For a while, Mortlock was Brumbies captain while Gregan was Wallabies captain.

Indeed and worked well. But both were leaders at the time..

George Smith actually captained the Brumbies a fair bit in later years with Mortlock and Hoiles often being invisible captains...

I have it in mind that George captained the Brumbies in his last match before going overseas the first time. I could definitely be wrong, but that's my recollection. I think he had captained the Wallabies once or twice before that.
