Trial: Brumbies v Highlanders - Wagga - 31/1/15

Brumbies starting XV was: Sio, Wade, Alexander, Arnold, Carter, Fardy, Pocock, Butler, White, To'omua, Tomane, Lealiifano, Kurirani, Speight, Coleman.

Brumbies first half was good with their scrum looking dominant at times and Kuridrani's 2nd try came from a scrum penalty.

There were plenty of handling errors from both sides which didn't help the flow of the game.

Kuridrani was outstanding and Speight a close second.

The second half donut is a concern and will need to be addressed before the season commences and gave up 24 unanswered points after 19 of their own in the first half. The Clan had a player red carded but they still had 15 players on so not sure what happened there.

For the Wallabies contingent - Carter went off injured in the first quarter, Pocock looking back to his best, Fardy trying to monster everyone, Nic White up to his usual tricks annoying the opposition - 1 of his kicks went dead in goal from his own 22 as did one of To'omua's. Lealiifano missed a tough conversion but set up Kuridrani's 2nd try.

Thanks BJ. How did the Brumbies' locks fare? Who played after Sam left the field?

Some of the best seasons have followed losses in all the trial matches, so here's hoping for the best this year.

Blake Enever came on for Carter.
They looked ok at times and the scrum got at least two dominant shoves up the field so not d overall. The line out was a bit shaky though but that happens when you're down to the 5th string hooker and a fill in at that

Yeah - shades of Lala Lam throwing in for the Vikings. Certainly puts the set piece under quite a bit of pressure. Did Arnold play the whole game, or did Tom Staniforth get a run?

One irritation which I wish could be addressed was the time taken for scrum resets. In the final 5 minutes of the game there where two scrums which were re set several times and consumed the majority of the remaining time when the Brumbies and crowd where desperate for the ball to be in play.
Along with signalling the half to feed would it be possible for time to restart on the same signal so that if the referee decides to re set than at least the time is not taken from the game clock.

I thought the Brumby inside backs White,To'omua and Lealiifano were very good in the opening forty minutes when the majority of the play was in the Brumby half. Christian especially played very well and was instrumental in Tevita having such a strong game. Each time the Brumbies penetrated the Highlanders half they seemed to score in the opening half.
David Pocock played very strongly at the breakdown but also gave the pass for Tevita's first try after a good cut out pass from White

The Reds v Rebels game was exactly the same. I really hope things are better in the proper season. I sometimes wonder if the referee couldn't make the decision when the scrums are fucking up and just award the team with the put in a free kick (which cannot be used as a scrum).

This was a great game and top effort from the Brumbies and Highlanders to come over to Wagga. We look forward to having them back again in 2016! Great wraps from around town about both teams, both more than welcome in sunny Wagga...
