Wallabies 2023

Except talk is that Rugby Australia is now planning to target NRL players. What a kick in the guts to players who stayed true and followed the pathway!! Seems like the answer to the question, “how do you get a million dollar Rugby Australia contract”, is GO TO THE NRL!!!

Couldn’t agree more!

Sign a player for $2m a season making him the highest paid rugby player in the world.

Ignore the fact he has never played a game of senior rugby only schoolboy.

Every other Wallabies or fringe player will know they are subsidising his salary. They will be off to Japan or France in a heartbeat. Why would they stick around and be disrespected by Rugby Australian like that.

At least there is one constant with the Directors of Rugby Australia, they can never read the room.

They think that by having some of these NRL ‘guns’ they will win a World Cup at home… ’private equity’ will save us !! Ha.

Is Gamble eligible?

I think one of the things that hurt us against england was not having a genuine jackal in the side. Hoopers never been an out and out 7, but in super rugby he was considerably less threatening at the breakdown compared to previous seasons. Im not sure whether thats the new norm or its connected to whatever burnout / MH issues he's been dealing with but it was definitely noticable. I thought Gamble was much more effective for the Tahs.

Sign him for 3 years to super and aru top up with sabbatical for up to two years in Japan provided he plays RC and one of spring tour and incoming fall tour.
He makes $1.5 or something first three years and then aru top him up $500k to
Play those tests and Panasonic or someone fronts him $1-1.5M a year.
Who is turning that down?
I think Blake Ferguson and his arrest for assault and cocaine in Japan has put a stop to signing league players.
The Japanese Clubs as is their culture value honour and respect. They won’t be signing anyone associated with the NRL for a long time if ever.
As the NEC Green Rockets said at the time Blake Ferguson brought great shame to the club and they were deeply embarrassed.

McReight is as good a poacher as there is going around.
No one’s saying to replace him. Just discussing if he were to get injured and Hooper isn’t available who we got. We have to play 5 Tests in a row on the EOYT, it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets rested from one of those too.

Dan Palmer - just hanging out in the lobby ….

Meanwhile, Brumbies scrum guru Dan Palmer is becoming more involved in the Wallabies’ coaching ranks.

While Brumbies coaches, including Stephen Larkham, joined the Wallabies’ camp for coaching development this week it’s believed Palmer, a former Wallabies front-rower, has spent the past two weeks with the national team.

The 33-year-old’s technical nous at the scrum has had some real cut through, with players believing his messaging is clear and empowers them with the required knowledge.

The Wallabies currently have Petrus du Plessis as their scrum coach, but Palmer is considered the best scrum coach in Australia and will have a more expanded role with the Brumbies next year.

Palmer will tour with Australia A later in the year.

See, they can do journalism.

I just read this press report, and the first question I had was...

Where are they going to get the fucking money to jag these leaguies to play union?! And who will suffer if they succeed?

Grassroots and community rugby for sure...

On one hand it would be great to see these guys playing our code, but why can't these muppets at Rugby Australia HQ come up with original decisions and a clear strategy to foster and grow the game?

O'Neill did this same tactic back in the early 2000's with Tuquiri, Sailor and Rogers - and they all eventually went back to League
A simple improvement would be to improve the coaching at the schools that still play rugby. At least then the kids coming out of school rugby would have the basics down pat and Super Rugby/Club could add to it. At the moment we are getting guys in the Wallaby squad who are weak in catching and passing, tackling effectively and safely (Petiaia) and also seem to know almost nothing about the rules.

I totally forgot about Liam Wright, wonder if he will be an option for next year. Could make a decent 6 with his line-out ability. I wouldn't mind having another forward with decent fetching in the starting team.
Assuming he has put on some weight and muscle. He is a smart player but last time I saw him he was too light for 6 and not as good as McCreight in 7. Will be interesting to see how he goes next Super Rugby season.

It's not as simple as that. It is unbelievably likely that a significant chunk of the money to sign someone like Sua'ali'i is going to come via a donation and subsequent payment from the Australian Rugby Foundation. This has been the case in the past where benefactors want to support the signing or retention of a particular player.

The money simply isn't there for someone else or to be spread around a group of players.

You mean they can't just take this 10 million and pump it into Subbies 3rd grade?

Is it really that simple to improve the coaching skills of 1000s of school teachers across the country?

So what do we do when Hooper comes back? Who plays off the bench? I would start McCreight every time and bring Hooper on from the bench. We need a quality poacher and we have been without a specialist one since Pocock.

Not so, the majority of good players come from a fairly small group of schools and the state rugby structure could find retired ex-rugby players to volunteer or pay expenses which would be better than a teacher with no idea running around because someone has to do it. They could upskill a coach who shows some promise and that is cheap.
Believe me I have seen it and it's embarrassing. Exception being Dave Dennis' father at a Western suburbs school.
Gives me the shits all this talk about great days for Aus rugby and buying leagues for a couple of million, when the school rugby system is rotting and disappearing fast.
