The Wallabies Thread

convince Palmer to go off to the Wallabies it might open up an opportunity at the Brumbies for him....

I have to say, I am somewhat surprised at the push for Dan to be thrust into the Wallabies as their scrum coach. Taking away that Dan is undoubtedly a great and intelligent bloke both on and off the field. Does it not seem a bit preemptive to thrust him into such a senior position?

I'm sure Dan knows what he's doing, but appointing him so early in his career is similar to Thorn getting the nod at the Reds. Both blokes are seen to have great potential, but many (myself included) would like them to gain a bit more experience. Unlike Thorn, Dan's career was cut significantly short. As we know, Props require significant experienece in their dark arts, so it is somewhat concerning that a guy who's most likely less experienced in this field compared to Slipper is going to oversee it.

I'd much prefer Stiles to get the nod for this appointment with Dan being a part of that team to gain even more experience.

Palmer is probably the guy who was always considered the foremost expert at scrummaging as a player though.

This is just for the EOYT (and even then, not all of it).

I think that is a reasonable time frame to trial him and see if it makes sense to make it permanent moving forward.

It needs to be a back up 10/12/15 really or one of those. Hunt is perfect as he can play all 3. We don't necessarily need a back up 10 as we need two props or a hooker on the bench.

Anyone else feel like the Scotland game on the end of a non-stop 6 week tour is a massive banana peel?

Has Aus ever lost to Scotland twice in the same year?

These assistant coach positions shouldn’t be part-time roles, it just doesn’t work. A Wallaby scrum coach, he should also be coordinating with all the other Super Rugby teams, attending the sessions of all clubs and getting hands on with the players during the Super Rugby season, just as Ledesma had started doing this year. Dan Palmer won’t be able to fill both the Brumbies and Wallabies positions.

I agree it should be a full time role and he shouldn't be doing both the Brumbies and Wallabies if he gets the Wallabies gig going forward.

At short notice though, I don't think it is crazy that he can't be there for the entirety of the EOYT. The weeks he isn't there are for study commitments, not Brumbies commitments apparently.

No they haven't. Though they've only played more than one test a year on four occasions.

1982: 1/1
1992: 2/0
1998: 2/0
2004: 4/0

Scotland was also doing very well against Australia before the 80's, apparently.

Fuck the Facebook comments on pretty much any Wallabies posts are toxic. There's a photo of Karmichael Hunt today about him being back in camp and there's a bunch of massively negative comments.

There are some players where it is not surprising that the comments are toxic but it is kind of surprising how people will pretty disgusting comments about just about anyone.

Sure Palmer may have been the next Carl Haymen if his foot didn't give out on him. But, he's played 46 Super Rugby games + 1 international. Even with Coaching at the Brumbies, he's still extremely green for a prop.

When we're looking at scrum performances, Stiles and Foley have the points on the board, both have more experience as players and coaches. I just don't think a coach at the Wallabies should be that inexperienced.

Stiles can help take the Wallabies to the WC and will most likely want to try transitioning back to a HC role. That'll give Palmer 2-3 more years to develop his coaching credentials and finish University.

I just think your setting him up to fail thrusting him into such a high performing role which I don't want to see happen to a promising coach.

I think the difference with this role is it isn't a man management role that comes with more senior positions, particularly head coach.

He's just looking at the scrums and it is only temporary at this point.

I think the few weeks on the EOYT will be a good guide for Cheika and the Wallabies as to whether he is ready for it.

I agree that he is something of a risky option which is why it is good they get a "try before you buy" period now.

We don't even know if Stiles would want the job.

Dan has his chance. The ponies have been very effective and consistent through quite a few sets of props and he was always known as a very very effective technician, good luck to the guy, I hope he does great.

Australians are pretty toxic about just about anything once they are on the internets.

At the moment if the Wobs had poached Mike Cron as scrum coach there would be complaints that he is too old

.

We do

"While my time at the Reds has come to an end, I still feel I have plenty to offer as a coach in Australian rugby," Stiles told RUGBY.com.au

"If the opportunity was to come up, I'd love to be part of what the Wallabies are building.

Try and fail or hesitate and be lost. The latter seems to be the default position in Aussie rugby.

We are always wait and see! Sometimes both players and coaches have a natural talent or ability making the time factor irrelevant.

Prior to leaving the Brumbies he was already in part the technical guru and strategist behind the Brumbies scrum. Not a bad effort considering Lord Laurie was there at that time and trusted him. Over the 3 years at the Brumbies as part time scrum coach you can see that their pack has always been good . Knowing that players like Benny A and even Moore respected him as a coach means something i believe.

I am curious how you would measure him? There has never been a dedicated specialist scrum coach until Ledesma. But look at Ledesma. He was a reject, sacked in France and nobody wanted him in Europe or even Argentina. He ended up as scum coach here after dropping in on his old mate Cheika.

Ever hard of a bloke called Steve Borthwick? About 3 years in to his coaching career he was the man behind one of the most technically proficient and awesome scrum to feature at a RWC . His group of little Japaneses players gave it to the Bokke scrum. You will see his handwork when we paly the Poms later this year.

So Palmer is in relatively similar place as Borthwick was in his 3rd year. If anything, Palmer has more experience coaching against higher level intentional scrums comparatively.

With Folau not going on the EOYT it will be interesting to see what Cheika does with fullback.

The obvious options are Beale and Hunt at 12 and 15 but certainly not clear which way you play them.

I really liked something Chubby said last night during the second half when the Wobbs went for the lineout instead of the certain 3 (to the extent that one can be certain when Popgun Foley is the kicker). He was asked whether he was happy to go for broke, and he said something to the effect that he was happy with whatever they decided.
