MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY 10 def by 19 HARLEQUIN- HG Smith Oval, Parkville
Harlequin has continued their return to form with a tight win over Melbourne University, in a tough game of Rugby. Quins had struggled to reach the heights of 2013 so far this season, however look to be finding their feet as the march towards finals begins.
Quins were their own worst enemy during the match, with four players finding themselves sin binned throughout the afternoon. The Students, with wavering form and a number of injuries, are still yet to take down a top four side since their Round One victory Box Hill. For University Head Coach Jason Jones, losing to the reigning Premiers in a close battle was no consolation as crucial errors proved to be the difference for his side.
"Harlequin came out and tried to slow our expansive game down, and to their credit they did through the break down," Jones said. "Perhaps last year we would have been satisfied with the result, but this year the Clubs own expectations and base lining have changed considerably.
"Sam Jeffries again played a solid 80 minutes; his work and engine rate for such a big unit is very impressive, and he even brought out the chip kick. He has a very mature head on such young shoulders and is an absolute credit to the Rebels' organisation.
"Isa Halo had his best game for the Club by a fair margin. He is only a young man, in a very young back line, and is starting to find his niche. When he darts and breaches the line, we look a different side. Ant James was also outstanding after being a late call up on Friday night. Some players take being moved from the starting side or lower grades as a negative. Ant took the feedback he was given and worked hard to rectify and improve those areas of his game."
Melbourne University 10 Tries: Anthony James, George Stewart. Conversions: nil. Penalties: nil.
Harlequin 19 Tries: Pom Simona, Craig McGrath, Alex Rokobaro. Conversions: Lloyd Johansson. Penalties: nil
MOORABBIN 29 def 23 POWER HOUSE - Keys Road Reserve, Cheltenham
Power House put up a serious fight in a top against bottom clash, however weren't quite strong enough to serve the ladder leaders their first defeat of the season. The visitors' defence, which has been lacking all season, looked to be much improved against a solid attack.
The Rams, despite remaining undefeated, have been challenged in recent matches with a draw to Box Hill followed by narrow wins against Melbourne and Southern Districts. Moorabbin's Head Coach Ben Perenise is now looking forward to the team's Round Nine bye ahead of the second half of the season.
"Power House were very competitive at the breakdown, and not only slowed our ball but they managed to win a few turnovers. They were aggressive and stayed in the game for 80 minutes," Perenise said. "Too many errors in the first half and our inability to win and set a platform off set pieces created very little opportunities.
"Our best player of the day was young Alex Fowles who was solid and very mature in his work. His game has improved each week. Special mention to Patolo Toeta who at full back was solid on defence, making a few try-saving tackles. He is another one of our young players playing with a lot of maturity. The boys will be happy that the first round is over with a bye next week."
Moorabbin 29 Tries: Max Lahiff, Mana Faraimo, Machon Samu, Malo Young-Yen. Conversions: Neli Sasulu (4). Penalties: Neli Sasulu.
Power House 23 Tries: Sean Cressy (2). Conversions: Adam Millgate (2). Penalties: Adam Millgate (3).
SOUTHERN DISTRICTS 13 drew with 13 FOOTSCRAY - Riviera Park, Eels Race Road Seaford
With four sides sitting on a win apiece at the bottom of the ladder, this game posed the perfect opportunity for the Footscray or Southern Districts to break away from the lower group as the halfway point of the season approaches.
This however was not to be, as victory escaped both sides with a tough low scoring battle ending in a draw. It was an incredibly physical game according to Footscray Head Coach Nic Henderson, with Lopeti Timani impressing on his return from injury.
"It wasn't a game played to the high standards both teams would expect from one another, but still a hotly fought contest none the less," Henderson said. "Both teams applied plenty of pressure inside the opposition 22's, but great defence from both teams snuffed out most opportunities.
"Lopeti had a solid game in tight, with plenty of strong carries to get our team over the gain line in his first game back from injury. He will definitely get better each week as he regains much needed match fitness."
Southern Districts Head Coach Ross Sanders was pleased with his side's defence, with mistakes in attack letting the Pirates down.
"A staunch and hearty defensive effort kept us in the game for the majority however this only highlights our inability to acquire and retain possession," said Sanders. "We were pretty careless with some of the ball we got and this made it difficult to build pressure.
"Both Bradley Nicholson at seven and Sean Mehrtens at flyhalf were very busy in defence, whilst Heine McFarland at fullback and Gasa Tiatia in the midfield made the most of limited attacking opportunities."
Southern Districts 13 Tries: Jarrod Eberhart. Conversions: Heine McFarland. Penalties: Heine McFarland (2).
Footscray 13 Tries: Jonah Lolesio, Tupine Apineru. Conversions: nil. Penalties: Shane Imo
BOX HILL 51 def 19 ENDEAVOUR HILLS - Sparks Reserve, Middleborough Rod, Box Hill
Box Hill have continued their run of incredible form, with their scintillating attack handing Endeavour Hills a 32 point belting at home.
The Broncos have now scored almost 100 points more this season than any other side, with a percentage of 170 a testament to their fierce attacking style of Rugby. The addition of Rebel Angus Roberts at flyhalf provided additional spark to a dominant attacking side with two tries to his name.
Endeavour Hills Head Coach John Eden was left disappointed in his side, with his backline faltering under the Bronco's pressure.
"My forwards played very well. We dominated the break down and managed to turn the ball over pretty much at will," Eden Said. "Problems started when we turned the ball over in the backs or we missed a tackle in the backs. I think Box Hill scored at least five 70 metre-plus tries.
"My best players were our nineteen year old loose head prop, David Savea. He seems to be nearly best on ground week after week. Our new scrumhalf Jon Mokomoko, who has just arrived from New Zealand, has great direction and vision. He likes telling the forwards what to do and we need that."
Broncos' Head Coach Andrew Slyfield could again walk away pleased with his team's effort, however is still challenging the side to get better each week.
"We were very happy to come away from the game with the five points and get through the match injury free," said Slyfield. "Endeavour Hills played well and really tested us especially around the breakdown. The score line wasn't a true reflection of the game but more importantly the game highlighted areas we need to work on especially if we are going to be any real threat to the top teams in the competition this year. The whole team knows we have a lot of improvement to make.
"Number Eight Mo Haukinima again led well from the front and continues to have a massive impact in the game. He was well supported by Ratu Rokotunaceva who has moved to loosehead prop to allow young South African Greg Bauer to start at hooker. Greg had a strong game especially around the contact zone and was often needed to protect the loose ball."
Box Hill 51 Tries: Angus Roberts (2), Bill Seveti (2), Savenaca Waqalutu (2), Sefanaia Naivalu, Filipe Koroibola, Greg Bauer. Conversions: Sefanaia Naivalu (3). Penalties: nil.
Endeavour Hills 19 Tries: Ed Tiniselli, Rennie Malimeav. Conversions: Jon Mokomoko (2). Penalties: nil.

Some key match ups this weekend. Hopefully the weather holds out and we get some running rugby.

Everything you need to know ahead of Round 9 of the Dewar Shield
Round Nine of the Dewar Shield competition kicks off this weekend, with four big games in Victoria's premier local Club Rugby competition.
Endeavour Hills, Footscray, Southern Districts and Power House will all be desperate to secure their second victory of the season; with the bottom half of the table lagging a fair way behind the top, while unbeaten table toppers Moorabbin enjoy their first well-earned bye after an intensive eight game block.
Endeavour Hills (most recent result first) (LLLLL) v Footscray (DLBWL):
Last week, it looked as if Footscray may secure their second win for the year, however Southern Districts managed to hold on for a draw and now the Doggies must travel to face an Endeavour Hills team with their tail between their legs after conceding a half century of points for the second week in a row. You would think defeat will spell the end of any finals aspirations for either side here. Rebels lock Lopeti Timani turns out for Footscray, while Endeavour Hills will have to make do without Rebels prop Eddie Aholelei who is with the Tongan international team.
Endeavour Hills players to watch:
"Scrumhalf Jon Mokomoko is an exciting prospect. He gives us great leadership and direction around the breakdown, has good vision and his pass gets the backs on the front foot.
"David Savea has been my best or next best, all season. As a nineteen year old he is one of the most talented up and coming front rowers in Victoria. Always looking for work off the ball, David is a lot fitter this year and this shows in his work rate." (John Eden, Head Coach Endeavour Hills)
Footscray players to watch:
"Julius Schwalger has moved from centre to wing in recent weeks, after a number of wingers falling due to injury. He has proven himself an excellent defender and keen attacker. What I like most about Jules is his willingness to learn and improve, and whilst he has been playing out of position to help the team out, you wouldn't know it as his performances have been of such a high standard.
"Keis Yamad is not our biggest player by any measure, but definitely one of our most important. He adds a level of professionalism to the team that is sorely needed, and a great work ethic around the park. We will definitely need a big game from him this week to spark our attack in what will be a tough game." (Nic Henderson, Head Coach Footscray)
Harlequin (WWLBW) v Southern Districts (DLLWL):
Harlequins are coming off two straight wins, and the 2013 champions now sit in 4thplace on the table. With Fijian flyer Alex Rokobaro is good try-scoring form, the Pirates will have to step up their performance after a draw against Foostcray in Round Eight.
Harlequin players to watch:
"Loosehead prop Eugene Mulipola has been putting some good performances in as of late. His work at the set piece has been quite outstanding. Also, his work around the park has become better as his fitness improves. He has excellent hands for a big man and we look forward to seeing his game to continue to grow.
"Niko Lauina is the elder statesman of the side, and he has gone back to what he does best; putting his head down and working hard. He has taken over the lineout calling and is doing a good job of that as well. Niko's experience, and 'never take a backward step' attitude is invaluable for the team." (Craig McGrath, Harlequins Head Coach)
Southern Districts players to watch:
"Suka Fakahua got a mention only a few weeks ago as a player to watch. At that point of time he was competing for a starting position, training hard, being patient and making the most of each opportunity with limited game time. His last few games have by far been his best. A tall athletic winger with good balance, Suka has demonstrated both speed and power down the left flank on many occasions in recent weeks.
"Leatuolo Tuala has been a constant in the Pirates pack for the last three seasons. He prefers to play in the back row, but has found himself also at lock this season. Wherever he plays you can always be assured that he will give you 100%. 'Junior' loves to carry the ball and is always willing for the full 80 minutes. He's a proud and passionate player who is hurting as much as anyone with our lack of success thus far this season." (Ross Sanders, Southern Districts Head Coach)
Melbourne (BWLWW) v Box Hill (WBWDW):
The Unicorns return from the bye in what will be a classic match-up between second and third on the table. Rebel backrower Jordy Reid has been a huge contributor for Melbourne this year, and will see a familiar face in the opposition ranks with Angus Roberts to dictate terms for the Broncos backs. A huge clash, and a big test for Box Hill to see how far they have come, as they are undefeated since Round One.
Melbourne players to watch:
"James Slattery will play a big role with his decision making in midfield. Tim Emery has found a new lease of enthusiasm. The team will be looking to build on their disciplined performance against Power House in Round Seven." (Ellis Meachen, Melbourne Unicorns' Director of Rugby)
Box Hill players to watch:
"Greg Bauer has settled in well into the team since his arrival at the Club a month ago. Greg has an impressive Rugby CV, having played through the ranks with both the Pumas and Sharks (South Africa) age group teams and last year was picked in the Sharks Vodacom Cup squad. As a hooker he has a great throw and get himself around the field always being there to tidy up. He plays well in big games which we will need this week against Melbourne.
"Adam Lewis' pre-season was hampered by injury but to his credit he has worked really hard to get himself right which is paying off now. He is an athletic player, both as a jumper in the lineout and around the field. He is always looking for work whether it is making tackles, cleaning out or getting the ball to space. Adam also plays an important part in our leadership group on and off the field." (Andrew Slyfield, Box Hill Head Coach)
Power House (LLWLB) v Melbourne Uni (LWWLL)
Power House's season is hardly going to plan, and they have to face a Uni side desperate to return to the winners list and work their way into the top four. The fortunes of these two sides have gone in different directions from their 2013 form, and with Rebel lock Sam Jeffries continuing to play a major role for Uni it could be a long afternoon for House.
Power House players to watch:

Melbourne Uni players to watch:
"Mathew Onesemo's work rate and durability has been a revelation this year. I take him for granted in some ways, in the fact that he plays the full 80 minutes each week. That is an absolute credit to him and the work he has done over the last few years. I would love to push him into the back row in the coming years as he carries the ball so effectively and his breakdown technique is so accurate.
"Vaasila Leota, aka 'Silly, is a key part of our very youthful backline, and he has found a home on the wing. He has crazy fast feet, is absolutely tenacious in defence and plays way above his weight. Like our entire younger brigade, as they physically develop over the next couple of years, if we can keep this group together, it's scary of where this Club can be over this next cycle." (Jason Jones, Melbourne Uni Head Coach)

ENDEAVOUR HILLS 10 def by 31 FOOTSCRAY - Frog Hollow Reserve, David Collins Dve, Endeavour Hills
Footscray's chances of making a late run towards the top four have increased following a comprehensive win over Endeavour Hills. The Doggies have struggled to find form all season, but look to finally be finding their feet in the competition, while 'Hills have continued to falter, slumping to their seventh loss in row and the bottom of the ladder.
For Footscray Head Coach Nic Henderson, this was the perfect way to finish off the first half of the season, with his men now looking forward to more success in the rest of the year.
"It's always a tough trip out to Endeavour Hills and this time was no different," said Henderson. "The first forty minutes was a tight contest, and there were plenty of opportunities missed by both teams. Scrambling defence from both sides saved a number of try scoring opportunities.
"Some fantastic work by our halves pairing of Shane Imo and Kieran Kaa saw us consolidate field position in the second half, and from there we managed to score some points through sustained pressure. Flanker Calvin Ah Wong also played a great game and helped lift the side when needed."
Endeavour Hills 10 Tries: David Savea, Rennie Molimeau-Brown. Conversions: nil. Penalties: nil.
Footscray 31 Tries: SioSiua Ngauamo, Soane Naufahu, Ben Filipo, Matt Komiti. Conversions: Shane Imo (4). Penalties: Shane Imo
HARLEQUIN 36 def 15 STH DISTRICTS - Ashwood Reserve, Power Ave, Ashwood
Harlequin have continued their climb up the Dewar Shield ladder, jumping into third position after another solid win against a struggling Southern Districts side.
'Quins gave themselves an extra challenge, with two players yellow carded at the same time to the disappointment of Head Coach Craig McGrath.
"We played well in patches but we lost our way with two guys in the sin bin which was frustrating," explains McGrath. "OJ Noa was our man of the match; he had a big game with ball in hand and was dominant in the air. Kolo Mahe was also strong with ball in hand and around the fringes."
Pirates' Head Coach Ross Sanders credited errors from his players with the loss, as his side matched the reigning Premiers in a number of areas around the field.
"The forward contest was fierce with our boys really taking it up to Quins," said Ross. "Our set piece continues to improve, particularly our lineout with Dayne Hillier-Wilkinson really showing authority in the air. Two converted tries to Quins just before halftime really hurt us, particularly having spent the previous ten minutes pressuring the Quins line for no reward. Jarrod Eberhart continues to perform strongly at hooker, while Glen Salter made impact off the side of the scrum.
"We had enough of the ball and good field position to do better on the scoreboard but skills and poor execution let us down at crucial times."
Harlequin 36 Tries: Kolo Mahe, Sione Taufa, Rian Olivier, Justin Masters, Alex Rokobaro, Peter Luamanuvae. Conversions: Lloyd Johansson (3).
Southern Districts 15 Tries: Gasa Tia Tia, Heine McFarland. Conversions: Jarrod Dowie. Penalties: Heine McFarland.
MELBOURNE 32 def by 37 BOX HILL - Romanis Reserve, Orrong Rd, Prahran
It was second taking on third in the most anticipated match of Round Nine, with Box Hill continuing their dominance over the competition's best with a tight five point win over the Melbourne Unicorns.
Unicorns' Director of Coaching Ellis Meachen was again impressed with the work of his forward pack, however was let down by a series of mistakes from his men.
"It was a really entertaining game of Rugby," said Meachen. "We had some strong forward play from Daniel Corcoran, Atta Manu and Jordy Reid and a dominant lineout anchored by Dan Squire will serve us well moving forward.
"Box Hill launched a series of attacks which lead to crucial turnovers with Box Hill scoring field length tries on a number of occasions. We gave the ball away in the middle of the field many times and this led to the Broncos' players penetrating on mismatches."
Broncos' Head Coach Andrew Slyfield was again pleased with his teams attack, however was let down by his side in defence.
"We were expecting a tough physical game against Melbourne and that's what we got," said Slyfield. "They had obviously been working very hard at playing very direct in attack and were rewarded with plenty of success in that area. The boys will want to do their 32 hill sprints this week for letting all those points in, particularly the ones late in the game.
"On attack we made the most of our opportunities which was pleasing. Sefa Naivalu had another strong game, as well as the outside backs. Angus Roberts had a fantastic game and his 90 metre try was most probably the difference between the two teams in the end. Gus made a number of breaks and he guided us well around the field. Our bench was great on Saturday especially Greg Bauer who had actually been sick all week but gave us great impact. We were very happy to come away with the five points"

POWER HOUSE 22 def 17 MELBOURNE UNI - Albert Park, Lakeside Dve, Albert Park
Power House have picked themselves off the bottom of the ladder with a five point win over Melbourne University, a side whose finals aspirations have suffered a significant blow.
A win here was crucial for the Students to keep in touch with the top four, however inconsistency has let the side down and will make the road to finals even harder for Head Coach Jason Jones.
"It was a tight game where as usual we had several opportunities to close it out, but could not finish things off," said Jones. "We had several players missing late in the week with Sam Jeffries taking the week off, Fereti Sa'aga being selected to represent Samoa in the IRB Under 20 World Championships and Sam Richards suffering a back injury, but we were simply not good enough on the day and full credit to Power House for taking their opportunities. Ione Sefu had another strong game, and Steve Fualau showed incredible character after playing a few minutes of Friday night and then fronting up to play for us the next day.
"As the first half of the season concludes, we've already won as many games as we did all of last year; however it's still been disappointing to not find ourselves in a better position. In saying that, we have lost to Moorabbin by three and 'Quins by nine, and beaten Box Hill, so we are not far off the money. This young side just needs to learn how to close out these tight contests and improve our game management across the club. We are getting closer and one day this season it will click, and I think we can beat anyone if we do get it right."
Power House 22 Tries: Tom Gilbert, Isei Feloko, Ta'Riga Sa, Tom Cox. Conversions: Romeo Ah Fook. Penalties: nil
Melbourne University 17 Tries: Steve Fualau, Ryan O'Sullivan, Craig Cowely. Conversions: Ioane Sefo. Penalties: nil.

Footscray (most recent result first) (WDLBW) v Moorabbin (BWWWD)
The Doggies come up against a Moorabbin team who are undefeated after the first half of the competition, and coming off the luxury of a week off. It was a narrow victory for the Rams in Round One, winning 22-13 at home, and although they have won seven (and drawn one), none of those victories have been by more than ten points. Footscray will be buoyed by their second win of the season last week, when they convincingly dispatched Endeavour Hills. Max Lahiff will slot into the Rams' front row.
Footscray players to watch:
"Martin Naufahu, who completed the majority of a Rebels pre-season, returns this weekend for his first match with Footscray since breaking his leg in the trials. He will add another dimension to our midfield with his strong defence and running game.
"Allan Imo is the cornerstone of our front row and forward pack. Has been one of our most consistent performers and will need to be on top of his game this weekend coming up against a strong Moorabbin scrum." (Nic Henderson, Footscray Head Coach)
Moorabbin players to watch:
"Malo Young-Yen has been a regular starter this year on the wing. He had a slow start but is starting to find some form. Malo's strength has been his work rate and ability to read the game and make decisive decisions; his experience will be valuable away this week to Footscray.
"Our only Rebels player to play for us this season, Max Lahiff has impressed me with his attitude and willingness to be part of the team. His two performances this season have been stand outs. He brings all his experience and enthusiasm to the team environment and the players enjoy having him around. Footscray have a big forward pack and as they say in Rugby it starts up front. Max will be key for us going forward." (Ben Perenise, Moorabbin Head Coach)
Melbourne (LBWLW) v Harlequin (WWWLB)
The Unicorns were the latest side to fall victim to the Box Hill juggernaut last week, and they will be desperate to return to winning ways and find some consistency in their performances. It doesn't get any easier this week however, with Harlequin beginning to find the form that saw them defeat Melbourne in last season's Grand Final and win the Dewar Shield. Quins embarrassed Melbourne 41-12 in Round One, but you can bet the Unicorns will prove a tougher opponent on their home turf. Fijian flyer Alex Rokobaro lines up for Quins, and is in hot try-scoring form.
Melbourne players to watch:
"We need a strong forward this week. James Slattery had a strong game last week, and will be looking to build on that. Freddy Austin and Tim Emery will be hoping the backs make better use of quality ball this week." (Ellis Meachen, Melbourne Director of Rugby)
Harlequin players to watch:
"OJ Noa has been very prominent in the last three matches; his ability in the air and with ball in hand have been big features of his game. He's very quick for a big man and his repeated efforts have improved. I'm looking forward to seeing him against a very good Unicorns outfit.
"Big hooker Kolo Mahe has been under pressure to keep his spot in the starting line up, but responded with a very good performance on Saturday. His work with ball in hand and his physicality at the breakdown and around the fringes were outstanding." (Craig McGrath, Harlequin Head Coach)
Power House (WLLWL) v Endeavour Hills (LLLLL):
Power House players to watch:

Endeavour Hills players to watch:
"Outside centre Michael Tupai has been bought up from the reserves as his defence work this year has been outstanding. He works very hard in defence and has given us good options in attack.
"Number 8 Brandon Tauu is coming back from injury. He's a big unit who gives us great go forward, is a good ball carrier and has kept his fitness at a good level. I'm looking forward to him improving rapidly in the second round of the competition." (John Eden, Endeavour Hills Head Coach)
Melbourne Uni (LLWWL) v Box Hill (WWBWD):
This weekend will show if Melbourne Uni are really in the mix for finals, or if they are pretenders; that's in the words of their Head Coach, Jason Jones! Box Hill have been a revelation this year, and are playing some great expansive Rugby. Defence will be the key; Box Hill have the wheels out wide and any broken play will end in pain for Uni, so logic would dictate that they play them through the middle and their set piece. Either way, I think both Clubs play an expansive, attractive style of Rugby and it should be a great game to watch. Rebel teammates Sam Jeffries (lock, Melbourne Uni) and Angus Roberts (flyhalf, Box Hill) go head to head for the first time. Uni prop Fereti Sa'aga is unavailable as he is in New Zealand with the Samoa U20s for the IRB Junior World Championship.
Melbourne Uni players to watch:
"Craig Cowley continues to impress in his return to the Club. He is a class player who is defensively a rock at fullback, but we are working very hard with him to pin his ears back more and use his foot speed." (Jason Jones, Head Coach Melbourne Uni)
Box Hill players to watch:
"Ben Williams is playing his second year of 1st grade in 2014 and he has learnt a lot from his experiences so far at this level. He played a great game against Moorabbin and will be looking for a repeat performance this week against Melbourne Uni. He certainly has the physical size and will be looking to make the most of his opportunities in the contact zone this week.
"Alex Masters played in the first round when we had a loss against Melbourne Uni. He then hurt his shoulder but has since recovered, playing 2nds while we had Ben Meehan dropping down from the Rebels to play scrumhalf. Last week he came off the bench to good effect in the win against Melbourne, and he will be doing everything he can to make sure we win again this week against Melbourne Uni." (Andrew Slyfield, Box Hill Head Coach)

Top 4 all still have the bye to come so that could come into play big time. If Uni can win with a BP at least 3 of those games then they could be in with a shot. I don't think PH are going to make it though. Box Hill have the toughest draw, they have to play the other 3 in the next 5 weeks.

Just out of curiosity, what happens at the end of the soup season? Are ALL the Rebels players available for their clubs? Or is there limited availability?

Mostly asking because I want Meehan playing all the time for mighty Box Hill.

They will play in the NRC and I think they can play finals if they have qualified. Not sure how many games they need to play to play finals though.

He definitely brings a spark and speed to their game which seems missing when he isn't playing.

i think each of the NRC teams is limited to 16 contracted super players, the rest will be "locals" or at least non super contracted players

I think that the squads are 33 players, with maximum Super Players being 16, and 17+ local players.

Given we have a direct link between the Rebels and the Rising, I don't see any way we won't get our full allocation.

So if there is 16 rebels playing for the rising, does that mean only 7 local players will make it in the game day squad, and the other 10 or so local players hope they get a shot. Just confused how it's promoting local players, when there's still 15 or 16 rebels players who aren't local still getting that 1st choice opportunities.

Because that's how the dice rolls.

23 blokes just from the VRU would get Steamrolled. Its nobody's fault, it's just the truth. The development would be more likely hindered than helped.

So a number of Soup players are essential. All Rebels, for the purposes of keeping costs down. The ARU, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that the upper limit is 16.

Ultimately, 10-12 blokes will be getting the opportunity to play at a level they wouldn't have been able to at home prior to the competition. While it'll be mostly Rebels in the starting 15, injury, rotation, and pure positional requirements mean a number of players will get a go that wouldn't have before.

For example, had Moli not been injured, a reserve front row could look like this:

16. Moli Sooaemalelagi
17. Fereti Sa'aga
18. Dale Stevenson

Which would get about 6 games at a higher level into them, developing them further for the Shield next year, and potential Rebels or other Soup Rep in later years.

Honestly, the same questions could be asked of the Perth Side, the Canberra side, and the NSW country side. If 16 players are just going to come from the Soup sides, how will it help develop the rugby in those locations?
