Halley Appleby has just passed away at the Royal Brisbane Hospital after a tragic accident in yesterday first-grade match between UQ and GPS.

Halley was revived several times yesterday before he was taken to the RBH and placed in intensive care.

He passed away only a few hours ago.

On behalf of the G&GR community, I wish his friends and family the best of luck during what is undoubtedly a very emotional, shocking and traumatic time for them.

Does anyone know anything about the incident specifically?

As a volunteer at my club with strapping/medico duties, something like this is my greatest fear.

Feelings go out to the family, friends and club. Puts things back in perspective.

I'd love to know more as well. For some reason all I can picture is scenes from when Julian Huxley was knocked out by Horwill and it turned out he had a massive un-noticed pre-condition!

From the second hand stories I've heard, I hope his Girlfriend was able to make it back from Europe to say goodbye!

from a quick search on Google, it looks like he had a heart attack after being tackled. This is all I have found out, but there has to be more to it than that, right?

Reports in the media aren't completely accurate however details won't be posted in a public forum. Swarley's description is pretty bloody good.

Please spare a thought for the GPS boys at this time too. Those boys are also going through hell

Thanks for that Cat_A.

My thoughts are with his family, friends, club and as you pointed out GPS.

His family would like it known that he donated his organs and helped 5 people live better lives.

That's just the sort of bloke he is.
Here here. A very rare incident, its really in the back of your mind when you run out there. It's all about having fun.

Hope the people involved in get counciling also. Bet it will weigh heavily on the minds of those involved in the tackle.

That's a wonderful contribution from a dark incident - thank you for sharing.

It was good to hear that people across the ground immediately sprung into action to assist - it's one of the reasons I'm very glad to be associated with our code.

Thoughts are again with the family, friends and club.

Poor bastard, he only was playing the game we all love. This just makes you feel sick and empty in the stomach. Deepest condolances to friends and family.

I went to school with the Appleby boys and knew Halley and his brother well, it's such horrific news that something like this could happen to such a loving and supporting family. He will be missed greatly by all friends and family. Our thoughts are with you all.

The funeral details have been announced.

Halley Appleby funeral details: 11am Friday @ Gregson & Weight Funeral Directors & Mortuary Service. 34 National Park Rd, Nambour.

The Family welcome all, provisions have been made to deal with large numbers. If you can get there, I know the Family and both clubs would appreciate the support.
