith should. Just to have more experienced heads in the squad.

Don't think Smith should ever be in the starting 23 though with Hooper and Pocock fit, or even Gill - Smith should be there as mentor type role.

George is obviously a very good player, but it's not a position we are short in quality depth and yes the rules have changed to allow him to be selected but that doesn't mean he should be selected..
