After Lambie's excellent CC final I hope he gets a start byt Meyer will go with Steyn.
So, in a massive twist of irony, a Sharks supporter (me) thinks the Bulls flyhalf should start, and the Bulls supporter thinks the Sharks flyhalf should start.
Ok, I have never been a huge Morne Steyn fan. Here is what I think he still does wrong:
He doesn't always read the game. He is very mechanical, and is prone to miss good attacking opportunities because of it. We've all seen him kick away ball as part of a mechanical plan when there was a 3 man overlap outside him. He also does not have deceptive hands. He still has these issues despite a lot of game time but a lot of it will be down to what Meyer picks him for, and so we come to his positives:
Pressure, pressure, and lack of mistakes. He makes very few mistakes. I can think of just a couple of occasions when he has dropped a ball, and he's had some shocking service from the 9s recently, picking up balls at his feet or over his head. He has huge experience and is able to get out of pressure situations calmly. This is invaluable in test rugby. His defence is not nearly as bad as people make out. I really don't notice him missing many tackles despite being targeted. He also exerts pressure on the opposition with very good field position kicks and good touch finders.
He has formed a good partnership with the midfield and they've played really well during the 4N. I think we have more talented options at 10 but test rugby is about making very few mistakes and getting the core stuff right. Steyn provides this, we just give up a few things in expense.
