The Brumbies have had gone down in their last trial before the Super Rugby season starts with a 38-26 loss to the
Chiefs on the Sunshine Coast.

The Brumbies ran out what would be close to their opening match fifteen but it was the Chiefs who looked hot
in the first half under their new coach Colin Cooper before the Brumbies gained some respectability in the second half to make a game of it in a game that could be best described as a game of two halves.

A tough opening ten minutes for both sides with a few handling errors halting any momentum after an initial
backline move from the Brumbies with their first chance with the ball.

A fortuitous bounce from a Lealiifano kick saw Henry Speight pick the ball up and it might have been easier to score
as he attempted to find support. The resulting five metre scrum saw the Brumbies lose possession but made up for it
immediately as Joe Powell swooped on a loose Chiefs ball at the back of the scrum to score the opening try.

The Chiefs came back into the game with some nice attacking play of their own with winger Solomon Alaimalo getting
involved with pace down the left wing. They went close to again but it was thirst time lucky as
Alaimalo broke a tackle to send Brad Weber to the line.

That same combo of Alaimalo and Weber combined again just before the 20 minute mark with another raid down the
left wing and Weber backed up nicely to score his second of the night to make it 14-7.

The Brumbies missed tackles in open field was hurting them badly as the Chiefs counter attack made easy metres and again their support play was brilliant as fullback Shaun Stevenson got involved and Mitchell Brown had the Chiefs third try before the 20 minute mark.

Brad Weber was having a score fest on Valentine's Day and bagged his hat trick before 25 minutes on the clock.
A scrum five metres out was picked up by Taleni Seu and had a simple offload to Weber and he strolled over to make it 26-7.

Both sides made a heap of changes for the second half as you'd expect in a trial but it was more of the same for the Chiefs
as they made the small metres close to the line and Liam Messam got over the line as the Brumbies defence finally cracked.

The Brumbies backline speed looked better with Matt Lucas on the field and the quick ball for the backs allowed Andy
Muirhead to get one back to make it 33-14.

Isi Naisirani continued his good game and picked up a loose Chiefs ball to run 70 metres untouched to the line to reduce
the margin

There was still life in the Brumbies as time wond down and Kyle Godwin evaded the chasing Charlie Ngatai after weaving
his way through the defence before the Chiefs put the game to bed with a try to Johnny Fa’auli in the corner after collecting a pin point cross field kick from Marty McKenzie

There were some positives despite the loss for the Brumbies with Isi Naisirani and Kyle Godwin looking good in parts and Matt Lucas added some spark to the backline when he came on to give Dan McKellar something to think about before they head to Japan to take on the Sunwolves in their first game of the season next weekend.

Chiefs 38 - Weber 3, Brown, Messam, Fa’auli tries, D McKenzie 3, M McKenzie cons
Brumbies 26 - Powell, Muirhead, Naisirani, Godwin tries, Lealiifano, Hawera 2 cons

Interesting trial. Conditions were positively soapy but handling was generally quite good considering. The Brumbies had trouble getting over the ad line but when they did they really opened up the Chiefs off the back of quick ball. Lucas was very impressive in that regard, he's perfect for the Brumbies' game style.

Naisarani limping in the background of the post-game interviews. Hopefully just a stinger.

Hawera seemed to make a difference to the attack in the second half. Worked well with Lucas and Godwin.

I'm surprised they've had Naisarani play the full game in both trials......... he's clearly the standout backrower in the team.

It's good to see Godwin having a couple of strong games...... hopefully will continue on into the regular season.

Again, Taliauli looked good in the second half (wearing no. 9 and consistently referred to as 'Peni' by the commentators)........ Muirhead too.

Lilo had some great touches early on - that first set piece move off the scrum, followed by the short kick leading to the Speight 'nearly try.'

I didn't see much from Lucas to suggest he's pushing for a starting spot....... made a load of mistakes, and his passing from the ruck wasn't as quick.

It's hard to take much from these trials though......... the senior contingent were rusty as hell and some of the traditionally strong aspects from the Brumbies were quite poor- set piece, defence.......... whereas some of the Vikings players that came on later in the game looked much sharper.

Some good truth here, but you've got to be kidding about Lucas, he sparked a lot of the action. I'm not saying he'll grab the starting team but he had a better game than Powell

Nah, I didn't think either of them were particularly great.........

I was expecting more from Lucas after reading the reports prior to watching the replay, but I didn't see him 'spark anything', in fact he made a lot of errors and his passing from the back of the ruck wasn't as sharp as Powell's. He did benefit from more quick ball though - the Brumbies' breakdown was a mess for much of the first half.

Godwin is having some good games and showing some reasonable form. But he still needs to have time get set and know the script. If you watch when he has to ad-lib he gets lost and attack does not come to him naturally. His mistakes came as soon as it was broken play. His kicking to the side line was poor; very little distance. The form he is showing is getting close to what Dargaville showed @12 during the NRC.

Lucas will push Powell simply on speed and service. Powell seem to have fallen in to the Larkham slow game control mantra that puts no pressure on the opposition and as is very predictable at times. He's young so that will change. He can play at pace and need to do so more often.

IMHO what we saw last might was the old school team and (default) ways in the first half that made the Brumbies appear to be in slow motion compared to the Chiefs. Same old kicking errors, predictable exits, issue with defence out wide (repeatedly) and little pressure on the Chiefs.

The "second team" (second half) was interesting to watch as it mixed new blood with some evolving players raw talent. Hawera was interesting to watch as he actually challenged the line really well and sparked the attack which allowed us to see some natural skills and talent of the players being used. This group have had time in camp where the mould has been broken and Hewitt has time to "show them the light" de-Larkham them.

Muirhead and Taliauli looked really good.

13 continues to be an issue in the back-line. TK seemed to go missing in the first half. IMHO this is a result of Godwin playing more like a 13 needing to run on to the ball and be more of a "link" player as he is not a creator. So it and either and or situation with them as a pairing. Same occurred with Dargaville when he came on later at 13 (with Godwin on). Although with Dargaville he is more dynamic across the ground than TK so keeps up with the broken play.

Key issue that looms for the Brumbies and its coaching staff; selections. Will they pick on form and combinations or get sucked in to black-hole of the emotional, reputation based trap and we end up with a team playing like the first half.

Sometimes accepting change is harder to deal with than actually changing.

Good to hear positive commentary around Goodwin, very maligned player whose defensive capability is very key to the Brumbies. He ain't the player who will necessarily hold court during broken play opportunities, but there are others for that role.
