The "Blues from Auckland" have 15 players with x-factor and they're sitting mid-table. The beauty of rugby is that it's a genuine team game, and an unextraordinary player like Carter, in his own way, can do more to help his side win than a selfish superstar. I love it.

Well plenty would argue about the x-factor of all the Blues, but that's another thread. Maybe in the past, but not so much now.
I'm not really talking about the relative value to the team of Carter and Tahu, it was more musing whether Tahu may have been better off outside Hangers. Calling Tahu a selfish superstar seems a bit extreme I would think too...

He seems perfect for NSWs top of the table game plan. I'm surprised that anyone's surprised. Nathan Grey anyone?

Nathan Grey was 3 Tom Carters. He had a good boat, a better offload and could distribute. In fact, he started at 10 once for the Wallabies and shuffled in there once (at Melbourne and Twickers respectively I think). He is no Timmy Horan, but he is a far superior product to Carter.

Having said that, I dont blame Hickey for picking Carter. The reality is that Tahu hasnt stepped up. Who do you reckon that the selectors were pencilling in at 12 and 13 during the off season? You can bet it would have been a combination of Tahu and Horne. Carter is doing a job and Tahu isnt. Carter isnt doing the job they anticipated the 12 would be doing but he is doing enough.

I smell the sentiment of reminiscence. Grey was a turnstyle in defence and unidimensional in attack.

In his later Waratahs years he wasn't as effective, falling off the odd head-on tackle, but that was a beaut :)

I agree - Grey was just like Carter, but worth about 1.4 Carters. Better all around, very valuable player at S12 level.

I didn't mean to suggest that Tahu was a selfish superstar, just that sometimes you can play a position like Mr Invisible Rueben Thorne and be really effective.

Not if I recall correctly. One of the few highlights (the only?) of Mad Matt's time in charge in the late 90s was the solid midfield defence of Grey and Jason Jones-Hughes followed by Grey and Luke Inman. Nathan was a ferocious tackler.

As with the shot on BOD, which was a pure and simple blindsiding, if Greysey got you, it stuck, problem was that, unless he could line 'em up from a long way off, it just didn't happen. Don't get me wrong tho, I think Grey was a gutsy guy.

Speaking of Tah's centre combo's, I think Grey was partnered with Turinui for a time. Now there's a set of turnstiles to rival Circular Quay ferry wharf.

Sorry Mr Ngo, you are wrong. Grey was a solid defender and was not all big hits. You are selling him short, IMHO. Won't speak for the Pieman though.

That's Dr Ngo, and we'll just have to differ on that one.

Well, better than addressing you as Phuc! Does the metal hand make it harder to type?

Aaah, very good, Dr Ngo, but that's actually Dr Cyclepath!! Sorry, as Lindommer loves to say I am a pedant (or is that pedallist??).

Oh, and let's not forget - Barnes at 12 has no running game. None whatsoever ! What's the point of a centre who can't make a line break ? Carter at least can cart it up and offload.

Not even 30 seconds into the Highlanders match & Barnes has just shot Naz down with a line break & offload.

Yeah but Barnes doesn't do the 1 percenters, you know - mouth off, give guys a shove here and there, stand around with a tough guy grimace on his face. All the really important things! ;)

I think I saw Barnes shoulder charge the opposition after the whitsle though, oh hang on that might have been Carter.
