Good point by Scotty there - at one point in the 80s Sydney Uni was threatened with demotion and they got their shit together and sit on top of the pile.
Actually, NTA, it was much later when Uni were threatened with exclusion. Your confusion over the decade may have been because of prior events.
In 1978 and 1979 and again in 1983 Sydney Uni were relegated to Second Division, but fought their way back.
Given the Club's current dominance it is interesting to note an excerpt from the 1979 Annual Report:
"In 1979 ... the University's record in the colts competition was poor. This was exacerbated by the number of times the club forfeited in the colts section ... The Club's failure to find a colts side may well have been the cause of the club remaining in second division and not being promoted irrespective of the excellence of the performance of the first grade ... An undertaking has been given to the Sydney Rugby Union that this club will be properly represented in the 1980 first division competition ... and that includes two colts sides ... The club should realise that ... it has a number of critics who will use any excuse ... to relegate the club once again to second division ..."
It was in February 1997 that the NSWRU put the 14 Premier clubs on notice that it would be reducing the competition by two clubs by the end of the year, execution being based on set criteria. On March 20 Greg Growden's 'Ruck And Maul' column in the
Sydney Morning Herald had a paragraph headed " Uni for the boot' which stated that 'Sydney University and Southern Districts are the early tips to be the two clubs ousted from the Sydney premiership next season.' Similarly, the May 1997 edition of
Rugby Review stated: 'So far the rumour mill has been working overtime, and the most tipped to get the chop are Sydney University and Southern Districts.'
In the event the Sydney rugby community missed its chance to rid itself of the pestilence.
