TRC Round 1: South Africa v Australia, Sunday 21 July 1:05am AEST

It's illustrative to me that Kerevi is universally praised yet seemingly can't draw a man and pass when in a bigger space than London Hyde Park and with an option each side.

There has been some talk of TK and Hodge being quite (although I was surprised Hodge was on the field when I saw him in the second half). Kerevi really didn't get it out to the wing/13. Maybe that's just time, and TK needs to run off Kerevi's shoulder more so we get the double K hitting the gaps.

Simmons clean out on Peter Steph du-Toit at the breakdown before Foley's try was really really good. Created the quick ball for Genia to feed Beale running a great line. To'omua carried pretty well and looked good coming off the bench.
That was a great try the run from To'omua who broke a few tackles and got the ball back, the clean out (I didn't see it) then Genia to pick up Beale on the fly, and for Foley, being Foley and following the ball. But its what happens when they went straight and hard.

it was late after the whistle. yellow for the sheer stupidity in my book.
Specially since Arnold had locked up the ball and it was our penalty the play was over, and Thor just wanted to thump the guy, clean out good, but late on the play and stupid stupid stupid. He had no reason to do it, and he turned a great maul defense into an absolute shit storm

Will have to have another look but he appeared to be the main miss tackle for the last try, where he slipped off, and also took the wrong player which created the overlap for the nice backline hands move that resulted in another bokke try. Bit of work still needed in defense

We get our hands on the ball and there’s some nice interplay between Foley and Beale.

“But Foley has done nothing.”

Pretty hard to with no ball, chumps.

UTG< I'd agree but we had more ball in the first half than the Saffas, I believe, and he did next to nothing other than get his runners smashed.

Can't see Lilo doing much better when instructed to make those stupid wrap around plays against a hard press.

Foley was fine. Not great, but no where near our worst. I still want to see Lilo given a game - but don't expect him to be exceptionally better.

They did score and well done to them but I think their YC was a little bit easier to manage than ours which left us a man down in a tired pack at altitude late in the game.

Would you think that the YC could have been better managed had a winger been taken off? It was certainly a mistake to take Naisarani off, imo.

Going back to the decision not to take penalty goals on offer.
Dane H-P's try came from such a decision, so the next time a similar decision had to be made there was a successful precedent to take into account.

If we’re done taking parochial potshots at individual players.............

The main issue seems to be the defensive structures, again, as Reg pointed out...........

Players seem to be confused as to where they should be at times.............

The constant throwing away of the ball - stupid offloads to players in a worse position than the ball carrier, or miracle passes to players in no position to catch them.

The TH side of the scrum got cleaned up - AAA should help that out when he’s back.

Tupou to play club rugby for the next month.

Largely I’d keep the starting team unchanged but bring in AAA and Korobeite..........

Maybe Sio too to keep the LH’s rotated.

Lazy box kicks, nothing bombs, powder puff pack, smashed in the scrums, weak defence, lazy breakaways, inept outside backs. This game had it all, a wonderful effort by Australia.

Honestly the work at the breakdown was appalling. No-one over the ball, no contest for possession. Why do I constantly see Hooper on the wing? LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) anonymous, watch how he pulls up chasing on the try. He's not even the best 6 in QLD, not good enough at this level.

Foley still a liability in D easy metres to oppo, created nothing, nothing kicks at Ellis park should be booting them 60 yards.

Was Kuridrani on the park? First touch by Beale, turnover to Boks, 3 phase later try time. Last touch by Beale, turnover & try to Boks.

The less said about the chuckle brothers on the wings the better.

Mark for selection panel week 1 - 0/10.

I absolutely agree on Hooper. He is not, or does not play as, a No 7. The absence of a pilferer putting pressure on opposition ball was instrumental in the Saffas having so much possession in the second half. That is the No 7's primary task in my view. Hooper failed, no argument.

Look I am sure it's been said on here already but the pacivity of our defensive line was glaring. Add to that two blindside tries where the defense was completely missing would indicate that the players are responding the Grey and that he remains bloody lucky to be there
So true Reg. Two tries can win you test matches. Add in the 2 chances and the attack could be ok.

Shipping 5 tries won't win you anything

Good to hear about To'omua breaking tackles in lead up to Beale's try. I just not seen enough of To'omua to understand probably whether he warrants a place and how much To'omua post his Northern Hemisphere experience is a better player or not.

I thought Foley was ok and not the problem and not convinced Lilo better option. Foley to me is still our best option and just have to work with that. Unearthing White who was unknown to me was a bonus.

Kerevi was good in breaking tackles and fining space but comments about his passing game probably fair in reflection.

I am probably accepting that at this point for the cattle we have - I am just not sure we can change too much to get much improvement. Ok put in a specialist winger but none of our specialist wingers are world class...hence I guess why we trot out the Hodge and DHP on our wings. I also think whilst Banks deserves his place and starting again at 15 with Beale just coming on from bench earlier, I don't think he will ever be world class and again just reflects our lack of genuine super stars and options.

We just don't have the cattle to be anything more than a middling top ten side that has the occasional upset against the top of the table sides.

I couldn't be fucked replying to all of BR's complaints but I do agree with most of this. The only thing I don't agree with is the Tupou bit, I do just think your opinions are a bit heavy handed when it comes to disciplinary actions. We're about the worst in the top nations at getting away with shit, one of our biggest problems is we we get pinged for everything. Sending Tupou, who's our future, back to clubland won't fix anything, coaching him better will.

Agree on the selections, both Sio and AAA to come back in and start, DHP needs to go for Koroibete, and I think it's worth trying Banks at 14 and Beale at 15 and Hodge takes the 23 spot.

Yeah I just thought that it was smart to get Steph du Toit off his feet straight away and allow Genia to come through and clear it as soon as he possibly could. Simmons does that sort of legal cheating at the breakdown often where he goes through the gate and then turns around and grabs an opposition player's jersey and pulls them back towards their own goal line or he just gets them off their feet like he did to Steph du Toit.

Since his Paul Roos days Herschel Jantjies has been a special player. To have a debut like yesterday is special.

Rassie's masterplan started like a bom.

Frans Steyn has always been our missing link in 12.

Will be interesting to see which players will start against the All Blacks

There’s nothing wrong with the cattle. Not sure about the jackaroos.

Yep, plenty were predicting Rassie had stuffed up. Good depth in the Boks. Looking like good prep for RWC.

He put the kick through for Hodge, who toed it down to the SA line and we almost scored; he made the break then put the kick through for DHP who bollocksed it up over the line. He kicked the goals. He did what he did. He didn't get yellow carded and do other random assorted idiotic crap. Others had that covered.

Already posted that I ate my words after his try bud

This is not and should never be a card. Paul Williams has a bad habit of shitting the bed every time he sees a big collision and just comes up with bullshit to justify a card. He’s the guy that gave Thor a yellow for a tackle he called “very close to being high (whatever, that means).”

It was after the whistle, away from the ball on the side of the ruck with a player kneeling with hands away responding the whistle having gone. IF TT did not hear the whistle its tough on him but still the correct decision. He is lucky his targeting was spot on because any contact to the head even on reflection upwards would have made it Red. This was just dumb like Kepu's effort last year, in fact it is almost identical and could indicate a coaching problem.
It was always a yellow card and was correctly given
