Opening of the State Rugby Centre

Victorian Rugby Union is officially opening the new State Rugby Centre located at AAMI Park, on Thursday 8 December 2011.

The new State Rugby Centre is a wonderful state-of-the-art facility and will be made available for use by all affiliated clubs, including the VRRA, VSRU and its affiliated schools and the RaboDirect Rebels.

The state centre will display the history of Rugby Union in Victoria in the form of Honour Boards memorabilia, photos and trophies and the VRU expect it will to continue to build Rugby Union in the state.

Victorian Rugby Union CEO, Ross Oakley, said such a centre would have tremendous future potential for the sport in the state, while also offering a home for its history.

“Victoria has been crying out for something like this and where better to house it than at AAMI Park, the home of Victoria’s very own RaboDirect Rebels.”

Originally the VRU were suppose to be based at AAMI, however they are co located with the Rebels.

Great use of resources I say.

I hope they can get some of those French scrum machines or something similar. I still cant believe that after all the scrummaging problems Australia has had, that no one is making this a priority for our improvement...

Did I put the quoted text in some strange obscure colour that only I can read?

Obviously it's got memorabilia and the like but when it says things like "for use by affiliate clubs" I think you can understand the confusion.

I mean the term State Rugby Centre is pretty vague.

The WA one is just a big gym from what I gather.

Rebels admin facilities at Visy Park looks like a dump though. Would have preferred if this space was used for Rebels Admin. When are the VRU ever going to play at AAMI?

Function > Form.

They already have, you mean for competition points though?

Could they actually play rugby games out of Visy Park? I presume it has a field set-up and some stands or something.

I could think of some interesting uses a medium sized stadium could have for Vic rugby.

Negative.

Used by Carlton FC & AFL Umpires, there are lines going everywhere.

Shame. It'd be nice if there was somewhere other than Box Hill where we could have finals.

Who's your club en force er?

i agree with this, a 'home' of local rugby like Ballymore would be great for vic but AAMI Park is too big. Bob Jane Stadium in south melbourne would be perfect with it's small capacity and more central location(save for a shite running track) if South Melbourne FC and Vic Aths could be convinced to let the vru use the pitch for the big games (unlikely). I do hope of one day seeing the adjacent pitch to AAMI being built up with a small (Cheap) suburban style stand running along the sides for VRU, VRL and VPL finals. the pro teams can keep using it for training so AAMI'S pitch is nice and perfect.

I don't really have a club and I have nothing against Box Hill but they have nowhere near the best club field/infrastructure in Vic rugby and it's silly that they get all the grand finals purely by virtue of having a fenced off field.

The field just outside of AAMI or a Vic premier league soccer ground or perhaps even a premier cricket club ground would all be great options IF they could be organised. As long as the ground is good quality, in a central location and has some kind of stand it would be a great option.

Speaking of which Powerhouse's field at Albert Park is having a stand build next to it isn't it? With some temporary fencing that would be a great option.

I agree, it's way too east of the city.

Don't know all that much about powerhouse, I'll take a look next weekend.

Could speak to Cricket Victoria and use their soon to be redeveloped Junction Oval/State Cricket Academy.
