Wallabies 2025

The Ghost of Raelene

Rod McCall (65)
Edmed going to the Brums means he will be the Wallabies 10 by the WC. He'll look comfortable in a stable side and we'll all think maybe he's made a leap. To which he will have not.

I'm really wondering how the unknowns around 10 effects the rest of the side. It would be a lot more stable in camp than here but have you ever been in a team where you think "i dn about him" confidence takes a hit but when there is a genuine gun in a spot everyone lifts from it. That's where the likes of Foley and even QC (Quade Cooper) if he was still in competition mode would be effective. You see the old head who's been there done that come in and take charge and you settle into your role.

I think JOC (James O'Connor) makes sense to bring in mainly as a guy that has worked with a lot of the reds and Lynagh in particular.

nonsense. That's not what I meant and you know it. grow up
Do I? Or should you just be more careful with how your frame your messages considering the context of why he's no longer in the the team and how several of us apparently "wished" for it.

Hmm I’d be tempted to leave donno on the bench for his ability to cover 15.
Fuck it we’re probably gonna lose now so I’d throw lynagh in there to start. He’s 22, but what a storyline to drive up interest. And I know exactly what I’m gonna get from him. Basic backline organisation, a long boot (accurate too, can’t recall the last time he put a ball dead when going for a lineout) and he’ll kick his goals. He’ll be brave in defence (probably need to hide him at the back) and he’ll be a HIA watch when he’s out there.
Yeah I'd have no problem with Lynagh getting the nod. Biggest problem is his health. Is he currently fit to play?

Pure speculation here:

But this time last year the mail out of WobCamp was Lynagh may have been feigning injury (never actually said but heavily implied by JS) and now we have a finger injury that won't heal.

The most likely answer is he's just injured - but makes you think is there a confidence problem there?

Yeah Doran was mentioning this thought quite a bit last year with the hamstring issue that they couldn't diagnose supposedly

I think Donno is more ready for this moment to be honestly

Porecki was Wallaby captain? The therapy must be working because I've completely scrubbed that and the entire 2023 RWC from my memory.

Could be well enough to technically play, but not well enough to feel like he can execute confidently at a level that will impress. No one else has really grabbed the flyhalf role by the neck so he might feel he has time on his side.

In some lighter news, Tom Wright absolutely smoked Super Rugby, even if people thought it was one of his quiter years

Hmm it was around his hammies. He seemed spooked because he was getting tightness. I think he’s been right to go because he’s been doing opposing training at the wallabies. But I reckon he’d just had Noah and donno ahead of him.

I'd be bringing both Edmed and O'Connor in to be honest. I don't have much faith in Edmed as ready for test rugby but he does have that exposure and some combination with Gordon (though they've always looked an unnatural pairing to me). While O'Connor has less exposure to the squad (though he has been in fairly regular contact with Schmidt as far as I'm aware) he has a solid existing combination with Tate who he'd most likely partner form the bench. More importantly he is an experienced head to have around the squad to help what is otherwise a young and inexperienced crop.

It sounds like it's a larger squad, so it makes sense to use one of the extra spaces in what is now a problem position, particularly with O'Connor capable of filling in just about anywhere in the back line, at least in training.
What's JOC (James O'Connor) kicking stats over the last year or two? One thing Lolesio was impressing me with in the Fiji game was how clean his off the tee kicking was. Donaldson started the Super Rugby season looking much improved in this area but JOC (James O'Connor) has always looked a bit hit and miss for me after he had all those foot/ankle issues a couple of years back.

I really cannot see JOC (James O'Connor) (James O'Connor) starting against the Loins. Donaldson is the safest option. Lynagh on the bench.
JOC (James O'Connor) to start is absolutely zero chance. Joe will stick with Donno, Lynagh and Edmed in that order. That's who he's been backing and I'm pretty confident that's exacfly who he will pick. The only other possibility is Foley as a mentor in squad but don't see it happening. Brumby Runner, although I think Meredith is handy I think you are dreaming if you think Joe would call him into the Wallabies after one game against the Lions.
