Australia were competitive for most of the game but didn't manage being a man down anywhere near as well as NZ, couldn't make up the deficit after that. Generally looking a bit underdone, which is to be expected and the point of this tournament. Would be great to see them get just 1 or 2 more teams (maybe Samoa or Japan?) involved here for that extra bit of game time before the world champs.
Very impressed by Isaac Lucas. Great footwork, good read of the game and a radar off the tee. Might not have been the best player out there but brave and determined as all hell. Looks to have an attitude that will take him along way. Not too surprising given the family. McDermott brought plenty of the bench, showing the value of time in a professional setup.
Australian scrum is an absolute weapon and something they can really build their game around going forward. For all the very legitimate complaints about Australian skill development in recent times our props and scrumaging have improved out of sight at all levels over the last 5 years. Hard to believe it's a fluke, have to look at how it has been done and start bringing that improvement to the rest of our game.

Set piece was amazing. Both scrum and line-out. The combination of Hockings, Hosea and Blyth was very good. Front row monstered NZ.
Back play was pretty good. Shame to lose Ikitau early. McTaggart a standout.
As RichE said, they started well and finished well.
Just a few bad kicks. Giving NZ any ball in broken play is always dangerous.

This is the result that was expected when you pick a QLD state team to play as our National team. If you are going to select and coach at a National level you have to be professional about researching who the good players are out of you're own home state. Its not good enough to just pick the players that you have coached in an U20s Qld side and ignore the talent from other states.
The final piece of evidence if their wasn't already enough was the fact that Harrison Goddard from NSW, a Super Rugby player,who single handedly scored 17 points in the final game against Italy last year in the Aus U20s team was monumentally shafted this year by Adrian Thompson and left out of this side. As were many other NSW boys.
If we want a shot at winning the World championships the Qld selector needs to pick a National side not a State side

I am unable to understand how a 20 point loss is good or acceptable or promising.
Nor do I get why if the role of this comp is to better prepare for the junior wc it wouldn’t do precisely the same for NZ and widen the gap.
If you have a dominant scrum but can’t capitalise on that it suggests to me the cattle aren’t as good as You think they are.

You really need to get your facts right. Goddard has been told he won’t be released as Genia is injured. He’s the 3rd halfback for the Rebels and IMP he should be above Ruru. He most probably will not go to the World Cup as Genia is out for up to 6 weeks after Friday nights game. That could be the same with any of these contract players. Look at JP and HS from the reds. Rob V could be the same from the brumbies. Super Rugby has priority. Sad but true.

Losing margin went from 37 to 15.
Let's agree that is a significant improvement at this level.
We weren't beaten at the set piece, we were beaten in open play and broken play.
Were we beaten by a more mobile pack? Just seems NZ always had numbers to stretch the defence, and their back row are ball runners running into space. When NZ had the ball, speed at the breakdown and putting it through the hands was the difference.
Australia has to be better with the kicking game. Kicks have to go out or be contestable and put pressure on the other side.

Friday 4pm under 20s Aus v NZ team announced with no Goddard
Friday 7 pm Genia injures himself so Goddard would have been pulled but was not named so didnt have to be.
Both Tate and Loneragan have been named captains in these Oceania games so do you really think Adrian Thompson was looking to include the best U20s half back in Australia in his “Qld ”team?

Mate seriously, do you really think they are going to release him. WG has just come back from a hamstring injury. He would of had to stay there as cover. There not going to risk there next 9 in line for an Oceania tournament. The reds didn’t release Hamish Stewart, Jordan P. Valetini played for his club, why wasn’t he released. Facts over emotions. I to want to see HG there but it ain’t going to happen.
