2009 was full of injuries, youngsters debuting, Older players finding form, Positioning switches/experiments, So considering everyone being fit for next year whats your wallabies team and why?

Heres my team:
1. Benn Robinson -If anyone else gets picked here besides big ben they need to be shot
2. Tatafu Polota-Nau - Love his big hits, Solid everywhere else just has to get his throwing right
3. Ben Alexander - Will have to have a good super 14 season tho, think we have some quality props out there.
4. Dean Mumm - Horwill hasnt given me much, Mumm is getting better and is showing he's hungry for games!
5. Nathan Sharpe - His line-out work and experience is key
6. Rocky Elsom - Not really any other candidates who can match rocky, But still hoping he will get back too top form n take more control as captain.
7. Pocock / Smith - Its going to have to come down to their super 14 performance to pick between them.
8. Palu - IMO was one of the best players of the spring tour, when he's at his best he's world class

9. Will Genia - Solid player, do think he's overrated though, no-where near gregan's level yet. But Solid.
10. Berrick Barnes - Also very solid, doesnt have the larkham flair (or cooper flair for that matter) and never will. But is solid and consistant. Our best tactical kicker which has been a problem for us lately. Will make the right decision (only thing missing is that "x" factor that creates gaps n wins games, but imo wallabies need stability n consistency which berrick has. If he's not injured)
11. Digby Ioane - Dont think he should be 13 cos AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is better at it. Had a few missed tackles in the spring tour. Think he's a good tackler but maybe his reading of play is a bit off. At wing he'll go looking for work plus adds a bit of power out wide.
12. Matt Giteau - IMO Plays his best at 12. We've debated this topic over and over so no need to argue about it anymore
13. Adam Ashley-Cooper - Also believe he plays his best at 13. And i also believe he could be one of the best 13's we've had, IMO he is the only person who has the potential to match one of the all time great wallabies (mortlock). AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) will always get over the advantage line, he runs good lines (try vs boks in 3N), and he is a bloody good defender. And put on some bloody good hits. His best assets are underused at 15. 15 makes him look like an average player when he clearly is more then that.
14. Mitchell - Can be used as a second fullback, skill-full all round. Bit tentative at times but im sure he'll be over that by now
15. Cameron Shepard - I think he's the only specialised fullback Oz has at the moment.

Run on reserves:
16. Stephen Moore
17. Sekope Kepu - This one will surely come down to the super 14 form.
18. James Horwill
19. Smith / Pocock
20. Richard Kingi - Lets just say i have high hopes for the guy
21. Quade Cooper - Can cover 10.12
22. Kurtley Beale - Can cover 10. 12. 15. and Wing!

I dont know how you can look past Peter Hynes when selecting any team, not the greatest finisher, but the work he does off the ball is amazing

Pretty good selection Seb. I thought Horwill was excellent on the EOYT so Sharpe and Horwill for me at lock. Would also have Hynes over Mitchell.

I am going to be bold and predict Quade or Beale (or ...To'omua) to trump Barnes in 2010  (If Quade gets through his current problem).

I reckon Toomoua will overtake Kurtley as a inside back. But I don't know if Kurtley will really cut it, and as for Cooper who knows what will happen to him.

That'd do me, Disco. I hope Shepherd comes back strong in 2010. Some 15 options would be great.

unless shepard has had the recovery off a lifetime, i think he is going to be to slow at international level, he had already slowed down a bit, between him and gerrard i always thought mark was the better player, another leg/ankle injury cant be good for him. hopefully he proves me wrong cos we need a fullback and i would prefer AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) at 13 but the last couple of years have been tough on him and i dont really see him ever getting back to full form.

I also dont think Shepherd will be able to perform at the international level again, the man is a walking casualty ward, i reckon the only reason he hasnt retired to Europe yet is because he wouldnt be able to endure playing anymore then 13games a year(even thats a rare feat)

I don't know why everyone is writing off Cameron Shepherd just go and watch Brumbies v Force 2009 where he skipped around AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) & Mortlock in the 1st half & then blew away Mark Gerrard in the 2nd half & that was after his leg injury hadn't healed correctly.

yep, I'm a Shepherd believer too. Or hoper at least. My team:

15 Cameron Shepherd
14 Drew Mitchell
13 Adam Ashley-Cooper
12 Matt Giteau
11 Digby Ione
10 Berrick Barnes
9 Will Genia
8 Wycliffe Palu
7 David Pocock
6 Rocky Elsom
5 James Horwill
4 Tom Hockings
3 Ben Alexander
2 Stephen Moore
1 Benn Robinson

16 Tatafu Polota-Nau
17 Sekope Kepu
18 Dean Mumm
19 George Smith
20 Josh Valentine
21 Rob Horne
22 James O'Connor

I guess the talking points would be:

- Tom Hockings at lock. This will have to come from a massive year. But I like the cut of his jib (gib?)
- Mitchell over Hynes for the wing spot because I think Mitchell is more likely to score a try from his own try line, which is a quality I like in my wingers. I think he finishers a try better as well.
- the back reserves. Valentine because I think he is as close to Genia as we have, and I like that style. Quality delivery, the odd snipe, very good kicking game.
- Horne on potential alone at this stage, but he could end up in the 13 jersey with AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) on the wing for Drew (or Drew to 15 for Shep).
- JOC (James O'Connor). He's there as the match breaker.

Yep big fan of Hockings I thought he was brilliant in 2008 real raw bone style lock, good around the paddock & good in the lineouts.

Fingers crossed he stay's injury free.

If anyone doubts his potential just find some footage of 2008 Western Force roadtrip to SA & NZ he was brilliant.

How Mortlock goes in his return will decide the 13 spot, and the fullback spot is definitely up in the air. With Barnes at 10 for the Tahs. Beale might spend more time at 15 and could develop into a good 15. The Brumbies also could be converting a 5/8 to fullback. I don't know who the Reds have in line for fullback so that leaves Shepard as the only expert fullback. So its going to be one interesting Super 14 to see how it all pans out.

Agree about Mitchell, but the flip side is that he is also likely to let in a try. Probably a horses for courses selection there.

I don't think it's likely that Git's will be moving to 12. If it was going to happen it would have happened during the Tri-Nations. I think we'll see;

15 AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)
14 Drew Mitchell
13 Ioane
12 Barnes (Cooper if/when Barnes gets injured)
11 Hynes
10 Gits
9 Genia
8 Palu
7 Smith
6 Elsom
5 Horwill
4 Mumm/Hocking
3 Alexander
2 Moore
1 Robinson

16 Polota-Nau
17 Kepu
18 Mumm/Hocking
19 Pocock
20 Burgess/Lucas
21 Cooper/To'omua/Horne
22 O'Connor/Beale

1. Robinson
2. Moore
3. Alexander
4. Horwill
5. Sharpe
6. Elsom
7. Pocock
8. Palu
9. Genia
10. Barnes
11. Hynes
12. Giteau
13. Mortlock
14. Ioane
15. Ashley-Cooper

16. TPN
17. Kepu
18. Mumm
19. Smith
20. Kingi / Lucas / Valentine - have to see Super 14 form
21. Mitchell
22. O'Connor

I'm hoping Barnes stays fit and has a good Super 14 at #10 which convinces Deans to move Gits.

I'm also hoping for Mortlock to make it back as he makes a huge difference.

O'Connor should develop further in the Super 14 and can be a match winner coming off the bench.

Reserve halfback - big area of uncertainty for Wallabies. Need someone to step up behind Genia. I don't think we'll see Burgess in Wallaby colours next year unless he really gets his game together.

I like idle speculation but this is very early. As the S14 goes on we shall probably see season-ending injuries to at least one of the top dozen forwards and perhaps two backs. What if Cliffy snoozes through the winter? What if Morty gives it away? Just too many variables.
Good point. Injury will cruel a few and there will be a bolter or two as the season unfolds. Actually, could be a good thread, "who will the bolters be in 2010"?
