Why is Moore captain? If leading from the front is a criteria for selection we don't need a niggly scrappy cheap shot merchant like him with the skipper's armband.

Like Dylan Hartley?

Hartley learned his lessons about being on the refs good side when he got Red Carded in the English Prem final in 2013. Accusing Barnes of being "a fucking cheat" isn't a good idea. Particularly when he repeatedly says, don't kick the ball out on the full, there will be time for a scrum, you deliberately get the kicker to put the ball out on the full, and then concede a scrum penalty directly in front on the 22.

Correct on both counts. Gits@10 is a terrible idea.

I don't think Cheika's overrated, I never rated him in the first place.
He's lost 8 out of his 19 games, with wins against America, Fiji & Uraguay.
Excluding them, he's got a 50% win rate against Tier 1 teams. When you look closely, it's a bleaker picture. Wales 2/2 (we haven't lost to them in a decade), England 1/4, Scotland 1/1, NZ 1/3, SA 1/1, Arg 2/2. Ire&Fra 0/1

He's being hailed the messaiah for beating England, Fiji, Wales, Scotland and Argentina at a WC. The reality is the Wallabies have lost just 3 games against Scotland, Fiji, Wales and Argentina combined in the past decade!

If you think about it, he's only had 3 performances to be proud of.
Two of those were in the meaningless Tri-Nations staged pre WC 2015, and the third was against England at the WC.

Woah woah woah, hang on a minute. Since MacQueen we've had a succession of coaches whose records aren't any better than Cheika's. Let's not forget that we've had losses against Scotland and Samoa in that time. Do we really need to do a breakdown of the coaching records from Eddie onwards? I think you'll find that there are skeletons in the closet all over the place there. Let's not forget that we beat three RWC semi finalists last year and got to the final, which is more than everyone bar the All Blacks did.

So if you've never rated Cheika, who would you propose coaches the team from this point onwards?

I've got to say that Hartley, over all of my doubts, has significantly cleaned up his act. Yes there was niggle, but he hasn't done anything brainlessly dirty in this series or the 6N that preceded it.

Yeah, and we were going so good before he took over......

I don't know what the answer is. I don't think the back row was a failure nor the fault, but maybe a more conventional set up with Palu and McCalman sharing a game at 8 would have been more effective.

And maybe that magical #10 is hiding away in subbies or in the country, does the ARU have a scout that looks beyond the Super rugby teams? I'm not suggesting you'd chuck the Walcha fly half in for the next test, but in terms of uncovering and developing the talent..

And those putting the slipper in to Cheika, who would be your choice for coach? Sure, this international season hasn't started well but his overall record is good. I'll concede he needs to come up with a less predictable game plan though. I reckon the England fans should still be reeling from the last RWC, they are a bloody good side and were poorly coached then. If not us they should have at least beaten Wales and advanced to the quarters.

Sam Greene is the flyhalf you're after.

Congratulations to England. I thought England were helped by the ref in game 1, but last night they definitely had the better of the Wallabies. Ford's kicking game was immaculate and very possibly the major difference between the sides.

AAMI Park is a disgrace, and cannot be allowed to host another test match until it is fixed up.

Where did the Wallabies lose it? I posted after last weeks' game that we needed a short kicking game to counter the rush defense. That was not in evidence last night, and is still a major deficiency in the Wallabies' and Foley's game. Phipps was especially slow and inaccurate last week, and even more so last night. His service put so much pressure on the rest of the backline that they had little capacity to do much against the rush defense.

Then, the backrow just did not work. Do I recall correctly that Cheika used a similar undersized back row on the 2014 EOYT, with the same result? Will he learn from this mistake? Having said that, Ben McCalman is not the answer at No 8. He came on last night fairly early and had absolutely no impact on the game. He just doesn't impose himself at all. Similarly, Mumm offers little in the way of impact when he comes on.

The talk is that we need a pilferer, and Gill has been mentioned. That might be an option, but not with Hooper also in the side. One or the other, not both together. I'd still be inclined to give Houston a go as he is about the only option that would bring a more combative presence likely to be able to impose some authority in the forwards.

The starting front row worked ok, but Kepu was surprisingly quiet in open play. The replacement props added nothing to the side. Neither Smith nor Holmes brought any go forward to the forwards, and neither was better scrummaging than the player they replaced.

Robshaw should have been YCed for his neck roll, and I hope he is cited. Foley did alter his line to interfere with Farrell and the penalty against him was probably correct. Kuridrani then did almost the exact same thing a phase or two later and was lucky not also to be penalised.

Of the others, Kerevi and Folau were stand outs; DHP very good at times but unaccountably fumbled the ball on a couple of occasions; Fardy was out on his feet at the end and coughed up a couple of loose balls, but otherwise had a strong game. Neither Moore nor Hooper are covering themselves in glory in the role of Captain.

A lot to be improved on. Have to wait now to see if both coaches and players have the wherewithall to do that.

Even after calming down from last night, I can't believe these guys are highly paid professional players. The skills displayed by players in the amateur era are far superior to those of these professionals.
1. Phipps is so poor at his basic skills, can't believe he is an international half when he doesn't even posses the basic requirement of an accurate pass.
2. Foley can't kick for touch, can't create diddly squat, can't kick goals reliably, has a poor passing game and is somehow an international 10. If he needs a 2nd playmaker outside him to be effective, then he is a passenger in the team. The reason we didn take the shits at goal is because the captain/team have no trust in him to kick the bloody goals.
3. We have a 15 who can't kick, and as such we end up being pinned deep in our half cause he can't kick us out of it. Then once pinned, our 10 can't kick us out either so in the end we concede stupid penalties to relieve the pressure as 3 points are better than 7.
4. We have a 7 who plays so wide so much we end up having no presence at the breakdown after a few phases both in attack and defence.
5. We have a tight 5 who seem totally incapable of showing any controlled aggression and confuse aggression with dirty niggle.
6. Time to try new combinations. Frisby and lilo at 9/10, Kerevi and Folau at 12/13, move DHP to 15, start Morahan at 14 and pick Hooper at 11 since he plays there most of the time.
7. No wonder Cheika wants Quade back, he would have unleashed our backline last night with that amount of possession and forward momentum.

I liked DHP's eagerness to get involved. He really roved and kept trying things and was largely effective. He did make some mistakes but at least he was trying things.

Horne on the other hand, a team leader, was largely anonymous and barely sited off his wing.

But that would have required a change from the game plan.
Still cranky. Still wondering why Foley didn't bring Horne infield for a inside pass next to the breakdown so as to fix the English defence close to the rucks and mauls.
No chance of that, nor mid-field pick and drive, if the only strategy is side-to-side.

This. Digby when he was playing with the reds was always on Quade's inside shoulder ready to take a pop pass. We need to get a winger who always hangs off Foley's inside shoulder ready for a little inside ball. But the damn gameplan has the wingers bugger off to be with the seagulls and just spin it wide all the time. This may work in Rugby Challenge but it doesn't in real life.

Is there an award for making the 1,000th post on this thread? Also, is this the most posted-on match thread in G&GR history?

EDIT: it's not even close, v Eng @ RWC got 2,033.
