just checked and Carter was 22 in 2004 when he started at 10 replacing Carlos Spencer after the 2003 RWC.
BTW I am starting to agree re Petiaia.

I'm not sure what his U20's role has to do with anything? He was selected on the back of a very impressive year at flyhalf with the Brumbies in 2020 where he directly outplayed his Australian opponents, culminating in his MOTM performance in the grand final. His performance in the Brumbies win against the top of the table Chiefs over in NZ that year was pure quality...



Lolesio has been playing at 10 for years, at the Brumbies, the Canberra Vikings in the NRC, and the Tuggeranong Vikings in club rugby.

Well then the future for him at 10 looks a little bleak. It’s unlikely that he will get much faster or that his general vision of opportunity will improve dramatically. Those are the areas where he struggles.
He has done a very good job after being thrown in the deep end several times against the ABs and more recently England, but rather than swim he has just managed to stay afloat for the most part. Not through any lack of effort or ticker.

Larkham as HC at the Brumbies next year, he will have a pretty damn good mentor for how 10's should play. Not that I rate Larkham as a coach but Lealifano certainly improved as a 10 when Larkham was backs/attack coach at the Brums.

Mark Ella went close - age-wise he was there, but I guess he swapped around a bit with McLean.

I dont mean to be hard on him but its just difficult to tell where his ceiling will be. His attitude is great.

id have Perese but may not be fit, Foketi yes, JOC (James O'Connor) yes, Wright only if everyone else is injured. im not impressed with him at all in the Wallabies jumper but i'll accept that the times ive seen him play for the Brumbies he has been pretty good.

Was it Lolesio as Dan McKellar was his coach? Don't think Rennie has done a great job in developing our 10 stocks and he's got little support from our Super Rugby teams.

It seemed the All Blacks played a second 5/8 in those days, as opposed to an inside centre. It meant that a player like Carter could serve an apprenticeship outside a more experienced playmaker before becoming the key playmaker. Unfortunately the game has moved on from that style as it would benefit the young guys coming through for us now.

I don't think you're being hard on him. I think there is just something about Lolesio that doesn't scream a great 10, I think it is just a lack of any sign of leadership or game-management. He can run, kick, pass and follow a game-plan but he just doesn't seem to have a voice out there.

I fear he has really benefited from a very structured game-plan at the Brumbies and having White inside him taking most of the game-management away.

I hope I am wrong though, as he is still such a skillful and young player. Plenty of time to develop.

Quade had cemented his spot by then aha - actually without getting the topic off track, his 12th test was his first start at 10 and would go on to hold the seat down for the next few years

Desperate people do desperate things. The selectors obviously thought he was the best available option for the position. Neither Lolesio nor Vunivalu was in contention for the spot
