Wallabies 2024

Also re potential future coaches...I wouldn't mind McKellar, really like the bloke and rate him highly as a coach. Would prefer Bernie has a bit more time in the saddle as a HC before going to the top job.

But also, surely Rugby Australia could be a bit more imaginative and think a bit outside the box. There is a world of coaches out there, surely the only candidates don't have to just be Antipodeans. I will beat the ROG drum till its broken. He is a marvellous coach and would understand the scope of the job brilliantly. Has spent time working in Super Rugby, found success everywhere he's gone and is spoken about incredibly highly.

The Irish have taken our prominent rugby brains shunned from our system...let's take theirs.

If we keep going this way, the Wallabies wont be making any money as they continue to sink

It's not an easy solution, granted, but this attitude of "it is what is it" just baffles me. If we keep the status quo we are doomed
I never said it is what it is... but unless we go in debt and or get money..how you doing it..

I think it needs to change somehow.. dunno how

we need someone making enough money and some control over cost. Note that the Wallabies are a key contributor to rugby funds but not a sole contributor. Broadcast revenue has been limited by having enough content. It would also contribute to have better capture which can be targeted.

Savings comes from thinking through actually how much the Wallabies and top up fees require given current results. Purchasing League players is mostly, but not I suspect wholly, funded by third parties. So savings are available through redirecting to pathways.

Running a domestic comp still has travel costs but would they be greater overall than Super with its international element?

Finalky the BIL and RWC are a gimme, what we need rational around is how to spend it. My answer is invest.
All valid... we target a centralised high performance let's get that going... then when there's trust move on to the rest.. The Brumbies rightly so with talk of merging with Melbourne or going to 4 teams don't want to give up there licensed.

Will see.

Random question is it true that kiwi teams have a higher salary cap then Australian teams ?

Let's not fixate on one head coach, it's clear the best national programs have more than one good brain. I agree Bernie needs more experience, but if he was supported by an experienced person either as a senior assistant or DoR, he'd be fine. He's been a national assistant, head coach in Australia and overseas, he's got to be getting close to the required level of experience.

NZ teams don't have a salary cap per se due to central contracting & other, less significant factors such as third-party payments, instead there are minimum & maximum salaries for individual players but I seriously doubt any NZ side exceeds the Aus team caps of (last I saw) A$5.5Mn, purely on the basis that total payments across the five franchises aren't even close to A$27.5Mn.

I remember reading somewhere that the Kiwi Super Rugby sides had roughly double the operating budget of the Aus Super Rugby sides, though.

Thought I might've kept the figures for future reference but it appears not.

Important to note that "budget" & "actual spend" aren't always the same: pretty much every Clan CEO ever has at various times observed that they under-spend on everything as they just can't raise what they're allowed to spend. Tribe & 'canes have been in the same position at times, albeit not as frequently as Clan.

Only Loss Bleus & CruSadists routinely raise & spend their allowance (which is on top of their NZR funding that covers salaries & some other fundamental costs).

I don't see mr 'average' gibbon, moving past a bench Slipper. It's a no from me.

Slipper is definitely not around for the next WC

We need to develop another LH to go with Bell

Gibbon was improved in Super Rugby this year and deserved to be in the WC squad ahead of Schoupp

Tough one I still think we missed a beat not taking Sio
Especially with Robertson injured
Think gibbon was first off rhe rank however scared off the coaches when he got demolished in SA
Hasn’t been there since
Schoupp is solid set piece but that’s about it
Maybe Robertson back in the future not a world beater but can hold his own
Lambert looks fit and solid
We missed AAA this rwc and tupou injured did not help at all

LR re Schoupp, isn't being good at the core skill what we have all been looking for? And he has shown good skill at forcing turnovers too.

Over the past couple of seasons, I reckon Tom Robertson had gone backwards. His best was around his last season with the Tahs but I wouldn't rate him for the Wallabies on his Force form even if he happened to be available.

Think the reserve Lhp is up for grabs have Slipper there as 5th prop till Lions.

Let's see if anyone pops up next year.

No problem with that, But why did he do it 24 hours before our biggest game since the 2015 WC final and try make it the centre of attention in the press conference and the talk afterwards, when it should be on the game, selections and issues we need to address
Exactly. He’s an A grade dic.head.

Yeah we should taken Sio this time around

Robertson I thought was playing some of his best rugby this year before injury he should have been there as well if fit especially being able to play both sides of the scrum
