Yeh it was great but if they got pinged when they were offside it would or sorted it out. Their line speed was amazing but still offside a handful of times.

So true, sometime I feel like as long as the whole line is offside you can do whatever you want.

Refs seem to only notice offsides by using others as reference points, and the entire Welsh line was offside a lot.

That's a poor point as I could easily say 'how many games have we lost because of his poor kicking?' I don't know the exact number bu it's certainly more then he has won us from his kicking that's for sure. It's really all about consistency and he's got to at least replicate this form next week against England if we have any hope of winning. Anyways, I don't want to get into some Foley bashing argument, he was solid enough. Let's hope it continues.

Yeh. It is a big part of the game now. The all blacks have been doing it for years but now all teams relaise how important that quick line off defence is.

Just before half time Genia twice kicked the ball back into a ruck because he wasn’t ready for it. Am I correct in my understanding that this is actually illegal?

The second time it may not have actually cleared the ruck, but I definitely thought the first one was.

You can keep the ball in the ruck with your feet, but once it's out you cant put it back in

Refs shouldn't have anything to do with offsides, other than whistling them. Offside play should be adjudicated by the TJ/ARs, exactly the same as in soccer. It's not difficult, stand on the offside line and call it, the players'll soon start to have a quick squiz where the bloke on the sideline's standing.

How does the TJ/AR know when the Ref thinks the ball is out of the ruck?

It would be infintely easier to ref than soccer. In soccer you need to be able to watch both the point where a pass is made and the offside line which is often completely different sides of the pitch. Rugby would be a piece of piss. The offside line is always right next to the ruck (within which is the ball).

I don't know mate, have you ever had a ref break down the different things he looks for in an average ruck/tackle contest? It's a quite a checklist and I imagine it's hard to police a bloke 3m behind you for offside while you do it.

In soccer what're you paying attention to? The one bloke that kicks the ball, and the one bloke furthest forward. 2 things really.

Right, which is why you have the AR doing the offside line as suggested above. The ref can focus on all the shenanigans going on in the ruck and the AR can focus on the offside line.

Outside of that I thought it was the best test he has played in a number of games and would have been well amongst my MOTM votes (probably 2nd behind Genia) if he hadn't been carded.
