I don't think Hodge even makes the team, all players fit. Versatile 23 jersey goes to Beale.

Is popping up in the right place at the right time a strong enough asset to warrant test selection for Maddocks? Guys like Dane Coles and Ngani Laumape almost always pop up in the right place to finish a try but that is only one aspect of their game. I’m more interested in whether the 11 (assuming DHP is 15 and Folau 14) can be relied on to win a one on one in space 9/10 times.

Yeah I'm not suggesting that popping up in the right place is Maddocks' only quality, I'm suggesting that the absence of that ability should preclude other players.

I like a back three of Maddocks, DHP and Folau.

It has been reported that the Wallaby backline play was quite easy to predict. Relying on individuals to dominate collision for go forward. In that environment, you need at least 3 'strike runners' which maddocks is not. However if the attack was slightly more tactical/opportunistic, which is like the rebels atm, then a maddocks whose skill is popping up in the right place, would benefit.

Playing with Quade, put yourself in the right place and you'll get the ball, but you have to be paying attention. With current wallabies guided by Foley, you follow the system to the T and if done properly it will be you rewarded, if you don't fit the requirement or cross the T then too bad

Wouldn't Koroibete be a better 2011 era Digby Ioane foil to work with Quade than Maddocks?

I can't think of many examples of Koroibete letting us down; he doesn't have a weakness in his ability as a winger, and his strengths are in his finishing and his defence.

Harsh on Foley because he's looked fine (dud kick aside). QC (Quade Cooper) for the lols.

I don't think Jones is in particularly exceptional form but i like that he can cover 6 and lock. You could probably throw in Lukhan, although i havent seen much from him this year yet.

I think the front rows are largely inter-changeable and it doesnt matter who starts and finishes. Kepu will be in the squad as the 5th Prop. There really isnt much between Fainga'a and PA, unfortunately neither are exceptional. Latu is out of the reckoning. Can't see Rangi getting picked despite his decent form.

Bit of a cop out with the Hooper/Pocock selection. I can't pick it, just not both at once.

Hanigan is possibly controversial, he gets in over Dempsey because he can lineout good, which is a real weakness for the Wallabies once again. Another option at 6 is Samu, but again doesn't address the lineout sufficiently.

Don't rate Powell at all. Don't think Sorovi has done enough to justify selection yet. Phipps might slot straight back in, but i like Gordon more.

Our fullback options are, realistically, Folau and DHP. We should have a plan for what happens if they both go down, but we should also do whatever we can to never need that plan.

Kind of but you can't cover for every single contingency via the bench. If DHP and Folau were to both go down then you've probably also got Beale in the 23 and as a plan C, you can also put either of Quade and Foley up the back. We're talking about a contingency plan, not a tactic.

I don't even think it's bias; it lets him think of Hodge as broad injury cover with the ability to inject himself if a player is underperforming late in the game, and Rona as 11-13-14 specialist cover who can provide more of the same of what Maddocks and Kerevi offer. I was tossing up between saying he'll pick Hodge or Hunt more than I was wondering about the 23 jersey.

Rona was completely snubbed last year after Kuridrani showed him up.......... I doubt he'll get a look in unless he has a dominant season.

Been a while since we could afford to leave out so much talent.

It always does. We did get lucky in 2015 however to have most of our best players available.

I also think this injury will knock Petaia out of contention but it will be really tempting to include him in the Rugby Championship even with no more Super Rugby behind him. I think he's got the potential to be a real game breaker for us already.

At the same time, pushing an 18 year old into test rugby could easily wreck his body.
