Wallabies 2025

He's definitely in my squad. Just not sure we can fit 2 no.7s in the 23.... unless your going with a 6/2 bench. On that point, If hypothetically you were going to go with Tom Lynagh to start and Donaldson on the bench. You might be able to get away with 6/2 split on the basis that Donaldson can play in the outside backs and Daungunu can back up centre. pretty risky though

The only way we can win is to take some risks.

you might be right. But from memory (which could be wrong) Robbie Deans went with a 6/2 split in the first test in the last lions series and we lost a couple backs in the first half and I think Hooper ended up having to play centre and it kinda fucked us... it's a bit of a role of the dice for sure.

EDIT: just checked - yes i looks like Deans selected Liam Gill on the bench

It was worse. We have a standard 5/3 bench. Leali'ifano got knocked out in the first minute and Pat McCabe came on.

Berrick Barnes got injured and left the field just before half time and Beale came on.

Pat McCabe then got injured early in the second half and Liam Gill replaced him (and Hooper moved to the backline).

Nah it was a 5/3 bench. We just had that many injuries that hooper had to go into the centres.

Leleafano lasted a minute, and then McCabe and Barnes were injured (plus IF was on debut and couldn't play anywhere except wing at that point)

I see yes - well you can see how fucked we would have been if we'd gone with a 6/2. That was extremely unlucky though

Has schmidt ever gone with a 6/2 bench?

EJ (Eddie Jones) used it in the loss against Argentina in 2023. Ikitau got injured and Carter Gordon had to play in the centres, and QC (Quade Cooper) had to play the full match, which wouldn't have been the plan, and then he gave up that tired high tackle late to lose the match

Surely there's no chance that Schmidt is picking Kellaway ahead of Potter. For me he's been the most consistent winger from the aussie side.
I’m reluctant to support this.

Early in the season I was bullish on both Pietsch and Jorgenson right up to the point where they de-railed.

But yes - his form has been quite outstanding.

We could do far worse than a bench with Salakaia-Loto or Skelton plus Uru/Hooper and Gleeson.

In line with the Springboks bomb squad concept it feels to me like you can get more upside out of tactical replacements by getting the tight forwards to empty the tank and then replace them and leaving 2 backrowers to play 80 minutes (in the 6/2 split).

Sure - and if your bring Skelton or if your bringing Salakaia-Loto & Tupou on for the back end I think Hooper or Uru could easily slot into the row but it also means your covered if Wilson or even McReight go down (assume Schmidt would continue to use Gleeson as a like for like sledgehammer for Valetini).

I don't think either Uru or Hooper are strong enough as locks for us to go into a test planning on playing them there (I though much the same about Fardy). They're great as cover in the event of injury or needing a player to slot in in the event of a card. That makes them really good back row cover in a 5-3 bench because that flexibility is much more important when you have one less forward.

If the plan is 6-2 and you're going to swap the locks, then you pick 2 locks and maybe one of them is 6 cover (Williams is great for this). Your final backrow reserve would then be for your back row player least able to go 80 (or most relied upon for heavy impact) which in our case is Valetini, and you're probably looking at Gleeson first on this years form. Hooper and Uru come into as jumpers if it's felt we need more lineout strength when we sub in this setup because someone like Skelton is coming on.

Depends if Schmidt is going entirely of form or players who have been consistently good in the past. Kellaway has definetly proven himselft and is a very good rugby player who deserves Wallabies selection. I do think potter will find himself in the 23 as he has been red hot during super rugby and deserves his wallabies shot.

Hmm As a Tigers fan it's a natural progression for a coach with 7 years coaching experience really.
Some point the unproven has to be given a chance to be proven

Big plus point for him is he has 14 years in the premiership so knows what's needed for the league.
