My bad mate started using an iPad and my grammar is out the window. Yeh apparently reds weren't going to take butler on a full contract they were hoping they could entice there first choice back to qld. But all they were offering was a rookie contract which didn't cut it for our young friend interstate hence butler was next in line.

DO you know who it was? because I do not see the point in talking in whispers and grapevines.

Yeah Cottrell does make sense.

Well done, i'd say that's it.

On another note, how well has he done?

He was not even looked at for our academy, and is now probably front runner for the 6 jersey at the force next year ahead of Mccafrey who is highly touted by those in the know.

It really highlights the issues with the current process of talent ID.

Damn he would of been really really handy for the Reds next year. Not taking anything away from Jarrad, but Cottrell would of definatly taken the pressure of Quirk and the aging Samo. Oh well.

I was really impressed with both Cottrell and McCafrey in the one game I sore them play for the Force.

Why is it The Force can pick a good backrower from the litter, but no-one else in other positions?

We haven't seen the best of Quirk for the Reds yet. But am I the only one here who thinks Shatz is overrated? I go as far as saying useless just to try and balance the opinions. He has been talked about as a wallaby backrower..... Ignoring Mowen.

This is the first discussion I have read so I am not sure if his name has come up before but what about the young backrower from Warringah, Sam Ward? he is a big lad and he is a quality player? does anyone know much about him? I think he was injured a couple of months ago though, would he have a shot?

Wasnt Hingano with the Rebels? Why did they let him go?

Is Jacob Woodhouse the bloke who went to Ireland for a stint?

Tell me more about Waldo. He looked fantastic in against the baby blacks a few years ago.

Hingano is only 19 that's why I mentioned him as one for the future. He wouldn't have much past 18 when the Rebels had a look at him.

Woodhouse - what qwerty said - In 2009 I wrote that I thought that schoolboys PAE, L.Jones, Gill, Sitauti, Peterson, Stirzacker and Woodhouse would be Super material, and Browning and Sautia, as he was called then, were 15 year old marvels that could be anything, but they were too young to make a call on.

It wasn't the greatest Oz School team I have seen but they had more promising individuals in it than any I can remember. Browning was still at school last year but all the others except Woodhouse have made their mark either with a Super or EPS contract. 20 y.o. Woodhouse was in the Tahs "amateur" academy (as I used to call it) when he left school and currently he is playing fullback for Manly (as D'Arcy did a couple of years ago). Going OK too and I hope that he makes it as Browning surely will.

Wessels - that was last year that he played for Oz Schools; he turned 18 last April; so he is another for the future. As was mentioned: he was injured early in the season and as far as I know he won't play again this year. He seems to be walking OK when I have seen him - and he was running water OK, as I remember now, for CHS Schools this year.

The few games I've seen whilst visiting Canberra the Vikings winger darragh fanning(not sure of spelling) has been very good, would be a handy pick up for any franchise, although I do believe he his Irish which may be the reason he hasn't been picked up

We could turn this into a guessing game:

Former QLD backrowers:

Ptasi Luafutu
Ben Mowen
Richard Brown
David Pocock

So, I'm thinking ex- Easts boy Ben Mowen, although you could hardly offer him a rookie contract, so maybe not, and he is the Brumbies skipper. Pity, he'd be a great addition.

T12 you don't need me to tell you anything.

But schatz isn't anything special either I think him and quirk are both much of muchness they do the shitters and get by but nothing they do is outstanding. Reds can't keep beau, quirk and schatz it's 3 of a kind

Consider one is a 6, another a 7 and last an 8. I think it makes perfect sense that we keep all three.

Neither quirk or schatz have shown anything to be considered specialists in there positions and I think is one of those guys who plays 7 cause he isn't tall enough for 6 and 8. He works hard but doesn't set the world on fire. He will only play 6 now for the reds unless gill is unavailable. In eyes they should cut quirk or beau and get a specialist 6 or 8 in. No point having two players who stand out in none and are average across three.

I disagree, they all bring something different, Ed and Jake are young and I think by the second half of 2013 we'll have a real idea of how good they will be.

Beau brings something much more than his physical presence, he is the sort of bloke that takes off over the wall into machine gun fire and inspires everyone to follow him, his foot was crocked this year, hopefully he plays 6 next year in tandem with Gill and Ed comes off the bench. Schatz will become a good 8.

Have to disagree with your opinion on Shatzie TD. I think he has really shown he is the real deal, whether that be at 6 or 8. He finished in the top 5 for the Pilecki Medal on Friday, not bad when you look at the players he's polled ahead of.

He's a future Wallaby, and he hasn't even peaked yet.

This kind of stuff annoys me.

Shatz is 22 years old. Has played 32 matches for the Reds, is 192 cms and about 109kgs.
Compare this to Cottrell or Mccafrey who have about 5 matches between them and are his contemporaries.

Quirk is even younger. But at 21 he 12 caps to his name, toured with the U20s twice and is a Bronze boot medalist to boot.

The fact that they are even playing Super rugby consistently in a very competitive backrow is testament to the fact of how well they are going. Both of these players have the game at their feet, where does your criticism stem from? What do you expect from them? or better yet what would you like to have seen from them so far that they havent been able to deliver?
