Yeah Hook is a "nearly" - or what I call a "notter". He has been cursed by versatility. He was seen as the successor to S.Jones but they didn't leave him there alone: as soon as there was a need in the centres or at fullback he was torn away. One saw the sense of it; coaches are human.
I've always seen players Like Hook and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) as barometers of the quality of their respective national sides. They're versatile quality players and generally find their way into the starting line up somewhere.
So those occasions when they are on the bench speaks of a team with top quality in-form players all across the backline and when they are fit for selection and can't get into the 22 then the opposition are in for a torrid afternoon/evening if the backs see much ball.
