Latham was a prodigious try scorer (even has a slightly better strike rate than Folau). Folau is right up there with our best ever in that regard and particularly in playing through an unsuccessful era, his ability to score relative to the rest of the team can't be written off.

Burke was certainly less so in terms of try scoring although he still managed 29 tries in 81 tests. He was a very complete player though and his goal kicking was generally outstanding.

I guess a relevant point would be that Folau is probably the only current or recent backline member who has any claim to being considered amongst our best ever in his position. Genia would be the next closest.

In the team as a whole, I think Sekope Kepu is well ahead of everyone else in terms of having a claim on the all time pecking order for their position.

yeah of course, absolutely subjective. If he'd played a career as a wing he could be close to Campo but he's played fullback mostly so we have to compare him with those.

I guess it's how you judge a player.

Statistically?

Folau's currently on 37 tries in 73 tests for a try every 1.97 tests. He's currently equal 3rd on the all time Wallaby try scorer list.
Latho scored 40 in 78 tests for a marginally better stat of 1.95. He's currently 2nd on the all time list
Burke score 29 tests in his 81 tests at 2.79 and is 11th on the all time list. But he's 2nd leading point scorer for the Wallabies and probably will be for some time as no one is really close to him.

Success?

Burkie is far and away here and, as you say, got to play with Larkham, Horan etc at their best. But he won World Cups, Bledisloes and Rugby Champs (and most other trophies).
Latho didn't really get to play with Horan (only a few) and played with Bernie and Gregan towards the end of their time. He didn't really win much either outside of the 2000 Rugby Champs and being a bit player v the Lions in 01.
Folau obviously hasn't had the same success by any means.

Skill-wise
Folau is special. His aerial skills are probably better than anyone who has played for the Wallabies. His evasive skills are excellent and likely up there with Campo. But after that????
Burke was the complete package wasn't he? Could've played 10 if he wanted (in fact may have a few times for the Tahs???) with an excellent boot, pass, vision, tackle, and beautifully calm under pressure.
Latho wasn't quite Burke in an all round game perspective but probably had the best punt for a fullback, perhaps up their with Gould? His pass was fine (at least way better than Folou) but his line/angle running and strength were superb.

I think the highlights reel of all three would be incredible to watch, but I think what's not in the highlights reel would stand the former two well above Izzy I'm afraid.

The thing is Reg, line up a blooper reel of Latho, you'd be entertained all night, not so with Burke. Burke was absolutely solid in all aspects.

I remember 4 years ago when the 'Giteau' Law was introduced someone on here said it was actually the 'Sekope Kepu' Law, as he was starting his O/S stint after the RWC, and that it was designed so that we could keep selecting him, not Giteau. That Giteau fell into it's criteria was possibly a deliberate consequence though.

There's a presser with Castle and Hore re Folau at 3pm. It's on rugby.com.au and Fox 500

EDIT: they have issued a statement that he's been issued a breach notice (high level) that results in termination of his contract, has 48 hours to accept the sanction (termination) or refer it to a code of conduct hearing. All that was expected of course.

What would be interesting is if Folau fought for a payout and pledged to donate it all to charity. RA would really be between a rock and a hard place there.

Why?

That would be ideal. If the ARU does get screwed out of its cashola, at least it goes somewhere decent.

Or you know, he could just donate some money to charity himself and not screw a cash strapped union for money they don't have.

ARU should say yep it's all going to charity then donate to an organisation that helps LGBTI youth like Minus19. Another quick Google shows there's even a charity that helps gay Christians reconcile their faith and their sexuality; fredom2b. That would ideal.

It looks bad for them if they fight against him to keep the money (even though they really need it).

I think he already donates about half his money to charity.

Folau's try scoring is well documented, but I wonder how many points we have conceded as a result of his inability to execute a decent clearing kick or position himself in defence.

He’s also saved us a hell of a lot of points from defusing bombs. He was a brilliant player, as much as I don’t agree with his beliefs, he will go down as one of the most talented wallabies of all time. Anything less isn’t doing his career justice.

The best judge of the sort of player he was, is that opposition fans constantly believed he was our best and most talented player to look out for when they played us.

let's say Tahs/Wallabies are 50-50 for $ on folau. Where does RA invest the soon to be released funds? Working to keep Genia? Quade? Foley? Pocock? or bring back some liek White, Gill, Skelton, Naiyaravoro

Let Pocock go, he seems to want to leave post world cup. Bring back McMahon for a backrow of McMahon, Hooper and Isi.

Lineouts will matter more than ever with Izzy out. Opposition teams will kick tactically and for the line, knowing that they have a great chance of winning or disrupting our ball.

Stem the flow of talent heading overseas.

Subdivide Folau’s million dollars and say Kerevi is on $500k offer him an extra $200k to stay around.

The squads are looking the best they have in years, let’s try and keep them together as much as possible, allow our young guys to grow with some experienced pros and get some positive results on the field. If that means offering 5-6-7 players a portion of that salary then split it up. Then work the squads to get unused talent into teams that need the. Eg. get Timu down to NSW before he’s completely lost, Korczyk somewhere he will actually play, Hardwick to a side that will play him each week, RHP, Cam Clarke, etc.
