The great thing about the 'coach mike', is that as fans we have grown tired of the same tiresome, respective cliches which are rattled off during press conferences by players and coaching staff alike.. That's why Nick Cummins has created such a stir this season, he is saying things outside the box.

Rugby Union in Australia does tend to be a bit more innovative when it comes to this type of thing, on-field half time interviews of the players during super rugby, the referee camera and now this.. At least they are getting some things right when it comes to engaging the viewer..

Now only if we had some decent commentators .. Ray Warren is the benchmark when it comes to commentating in either rugby codes, rugby union needs someone like him.. A lot of the rugby union commentators are dreary and do nothing to enhance the experience.

Have been watching a lot of NBA lately, and not only are the coaches miked but some of the players as well. You get a brief highlight package of what they have been saying at stoppages, it's fantastic.

Not sure rugby players would go for it though, it's a bit more hostile on a rugby field than a basketball court, and I imagine plenty of stuff gets said that you wouldn't want out there. Even with a producer overseeing things, there would be too much risk of a leak or mishap for the players to consent I reckon.

Let's mike up Van Humphrey for commentary. Minimal risk there.

Haven't watched or listened to League since the mid-90s. That's nearly twenty years Rabbits free and am I enjoying it!! Can only suppose you are being faceteous/sarcastic/ironic?;)

Good on Link for doing that, even if the sensitive stuff won't be getting broadcasted I wouldn't like some Fox producer hearing everything I say.

I got to say I don't really like the coaches and players being mic'd up in all sports these days. I often find they give nothing of value since all the valuable info is sensitive. Especially in half time interviews it's all clichés. The interviewing of players as they're coming off the pitch where they're clearly heavily fatigued is a total joke.

I reckon Ray Warren is the benchmark in hyperbolic shouty description of a game. I won't go so far as to say it's a style of commentary I like.
That said, I agree with @TOCC that many of the rugby comms add little to the experience.

Ok, only a few hours to go and I'm getting excited. Off to the ground now, with a quick stopover for beer. Hoping the wallabies build on from last week and have a good game. Will be a much harder task and will be good to see them step up another level.

Quentin Hull (ABC radio Grandstand) is excellent at every sport he calls. Also has knowledge of Rugby players that "Rabbits" Warren doesn't!

BTW, Rabbits played First Grade League for the 'Quirindi Grasshoppers'. I bet you didn't know that, Mr Jarse!!

Just watched a promo for sports segment on Chn 10. Saw a bloke who towered over Izzey. "Shit, look at that big unit" I said to Mrs Doug! Then I thought that it must have been Will Skelton, who, (without Foxtel), I've never seen play before. A few checks with 'Google', revealed that I was right!

It may not be a high benchmark but the reality is that he is better then any of the Australian rugby commentators...

ABs ripe for the plucking this year.

Ripe are best picked, try plucking them & things may get a trifle messy.

Wobblies underdone after 3 semi-opposed training runs v les blahs, AB battle hardened after 3 last-ditch/ get out've jail wins v Ringinland, should be a cracker Bledisloe series, bring it on!
