Keep Baxter away from a test jersey, weve seen it for years, he performs well at super level but as soon as he faces some credible scrums at test level he fails.. He has had more then enough opportunity to display his ability and didnt take it to the next level.
I'd suggest Andrew Sheridan has a different opinion of Baxter.

I'd suggest Andrew Sheridan has a different opinion of Baxter.

The same Andy Sheridan who man-shamed Baxter and then Dunning in the same match in November 2005 when the Australian scrum capitulated and went to uncontested, or the Andy Sheridan who was MOM in the 2007 QF against Australian when he once again the australian scrum, and Al Baxter a lesson when he eventually made it off the bench.

Please Crow, dont for a second think that one scrummagin match acquits Baxters scrummagin prowess.. Sheridan is the biggest myth in Australia, we are unfortunately the only team he has actually performed well against and he isnt even rated very highly be other 6nation teams.

TOCC you're well in your opinion to tarnish Baxter at International level but I suggest you have a think about the other options. Slipper was heavily penalised too, as is Alexander.

You don't think it's in our best interests to have the most experienced prop come the big games? Someone who has played at this level over 70 times and is able to adapt to a penalty situation? There are very fair points about his past but imo he's in the form of his career and different player to a few years back. I think he deserves another chance, I can't see Slipper doing a better job.

qwerty you come off as very very anti James Slipper, he isn't as bad as you make him out to be. He is clearly the 3rd best prop in the country

I think the fact that he has 70 caps and even when he was in the 50-70 cap range our scrum was still striving for parity is evidence enough that if someone just doesnt have the ability, then no amount of caps is going to bring it through..

Im sorry, but he has played in 2 RWC's, both times our scrum were our archilles heel, he has had his opportunity.

Definitely not anti-Slipper, he's going to be very good in a few years and I'd have him in the 22. However, I would have Baxter and Kepu ahead of him at TH.

TOCC.. you're just being childish now. I'm trying to have a legitimate discussion. This has nothing to do with the Reds or anything.

Baxters 69 tests has always riled me. He came into the side only because every other TH prop in the country broke himself and stayed because Eddie Jones was a spanner short of a toolbox when it came to forwards. Anyone who thinks his first 49 tests were up to international standard is off with the pixies and a few after his 50th weren't too flash either. Yes he looks pretty good for the Tahs but he does have 2 exceptional frontrowers packing down with him.

Like i said earlier, Kepu, Robinson and Slipper should be the first 3 props chosen, after that its a bit of a guessing game.

Are we not talking about Wallaby ratings?

Put your game face on QWERTY, your slipping!

What's this crap?

This may surprise you, but a good scrum is not the sole domain of props. It would have assisted Baxter if he had a lock who actually pushed or an openside flanker who didn't practically detach upon hearing "engage". Slipper categorically is not better than Baxter at the moment, nor does he have the breadth of experience 70 odd caps bring.

Slipper may turn into an excellent prop, but he isn't one yet. Against quality looseheads this year he has always come off second best and that is only at Super Rugby level.

Dan Vickerman the best lock ever would have been behind him for a lot of those caps.

On stats readily available to me (against New Zealand) Baxter was paired with Sharpe more than Vickerman. In Vickerman's best year (2006) the starting THP was either Blake or Shepherdson.

I have no stats to prove it I just always thought that if they were in the same team Sharpe was the 4 and Vickerman was the 5.

Keep in mind some websites usually mix it up and name the #4 as #5 and vice versa (they do the same with wingers)... the only real way to know is to be at the game or watch it live.

EXAMPLE: For the 1st baabaas game V england, the ARU site had Lachie Turner at 11 and Nick Cummins at 14, however they ran out with Turner in 14 and Cummins in 11.

Would you agree if Sharpe and Vickerman were in the same side the Vickerman would play tighthead lock?

These days, for sure. In the past, I think some misbegotten fool of a coach got it the wrong way round.

My thoughts exactly.
