Wallabies v Japan 25 Oct

Jorgo and JAS have both played nearly the whole test season (except the 2nd half in Cape Town for JAS) so a good move

Good to have Pietsch back starting ahead of time

Tupou also rested after nursing a foot injury over last two months and possibly AA after a back complaint

Robertson at THP is so dumb. Van Nek would be a better option IMO.

Edmed just has to feed the Centres if that's how it lines up. No BS mid field bombs, we don't catch them anyway. They then need to just tuck it and run over someone. Quick retain and go again, and make a bit of space for Toole and Pietsch.

Not the team or time to get crafty. Go out there be direct and crush the guy in front of you. If you are a good team, you put these ones away well before the 60min mark.

I trust the pack can get it done mostly because I don't believe in Japans ability to dominate but this backline doesn't look like one that would be good if it got behind. Not much creativity or freak about it which is the gift of Jorgo, Ikitau and JAS. It's very simple, very direct.

Play to the current sides strengths.

Pietsch is our first choice winger. Gordon has been first choice as well.

Kellaway has near 50 test caps. Daugunu has been really impressive in all his appearances, I feel like he's been quietly underrated.

But yeah, can easily unravel.

I think it will be

9 - Gordon/Lonergan
10 - Edmed
11 - Pietsch
12 - Paisami
13 - Daungunu
14 - Toole
15 - Kellaway

seems to be the case, which means the bench is what?

21 Lonergan / Gordon
22 Stewart (are they say Carter potentially won't play?)
23 Potter?

Paisami has played well enough at Wallaby level in the past to cause some concern, if he can resist the miracle offload.

If I was Eddie I'd be targeting his spot in the defensive line though
Well enough?

I also question why professional sportsmen, with sports scientists managing recovery, need rest despite having few weeks off. they only have another 5 games over 5 weeks?

You would think they would need a game to blow out the cobwebs

That's the reason

You'd find a lot of the rest is probably being recommended by the sports scientists when tracking things like Variable Heart Rate. They can see when players are struggling and more likely to get injured.

They might have only 5 games left but they've been in game mode since Feb with the Lions series adding more to the year. There would be a number of guys right now managing niggling injuries we aren't hearing about.

Injury risk increases with every consecutive match, especially if you have played a high or low number of matches already in the season, and the risk at test level is much higher than the levels below.

WR (World Rugby) research on this is the basis for the new player welfare guidelines
The new guidelines state that players should:

  • Play no more than 30 games in a single season or six consecutive match weeks
  • Have a dedicated 5 week off season break
  • Be entitled to minimum rest periods should they be selected for international fixtures of at least 1 week.
  • Across a year, have 12 weeks of non-contact time
  • Communicate thoroughly between Club & Country

The players resting this week are so they don't get injured over the next month
